Didn’t know where else to ask. Iv been prescribed this this morning. Suffered with my mental health since I was 14 now 27. Tried a few things over the past 2/3 years and nothing has made much if any of a difference. I was discharged from my CPN because she didn’t think she could help me and my issues weren’t her speciality. I know they work differently on everyone but I thought I’d ask here how people find them? Maybe I’ll get some hope. I usually ask on a social media group I’m part of but things are that bad Iv deleted all of it.

Worked very well for me over two difficult periods.

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 15/05/2019 11:56

Works fantastically for me. When I first started on it I felt a bit spacey and had trouble sleeping, but after a few days I felt great.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 15/05/2019 11:57

AnAC12UCOinanOCG he said to expect they’d keep me awake. But I’m napping so much lately to avoid feelings that won’t be awful, I feel like I miss so much.

They have always worked for me. No side effects. Have recently reduced from 40 to20mg.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 15/05/2019 11:58

I tried to do a bad thing to myself on these. Ended up on mirtazapine

Sparklingbrook · 15/05/2019 11:58

I was on them for a time. They didn't work instantly but once they did it was great.
My GP said it can't take away the reason for your anxiety/depression but it takes the rough edges off meaning you can manage things better.

adaline · 15/05/2019 11:59

It massively helped me when I was on it - took a while for it to work and I did feel a bit sick for about a week or so but otherwise I had no other side effects.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 15/05/2019 11:59

I had clinical depression though at that point and needed v strong pills

CJSmith2019 · 15/05/2019 12:00

Worked very well for me. I didn't get any side effects. I was petrified to start them but had a good chat with a pharmacist and it helped to allay a lot of my fears about taking them. Off them now and all well. Take care.

Jinglejanglefish · 15/05/2019 12:00

They didn't work that well for me, and they made me poo about ten times a day, never known anything like it! I'm now on sertraline which has been fantastic.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 15/05/2019 12:00

That’s all I want is something to take the edge off so I can have a small part of normality back right now I’m hardly even a wife or a mother, or anyone. Im just a shell.

My dd is on citalopram. It literally gave her her life back. She’s been on it for 2 years now. If I could find and kiss the person who developed it I would.

Mabelface · 15/05/2019 12:02

They've been a life saver for me several times. Main side affect was loss of libido and difficulty in achieving orgasm. Worth it though.

TinyMarie · 15/05/2019 12:03

I've tried several antidepressants and Citalopram worked the best for me.
I took it for 7 years and by the end was on quite a high dose but found it took the edge off enough for me to function normally and I was able to hold down my job.
I had to stop in the end as I felt they weren't working as well as they did initially which can happen but this was after 7 years.
Best of luck.

nimski · 15/05/2019 12:04

It works well for me. Been on it for 3 years since the birth of my youngest.

sucresugar · 15/05/2019 12:04

They saved my life. I'm on the highest dose now and have been for a number of years. I take it in the morning and without them I dread to think what I would be like. I function well and they don't numb everything like some anti depressants do but they help me to cope better.

Good luck I hope you're soon feeling better x

nauseous5000 · 15/05/2019 12:07

They work well, but you have to be patient and expect to feel worse before you feel better on them. I felt more depressed and very sick for about 6 weeks before they started working. You also need to reduce down slowly when you're ready to stop taking them

mrsm12 · 15/05/2019 12:07

Made everything too dull, felt like I'd no emotions which I didn't like. On lustral now and feel like myself again

BertrandRussell · 15/05/2019 12:12

“You also need to reduce down slowly when you're ready to stop taking them”
Can I just say- please don’t think about it in terms of stopping? Maybe you will- but nobody who takes insulin thinks in terms of one day stopping. For many people anti depressants are just like insulin. They correct a chemical imbalance in just the same way.

Circe32 · 15/05/2019 12:12

Citalopram was ok for me, Sertraline was horrible, but now on Fluoxetine which is great. Give Citalopram a good try and don't despair if it doesn't work for you - just ask your GP if you can try something else. Good Luck x

BettysLeftTentacle · 15/05/2019 12:14

They saved my life literally speaking.

It’s importnat to remember that everybody has an individual experience with them. Mine was that I had horrendous side effects for 2 weeks, with a small noticible change in mood around the 14th day, lesser side effects for 2 weeks after that and a complete change in mood from 6-8 weeks post first dose.

I’ve found that they give me the headspace to deal with things properly - there’s now a space between scary event and freak out. They don’t make things dull for me, they alllow me to feel my emotions and my head is much much slower. Even colours are brighter and sounds are louder!

It’s important to stick with them for 6 weeks because it’s unlikely you’ll see any benefit before them and if you do come off them, you need to wean off with your doctor supervising you, as cold turkey or doing it yourself can make you very very unwell.

RonSwansonsMustacheComb · 15/05/2019 12:17

They've helped massively with my pnd and anxiety. I don't know how to explain it but I feel lighter and much more able to cope day to day.
The first 3 days I had some side effects of nausea and insomnia but they passed quickly.
I hope they help you.

BettysLeftTentacle · 15/05/2019 12:17

Exactly what Bettrand says too. My GP says he sees 3 kids of people that use SSRIs:
Those that take them for a short period of time and never need to again.
Those that use them for periods throughout their lives.
Those that start and never stop.
He says all 3 are more than reasonable and all the ‘right way’ to go about things. The best thing to do is take it one step at a time, reevaluate later and decide what’s best for you when you have a better idea of how things are.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 15/05/2019 12:18

Iv tried so many things with nothing helping, fluoxetine, mitrazipine, amitriptylene, sertraline all paired with propanol. (Probably butchered every spelling) and nothing worked. All with a decent shot had to stop mitrazipine because I was impossible to wake up!

Worked well for me but the first couple of weeks were hard; nausea, sleeplessness and upped levels of self harm longings. Made it through that with help from DH then tickityboo
