Ds and skin problem

Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 08:47

Posting here for traffic.
I am feeling really bad for 18 year old ds as he is covered in what looks like guttate psoriasis and despite creams from the doctor it doesn't seem to be responding.
He is very distressed about as he is due to go on holiday in July and he is fretting about them.
Please does anybody know of a treatment for this that acts fairly quickly.

See a GP and push for a referral to a dermatologist. If the normal antibiotics from a GP aren't working it might be time to ramp it up to something like retin a or roaccutane.

Pigsinduvets · 15/05/2019 08:53

Going in holiday will probably help it improve as the sun usually helps reduce psoriasis.

Lolly49 · 15/05/2019 08:54

Hi my daughter has suffered on and off with this since she was 8 she is now 22.The only thing for her that works is the sun or the light box treatment at the hospital.
They are never keen on prescribing it but I have kicked up such a stink we normally get it .
If you want to pm me please feel free .

onanothertrain · 15/05/2019 08:58

Roaccutane doesn't treat psoriasis of any form.
Course of uvb will help but can usually only be given by dermatology and he may not have enough time before his holiday as it is a course of treatment lasting approx 8 weeks. Coal tar treatments can also help. If he is going somewhere sunny that should help.

LoafofSellotape · 15/05/2019 08:59

Sum usually improves it iirc but I agree with pushing for an appt with a dermatologist.

Practically though, could he look for a rash guard type top? There's so many nice ones about these days.

Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:00

Yes I thought about light therapy but I'm not sure how he is gonna manage the times with college

Apparently a cold or strep throat can start it off and he has had a cold recently. I was wondering if it's worth him having a course of antibiotics to treat any underlying infection that may of started it.

Has he had a throat swab, guttate psoriasis is often associated with a strep throat

onanothertrain · 15/05/2019 09:05

Crossed post, sorry slow typer!

Feilin · 15/05/2019 09:05

Push for dermatology. Do not take no for answer. There are tablet form medication he can take or biologics . Ive been through the whole list of treatment now and the one thing ive learned is its an autoimmune disease and while creams might make it look better or clear the outward appearance on skin that doesnt treat it on the inside. I hope he finds a treatment that works.

Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:05

I thought about a swim top because I am concerned that people will think he has something contagious if he goes in the pool.

OP posts:
Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:06

He hasn't had a throat swab

OP posts:
Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:07

Been 18 he can also be very difficult to talk to so I'm up against that as well. Sad

Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:08

I want to push for dermatology but how long before he gets an appointment

Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:09

It's controversial but I'd tell him to hop on the sunbeds as a one kff until you can sort proper treatment. Do a really low time, 2 or 3 mins or so, every other day for a couple of weeks. It's not great but it does work. I do it very occasionally ( once every couple of years) when my skin gets out of control and appointments are too long to wait and I'm in pain and miserable. As long as he doesn't rely on it as treatment and you seek medical help, a one off sunbed course will be okay. Skin conditions are the pits, he has my full sympathy!

onanothertrain · 15/05/2019 09:11

You will not get tablets or biologics for initial development of guttate psoriasis.
To be honest antibiotics would help his throat infection but the evidence says that it would not help his psoriasis.

onanothertrain · 15/05/2019 09:14

I'd either see a dermatologist privately or do what is suggested by french
You do not have enough time for a referral, clinic appointment and treatment in NHS

Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:22

That's the problem time is of importance. I don't have money for private it's awful.
I would like to buy him a light unit for god the price of them

OP posts:
Tevion10 · 15/05/2019 09:23

That should say but god

What creams have you been given?

AndSheWas85 · 15/05/2019 09:45

Child's Farm lotion, I got it in Boots, is a wonder cream for psoriasis. It takes about 2 to 3 weeks to see the full effects and needs to be applied 2 times per day.

Didn't cost more than £7 either.

Definitely go with the sun beds it is true about the throat infections.
Our gp gives antibiotics to my daughter straight away if she gets one to try to prevent a flare up.

Pigsinduvets · 15/05/2019 11:06

@Tevion10

Please be aware that sunbeds as in those at a tanning shop will not help. The actual sun will help. Medical light box therapy will help. Do not send him to a tanning shop as that won’t help and will only damage his skin.

PotatoesDieInHotCars · 15/05/2019 12:01

Unfortunately antibiotics wont help. They might even make it worse. It's not actually a skin disease. It's an immune system problem. Only steroid creams, immune system modifying drugs and UV treatment will clear it up and even then it's only temporary. I've had psoriasis for 25 years. It's a pain in the ass.

He needs to mosturise to keep the plaques flat and try to identify what things trigger a flare. Certain foods, alcohol, illness and stress. Especially stress. There are diets you can follow that reduce flare-ups but they wont cure it.

In the meantime sitting in the garden in the sunlight for short periods of time will help. Just be careful. Skin cancer will be worse.
