Ache when you wake?

If you’re over 40 do ‘ache when you wake? AIBU to think this is a normal part of ageing?

I’m 41, going to turn 42 this year. I’m a healthy weight, regularly exercise, eat well. But over the last year or so when I wake up I feel a bit...well....stiff! Like I need a spot of oil on all my joints to get me going.

And as for bending down, well I don’t enjoy that anymore.

For all you over 40’s is this you too?

Yes but it was because of a vitamin D deficiency. Once diagnosed and levels rose I now feel fine.

Maybe it’s just me then. I feel about 80 for the first ten minutes after I wake and assumed it’s all part of middle age Confused

Magnesium supplements might be your friend. I started taking them a couple of months ago for that reason - I feel distinctly less stiff and achy now. Worth a try anyway.

Thanks for that dancelike I will definitely give them a shot. I don’t fancy another 40 - 50 years getting worse.

I would argue that you were deficient in something.

I've had this before that that was my reason. I'm now 36.

I read that can be an early sign of rheumatoid arthritis... maybe see your GP?

I do since my thyroid has started to go wonky. Am 44

For me that was caused by lupus which is an auto immune disease.

I'm 43 and get like this, and bringing my left foot up to put my sock on is almost impossible. My right one isn't so bad. Once I get going I'm fine, apart from the sock thing.

I have since I was 19 but it’s because of arthritis. How long does it take to ease off? Is it easily triggered throughout the day?

I am 38 and if I get up from sleep to go to the loo in the night I can sometimes barely walk!

I am very active, run and cycle a lot and also do lots of stretching but nothing seems to stop it.

I only get it after a nights sleep. It’s not ‘pain’ as such, just a feeling of being a bit ‘creaky’ Grin My husband gets the same and just tells me it’s because we are getting on a bit.

Once I’ve had a coffee and moved about a bit I'm fine. But I wasn’t like this until my 40’s. I’m going to try some supplements seeing as the general consensus is this isn’t age related.

thatmustbe yes that’s me too! I go gym twice a week and circuits once a week and I’m fine doing that.

Get up for a wee at night I’m hobbling like I’m a hundred. What that about??!!

Yep. I'm 47 and literally hobble when I get out of bed in the morning. Even now, hours later, I'm aching and stiff. Bah!! Hmm

Yes, I'm 35 Dh is 40 - we call it the attack of the creeping body-rot. Just a different bit aches or twinges each day. I run, and I find my joints are stiff in the night and I'm waking, but I probably don't stretch as well as i should and I might take a magnesium supplement too after reading this thread!

I’m like this and I’m in my early 30’s. My lower back is knackered, there have been mornings where I’ve stood up and nearly fallen over as my back can’t handle moving yet (and during the day if I don’t stay active). Actually rather worrying how bad it will be by 40....

I get that and I have osteoarthritis. I'm trying various supplements, but basically a decent mattress, some painkillers in the morning and some gentle exercise seem to do the most.
My knees can predict thunderstorms, so there's one advantage Grin

I take Vitamin D supplements which lessen it, but I have Hypermobility Syndrome so I struggle to start in a morning. DH says I sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies when I get out of bed 😂

Just buy a firmer mattress, that should help.

If the stiffness goes after about 30 mins, I think it is normal, but if it goes on longer and is affecting your life, mention it to your GP.
I noticed I had stiffness in my 40s , hard to get up out of a chair too, if I had been sitting longer than 10 mins. I was on hrt for about 18 months at 50, for other reasons, and the stiffness went away, but returned when I stopped taking it.
I started with psoriatic arthritis in my early 50s, but that is pain and weakness in joints rather than just stiffness.

I'm 43 and I ache constantly.
I thought it was just a natural thing that happened when you reach a certain age but now I'm not so sure.....

I really recommend high dose collagen. My knees were giving me gip till I took it. I laid off it for a few weeks and the problem recurred so I don't think it's in the mind (and I am pretty sceptical about spllements etc).

Yes! Mainly by hips and lower back. I also find that I find it hard to bend down or crouch down during the day - if I crouch down to get something from a low shelf in the supermarket I have to haul myself back up by holding on to something. I'm not even 50 yet!
