Ache when you wake?

If you’re over 40 do ‘ache when you wake? AIBU to think this is a normal part of ageing?

I’m 41, going to turn 42 this year. I’m a healthy weight, regularly exercise, eat well. But over the last year or so when I wake up I feel a bit...well....stiff! Like I need a spot of oil on all my joints to get me going.

And as for bending down, well I don’t enjoy that anymore.

For all you over 40’s is this you too?

Well I’ve just ordered a load of collagen and magnesium supplements off the back of this thread Grin From what I can gather it is age related because those of you who had it younger have a diagnosis of something Flowers

The rest of us old codgers seize up when we sit or lie for too long, got it in our forties and it improved with a supplements or hormones.

There is hope :)

Good luck with the collagen Parrot. I stocked up recently when Holland and Barrett were selling them at at less than half price. I take 1500 micrograms a day.

They've really helped me and my castanet knees so I hope you are similarly improved!

TheFastandCurious · 15/05/2019 19:49

Thanks Lido. I’ll take a similar dose and report back in a month (if anyone still cares) lol. It might help someone else if they come across this thread who knows.

I've had mine since 40 - I'm now 46. I do lots of cycling and fell walking and it was really starting to spoil it - I needed to take a day off after activity, which isn't great if you're on a multi-day cycling holiday. Turns out mine was perimenopause - went on HRT last year and my aches have completely gone.

Soontobe60 · 15/05/2019 20:23

I had this until we got a new mattress, and now I can literally jump out of bed in the morning.

SallyOMalley · 15/05/2019 20:29

Yes, me too! I've always been a very still sleeper and I find that my hips knees and shoulders ache in the morning - especially on the side I tend to favour when lying down. I've tried to consciously move about a bit but it's very hard when you're asleep!

Papergirl1968 · 15/05/2019 20:38

Yes, I'm 50 and often have aches when I get up, especially if I've slept on my back.
But it's not a recent thing as I always have had. When I was 30ish I memorably asked my (mainly male) colleagues if they were stiff when they woke up...Blush

I'm 30 and I ache when I wake :(

Paddingtonthebear · 15/05/2019 20:57

I am 43 and my lower back aches so much when I wake up, absolutely radiates with pain in fact. It goes after 20 mins or so of being up. I do have disc problems with my neck which causes referred pain to shoulders and I suspect it’s now affecting my lower back too. Degenerative disc disease.

But now wondering if I should take a supplement.

Different mattresses don’t help either

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 15/05/2019 21:01

So glad I'm not the only one! I'm nearly 44 and the last year or so , my feet and ankles are stiff and tender first thing! After a couple of minutes it's fine.

Fraxion · 15/05/2019 21:09

Just buy a firmer mattress, that should help.

It took me a while to realise that my back problems were caused by my mattress. Only dawned on me when I realised I had no back issues after sleeping on numerous firm hotel mattresses! Recently slept on an Ikea sofa bed, it was rock hard and and I was like a spring chicken in the morning.

DizzyPigeon · 15/05/2019 21:09

I'm 47 and officially obese. I don't ache when I get up. I occasionally get a stiff back with certain activities, but I know what stretched to do to avoid them and it only comes back when I haven't done them for a while.

My advice? Regular massage from a great therapist (try a few) and YouTube yoga videos.

Aching at that age is unlikely to do with age. It might be a medical condition, but it's more likely that it's the type of activity that you do - eg sitting at a computer or driving a lot or repetitive actions- and lack of specific activity to counteract it.

Could be plantar fasciitis. It might be worth looking into orthotics or gel insoles. It manifests differently in different people, but that's exactly how it was with me.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 15/05/2019 21:13

Dizzy, funnily enough I had that last summer but more in the arch of my foot. You could be right! It's been since then ... . Thanks I will look into it

Oysterbabe · 15/05/2019 21:30

Yep. Knees, hips and lower back are all fucked. I'm only 38.

XiCi · 15/05/2019 21:34

I'm 47.My aches, pains and stiffness all just completely disappeared shortly after starting a low carb diet. No idea why. My GP checked for coeliac but it was negative. I feel like a completely different person. A thinner one too Grin

bobstersmum · 15/05/2019 21:37

I'm almost 38 and when I wake up I can hardly walk! It's like my legs don't work and my lower back is seized. I started after I had a spinal to have my placenta removed after first baby. Dr isn't interested.

MightyDonut · 15/05/2019 21:53

I'm stiffer than a sex starved bloke in a brothel when I awaken on a morning, mainly my back and hips. I feel that if I move too quickly they will snap clean in two, but like many others it wears off once I've sat and had my cuppa.
I've had bursitis in my right leg for around 3 years and the pain from that on waking sometimes is so bad it makes me sob.
I've tried many treatments and sadly come to the conclusion that I'm just an old giffer. 😕
