Crazy Shifts! 50hr week part time

OdeToDiazepam · 14/05/2019 18:32

Started a new job and from the beginning I stated part time over 4 days

The training was 5 days and intensive but I understood that was just for a few weeks.

Now the job has started and I'm being repeatedly put down for 5 days approx 40
Hours! Over the whole weekend too and consecutive pms which I don't get out til 1/2 even half 2 in the morning at times.

When I applied we weren't told what the exact shifts were and I've said my preference is am in the week and pm at weekends due to childcare but I also don't want to be working all weekend ever weekend as it's not fair on my family who have my children and I won't get to spend time with the kids.

I've raised the issue with 2 managers one who tried to guilt me into taking on another day that week and made out I was being unreasonable

The other said if I'm already rotad I need to find someone to pick it up so I can release the shift

I want to tell them look it's not workable for me with my children. I want to work am
In the week and maybe one weekend shift each week. Can I dictate this? I'm worried about getting in trouble.

What are your contracted hours?

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 14/05/2019 18:34

Is it care work?

hidinginthenightgarden · 14/05/2019 18:35

It depends what you discussed at the point of interview? If they agreed then it would be as requested then you would not be unreasonable to raise it again. Unless it is in your contract though, they don't have to accomodate you.

BeanBag7 · 14/05/2019 18:44

You can ask but it sounds like an inflexible workplace and it's difficult for a new employee to make a fuss if everyone else goes along with it. Can you look for another job?

UnicornDust9 · 14/05/2019 18:50

How many hours did they say was part time

PumpkinPie2016 · 14/05/2019 18:52

What sort of work is it? Anything hospitality based usually has crazy, unsolvable hours.

To be honest, you have raised it twice and got no where so I would look elsewhere.

PumpkinPie2016 · 14/05/2019 18:52

Unsociable not unsolvable!

kaytee87 · 14/05/2019 18:53

Well, what does your contract say?

slipperywhensparticus · 14/05/2019 18:56

Leave and be clear why next job discuss hours first

cuppycakey · 14/05/2019 19:03

I don't understand.

The first time you got a rota over hours, did you not say I only work x hours so this rota is wrong. I won't be able to do this additional shift? If they say you have to fix it, you just tell them it's not your mistake to rectify....

It does sound shit. I would be making plans to leave.

proudwelshmaiden · 14/05/2019 19:05

What does your contract say re hours? Did they agree to part time for was that just your preference? You must have had an idea when you accepted the job what the expectations were. If they are going over this, you can pull them up on it.

Plipplopbop · 14/05/2019 19:08

Aldi? I went part time there, never did part time, Had to leave as I couldn't do the shifts. It's standard for these places apparently, hire part time, work full time.

Abbazed · 14/05/2019 19:12

That's ft

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 14/05/2019 19:13

Is it home carer work? I did that for a while,- sounds familiar...

TheInebriati · 14/05/2019 19:17

Talk to ACAS, they advertised a part time job and it isnt.

adaline · 14/05/2019 19:19

What job is it? What does your contract say?

Todaythiscouldbe · 14/05/2019 19:21

Did they advertise part time?

needanappp · 14/05/2019 19:22

Have a look at your contract by if they advertised it as part time then it should be part time hours. Did they mention part/full time in the interview?

RosaWaiting · 14/05/2019 19:26

love your username!

you applied for a job that was only 4 days a week? How many hours?

RosaWaiting · 14/05/2019 19:26
  • by "only" I mean you should only be working 4 days a week!
OdeToDiazepam · 14/05/2019 19:28

I'm a waitress

Do yourself a favour and prepare yourself to leave. They don’t care what you can feasibly commit to and will push and push your boundaries until your in a position you’ll be at fault. It doesn’t bode well for other issues that crop up in jobs either (bet getting annual leave is a ball ache too if you chat to your colleagues).

Life’s to short to put up with this bullshit early on.

OdeToDiazepam · 14/05/2019 19:30

When I put down my availability they weren't clear on what the shifts were, for example we weren't told we'd be working for up to 10 hours with no break til half 2 on a pm!

I have my preferences and I'm not being scheduled for my worst nightmare for example

4 consecutive pm shifts which will kill me with young children as I can't have a lie in, and then day time all weekend, I won't get to see my children

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 14/05/2019 19:30

Oh and 50 hours is very illegal if you haven’t signed to opt out of the working time directive. I think that limits you to 48 hours a week.

OdeToDiazepam · 14/05/2019 19:31

Hours were only very briefly discussed as in full time or part time

We never had a proper discussion over it, then initially I was put down for 2 days and my manager said wasn't I the one who wanted weekends only - definitely not!!
