To be absolutely done with eBay

I’m so disappointed. Ordered a pair of shoes, was sent the wrong pair. Out of kindness I sent them back to the seller who promised to send me the proper ones and who now claims they haven’t arrived. Hmm
So I’m down the cost of the shoes plus two lots of postage.

It’s only a tiny amount of money but it’s the principle that hurts me- I did the right thing and ended up down, whilst some nasty little scammer is having a good old laugh at my expense.

WIBU to sack eBay off forever?!

Have you raised a complaint with eBay? They usually side with the buyer in such situations I believe.

AlaskanOilBaron · 14/05/2019 15:07

As a buyer, you'd be very unreasonable!

As a seller, not so much.

Ebay will absolutely, positively find in your favour.

BlueThesaurusRex · 14/05/2019 15:08

I’m going to raise a case (so many years using eBay and never had to do this before!)

OP posts:
IAmTheChosenOne · 14/05/2019 15:10

You should have raised a case before and the seller sends you a returns label, through their chosen courier. That way you arent out of pocket. If you havent sent it tracked/recorded then the onus is on you to prove you sent it. You would have got your initial purchase price plus postage back.

Piffle11 · 14/05/2019 15:12

Have you opened up a non receipt case in eBay? I'm pretty sure the onus is on the seller to sort it out (either refund or replace), not the buyer to just suck it up. The seller has to give proof that they were posted to you … and make sure that they don't use the receipt from the first pair. I'm pretty sure eBay can access your messages to and from the seller, so they would be able to see that you got the wrong ones initially. I know a lot of people can't be bothered, but if this seller does this repeatedly and no-one chases it up, then other buyers will get caught out. Strikes against sellers and buyers can help out others.

BlueThesaurusRex · 14/05/2019 15:12

Doh- things that I wish I’d known before! Ah well, lesson learned

OP posts:
HJWT · 14/05/2019 15:14

You have to open a return case then the sellers has to send you a return tracked label! eBay wont help you now unfortunately x

BlueThesaurusRex · 14/05/2019 15:15

Going to try and open the case now. I have a tracking receipt but Royal Mail track and trace has decided to go down today 🤬

AlaskanOilBaron · 14/05/2019 15:16

I've been on Ebay since 1999 (!) - my first purchase was a stained glass window, I remember it so well.

Since then it's changed, mostly for the worse, mostly (all?) in ways that completely disadvantage buyers.

AlaskanOilBaron · 14/05/2019 15:21

Sorry - disadvantage SELLERS not buyers.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 14/05/2019 15:24

WIBU to sack eBay off forever?!

You're extremely unreasonable ever to use the horrible expression "sack off"!

BlueThesaurusRex · 14/05/2019 15:25

Why?

It’s in The Oxford English Dictionary :)

eBay is a pretty decent marketplace but you have to know how it works and follow the rules to the letter in any kind of dispute.

You should always open a not as described case in this situation and use a pre paid label provided by the seller.

However you should be able to get your money back if the return is showed as delivered or delivery attempted. If you call eBay they should tell you the best way to proceed.

roses2 · 14/05/2019 15:29

As a seller it is also pretty crap. The past three electrical items I have sold the buyers claim don’t work despite me testing them before posting.

I use it to buy almost all clothes - I buy a lot of designer clothes for me me and the kids for 10/20% of new cost. Last week I bought a £400 designer dress for £5 inc postage!

I don’t sell things anymore as it’s not worthwhile - I donate old clothes and toys to charity shops.

BlueThesaurusRex · 14/05/2019 15:31

Thank you for the advice- I need to learn to do things properly, I think! Sad

OP posts:
Luxembourgmama · 14/05/2019 15:34

Yes I did after they denied losing an item that cost £400

Whatisthisfuckery · 14/05/2019 15:34

I’ve had it up to here with eBay as well. I just don’t need this much hassle. I bought my DP a new sat nav for her birthday. I found one for a good price on eBay. When we got it we had a look at it and it’s a European one. If you select English it says voice commands will be disabled and it won’t read out road names and directions. What is the point of having a sat nav that won’t read directions ffs. This wasn’t mentioned on the description.

I’ve just received the return label and I’m about to return it. If I don’t get my money back the earth will shake, it was £200. Every other thing I’ve bought off there has been wrong, faulty or just crap.

MadisonAvenue · 14/05/2019 15:52

I don't use it very much now. I bought an item from a seller who had stated in the listing that the item would be sent via Royal Mail. It never arrived and on contacting them they said that they'd used Hermes instead and had proof of delivery. No idea where it'd been delivered to but it certainly wasn't to my address.
I opened a case with Ebay and they sided with the seller because bloody Hermes had proof of delivery to my address despite not delivering it so I ended up with no item and no refund.

Popuppippa · 14/05/2019 15:55

ITA but I've had many more scammers as a seller than as a buyer. As a buyer, if the item was cheap but not quite what I anticipated, I'll just charity shop the item.

As a seller I have had claims made for non-arrival, even using Ebay tracked service. I know Ebay always sides with the buyer so I always refund. My most recent experience had the buyer leave feedback saying "Thanks for the gift!" the day after I refunded. They got item for free and I lost out on the item and the refund.

DelusionalDog · 14/05/2019 15:56

paypal refund your return postage if you paid for the original item via them. so if you put in a claim with them (if you have the postage receipt still), they will give you your money back. up to £15 and you can do this 12 times a year

I buy and sell on ebay ( sell as antiques and collectables business)
if something arrives that is not as desribed ie wrong size as happened to you you message seller via opening a not as described case they then either agree to a return and send you a pre paid label which you print off attach to parcel and drop off, or they may dispute it is not as described in which case you may escalate to ebay support actually very few escalate
if it is not as described it doesn't matter whether they are a business or private everyone has to accept returns of not as described or arrived damaged cases,
once you have a tracked label the seller must refund within 48 hours of parcel arriving, ( it only get tricky if it arrives back broken)
starting a case doesn't negatively impact on a seller unless unresolved.
if you change your mind it is really tough luck if it is a private seller as they don't have to accept returns,a business seller does but they will probably expect you to post back at your expense
as it is shoes you must post back with the box and anything else tissue paper in toes etc, if just the shoes are returned without box etc the seller may not need to refund you in total ( ebay have rules regarding precentages depending on how damaging not sending it all back is)
you won't get a not as described refund if you missed something vital in the description
I sell antiques, I described a rare teapot as having a cracked and repaired spout, someone didn't read properly or look at clear magnified photos, I asked them to change it to a changed mind return as it was in description they refused but ebay did side with me as it was very clear it was damaged before sale, but mostly ebay does side with buyer but it is not impossible for sellers to win cases
ebay always believe tracking so if it says delivered it is delivered both for sending and returns
This is seller protection if you send something tracked and it is marked as delivered you will not have to refund a buyer, if it is untracked the seller will have to refund

@whatis keep a note of tracking number you should get your refund within 48 hours of delivery

Fresta · 14/05/2019 16:12

I think as a buyer you are in the best position. Ebay seems to hate it's sellers these days and only really wants professional sellers, not the lowly person trying to make few pounds from their second hand items.

Did you send them back recorded delivery so you can prove the seller recived them?

katseyes7 · 14/05/2019 16:12

l sold a nice pair of ankle boots on there a few weeks ago. They were a decent high street brand and l'd only worn them three times.
Didn't have the box, but they'd been in the wardrobe with everything else.
They sold very cheaply (l started them off low, but only got one bid on them). Posted them straight off.
About two days later l got an email from the buyer saying something along the lines of "when l put them on, they were full of some kind of black plastic grit".(l am genuinely bemused as to what she was talking about as everything else l posted at the same time got brilliant feedback).
Then she said "l know they were used, but l'd like my money back please."
So l emailed her saying that l was unsure what had happened to them, but l'd like her to return them to me, and l'd refund her the payment, and both lots of postage.
So far (two weeks on), no reply. Am l wrong in thinking it was a try on? l looked at her listings and she had 60 things listed for sale. l may be wrong here but l wondered if she just wanted the money back (which was under a fiver, plus the postage) so she could sell them on?

BlueThesaurusRex · 14/05/2019 16:22

@delusionaldog thank you!

They were sent using the track and trace system.
