Disneyland, come to think of it. I really would prefer to do almost anything else.

mizu · 15/05/2019 20:28

judydenchesbloomers have an amazing time. I'm going in July and can't wait.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/05/2019 20:48

Agree that it is very short sighted to write off entire countries, islands or even regions due to certain parts being not very nice.

Especially when those places are massively varied so almost everyone should be able to find something they like within that general area. Such as Wales - beautiful countryside, outdoor activities, city stuff in Cardiff and probably other places.

Or, I've just come back from a fairly large resort on the Costa del Sol, in Spain. Not everyone's cup of tea obviously, but we chose it because we like a certain activity centre there, and the service they provide.

We stayed in a nice apartment complex next to the beach with a pool, and went up into the mountains, biking and hiking, also scuba diving and visited beautiful white villages with views, museums, walking tours, history, architecture, traditional food etc.

But our hosts would drive us up into the mountains, guide us on the best routes, provide back up in case of accidents, equipment failure etc, and ensure we got back to base safely each day. So even in a stereotypical 'Brits on the piss' destination, it is possible to have a holiday that is nothing like that, if that is what you want.

With that in mind, I would challenge anyone who says that they would never go to Spain, to come up with a reason that doesn't involve Magaluf or Benidorm type resorts, All Inclusive buffets, sunbathing or all day drinking. Because there's so much more to the country, that it's madness to not go when that type of holiday can only be found in a very small percentage of the country.

YouBumder · 15/05/2019 21:00

I’m not sure I agree it’s shortsighted or narrowminded not to want to spend ££££, 24 hours in the air and limited annual leave to visit somewhere you don’t fancy visiting. There are other considerations at playbin choosing a holiday destination than being seen to be broadminded.

DixieLandReject · 15/05/2019 21:10

Canary Islands

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/05/2019 21:28

It's not about being seen as broadminded. It's people writing off countries/Islands based on a stereotypical view of a place that is only true for a very small area of it.

Dixie says that she would never go to the Canary Islands. Does that mean that she doesn't like any of the following:

Sun at almost any time of year
Watersports - diving, snorkelling, jet skis, canoes, open water swimming
Mountain walks, views, climbing, road or mountain biking, Or more gentle walks and cycling
nature - in the sea and on land, interesting geology both under and overground and history
just about any temperature you could want at any time of year
good value for money if that's what you need
museums/culture
good food and drink, both typical of the area and international
relaxing in a nice hotel, swimming etc
childrens activities
shopping, arts, cities, museums botanical gardens etc etc.

Playa de las Americas is not typical of Tenerife, likewise for Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria or Costa Teguise in Lanzarote. All those islands have so much more to offer than that.

missmouse101 · 15/05/2019 21:33

Anywhere bloody boiling hot.

ddl1 · 15/05/2019 21:39

The more extremist Republican Christian Right states in America; e.g. Alabama.

And I agree about not wanting to go anywhere bloody boiling hot - or at the other extreme, cold and icy with slippery pavements.

I should add that we're being asked where we would go on holiday. There are places where I might go for work, for example, but wouldn't find enjoyable for a relaxing holiday!

HeronLanyon · 16/05/2019 07:49

morriszappI struggle to accept that many states are more liberal than the uk! I spend lots of time in Colorado - a state you would probably have near the top of your list - it is liberal by is standards - absolutely not as ‘liberal’ as uk.
I know east coast and mid west really well and just don’t agree at all!
Some cities are similar to uk I agree.

Fraxion · 16/05/2019 07:52

I think that's the problem with a lot of destinations, people hear of the party side of it and think the whole place is like that. Eg people associate Corfu as a party island but the north of the island is beautiful.

Mrsjayy · 16/05/2019 08:04

We went to Playas de las Americas 1 easter it wasn't party central it was just people on holiday maybe it gets "wilder" in the summer

DixieLandReject · 16/05/2019 08:06
  • I understand that but I know I can get all those things in other places in Europe such as Greece, which is my preference.

My experience of the Canary Islands hasn’t been brilliant and therefore I choose to go to other places. I am not saying the canaries don’t offer anything, just that my personal preference is to go somewhere else.

fancynancyclancy · 16/05/2019 08:14

Do people actually go to Jaywick, Thamesmead & Luton for a holiday?

MallySally · 16/05/2019 08:20

I would challenge anyone who says that they would never go to Spain, to come up with a reason

The weather
The poor accessibility
The healthcare
The flight

HellonHeels · 16/05/2019 08:23

Spanish healthcare has been great for two people i know. One became seriously ill and was admitted to hospital in a small town,.auperb care.

The other fell and had a head injury in another small town - again excellent treatment, kind caring, professional.

BonAccordSpur · 16/05/2019 08:25

Any of the British seaside resorts during UK summer hols &any of the Costa del Britsabroad...Large areas of Bali(AussieMagaluf)friggin poluted shitehole.Would deffo rtn to Japan,Mexico,Sri Lanka&S.Korea for food/culture/nature stuff tho.

MallySally · 16/05/2019 08:29

Cool, but my condition is managed here and it's fairly rare, so it would be difficult to explain certain aspects when there's a language barrier. That's a reason I wouldn't go there, which is what was asked for 🤷🏼‍♂️

StillCoughingandLaughing · 16/05/2019 09:04

This thread seems to have been hijacked by people desperate to prove how open-minded and culturally experimental they are. Not so much ‘Where would you never want to go on holiday’ as ‘Tell us where you don’t want to go on holiday and we’ll tell you why you’re an ignorant racist bigot’.

I’m sure people know Africa is a huge and diverse, but if you hate extreme heat and long flights, that’s not really relevant is it? Most people only get a couple of holidays a year. Why wouldn’t they go somewhere that DOES appeal?

TheRedBarrows · 16/05/2019 09:22

StillCoughing I don’t think that is wholly fair.
As well as the perfectly reasonable matters of choice, preferences, flights, heat etc, this thread HAS revealed the tendency for SOME people to make huge generalisations based on inferences about culture etc.

It always happens. It happens in any thread about London, the rest of the country, urban v rural etc.

It is reasonable for people to challenge sweeping generalisations.

Including of course, ‘everyone who doesn’t put Malawi or Mauritania head of their holiday bucket list is a bigot ‘.

lisalocketlostherpocket · 16/05/2019 09:24

Not saying I would never go to Spain because there are some lovely cities there I would like to see like Segovia and Santiago. But I can't get on with the lifestyle, specifically eating very late. So I'll go to Italy instead because the eating times (and the type of food) suit me much better and there are beautiful cities there, too. Plus I can speak some Italian and don't speak Spanish.

lisalocketlostherpocket · 16/05/2019 09:30

This. I may be boring going to the same places all the time but I know I will enjoy it. We go to other places too but it's always a bit stressful going to new places, finding your way round, finding good places to eat etc and it's relaxing going somewhere you've been before, where you know the drill and have your favourite places to eat.

I remember when I was a kid some family friends used to go to Jersey every year. My in laws used to go to Falmouth every year. I thought "how boring is that". And now we do the same ourselves, albeit that we go to other places as well, but now I understand that boring = relaxing and fun!

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 16/05/2019 09:33

StillCoughing you are spot on IMO

There seem to be a lot of people on this thread desperate to convince others that actually they would love it in Beruit/Turkey/Bognor/OuterMongolia

Most people don't have an unlimited budget and annual leave allowance so will naturally tend to book holidays in places they really fancy going. Our preferences will depend on lots of factors and I don't like the implication that some choices are acceptable and others aren't.
