Agree that it is very short sighted to write off entire countries, islands or even regions due to certain parts being not very nice.
Especially when those places are massively varied so almost everyone should be able to find something they like within that general area. Such as Wales - beautiful countryside, outdoor activities, city stuff in Cardiff and probably other places.
Or, I've just come back from a fairly large resort on the Costa del Sol, in Spain. Not everyone's cup of tea obviously, but we chose it because we like a certain activity centre there, and the service they provide.
We stayed in a nice apartment complex next to the beach with a pool, and went up into the mountains, biking and hiking, also scuba diving and visited beautiful white villages with views, museums, walking tours, history, architecture, traditional food etc.
But our hosts would drive us up into the mountains, guide us on the best routes, provide back up in case of accidents, equipment failure etc, and ensure we got back to base safely each day. So even in a stereotypical 'Brits on the piss' destination, it is possible to have a holiday that is nothing like that, if that is what you want.
With that in mind, I would challenge anyone who says that they would never go to Spain, to come up with a reason that doesn't involve Magaluf or Benidorm type resorts, All Inclusive buffets, sunbathing or all day drinking. Because there's so much more to the country, that it's madness to not go when that type of holiday can only be found in a very small percentage of the country.
