Posting for traffic really.

Just entered my meter readings for both gas & elec (& double checked them) & now EDF want to increase my DD to £210 a month!!! Wtf?! I live in a standard 3 bed semi, me, DH & 3 kids.

I moved to them to save money, my monthly DDs have never been over £110. I'm flabbergasted.

How much is yours?

£50 a month gas and electric with british gas. 2 adults and 1baby in a big 2 bed.

Neverpaid more than £50 a month, but i never pay what they want me to pay anyway, always pick what i want

redwoodmazza · 13/05/2019 17:07

Ours is £141 pcm - electricity and gas for a 4-bedroomed house. I am with Eon. I always have the heating on too!!! Our house is very warm.
Yours does seem very high.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 13/05/2019 17:07

Ours just went up to £170 a month that's after switching to a cheaper tariff, for me DH and a baby

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 13/05/2019 17:10

Also 3 bed semi

Elphame · 13/05/2019 17:10

£240pm for gas and electricity.

Lauzy86 · 13/05/2019 17:11

£95 a month for both on 4 bed detached new build.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 13/05/2019 17:12

How long is it since you last put your actual meter readings in?

Singlenotsingle · 13/05/2019 17:14

£209 pm for gas and electricity combined.

BMW6 · 13/05/2019 17:15

I only pay each month for what was used the month before IYSWIM, but my highest bill after the coldest month was £105 for gas (heating left on all night at 17) and £37 electric.
We have a 2 bed terrace. We are on standard tariff with BG.

Your bill is extortionate!

Ffsnosexallowed · 13/05/2019 17:15

Ours is about £130 a month, 4 bed detached

DoxxedFox · 13/05/2019 17:15

Just under £200 for family of 5, but only because we weren’t paying enough so we’ve got an additional two grand to clear.

wendz86 · 13/05/2019 17:16

£54 a month for 2 bed detached house .

Cookit · 13/05/2019 17:18

Sometimes the amount their system recommends is crazy though.
How much have you spent per month over winter in reality? Then you know, assume it goes down 50% or so for summer and take the average.

CazM2012 · 13/05/2019 17:18

2 adults and 4 children (under 8) in a 3 bed end terrace, we pay £121 per month all year round and usually get a little back in February.

anitagreen · 13/05/2019 17:20

£6 a week electric large two bed flat over two floors no gas

MollyHuaCha · 13/05/2019 17:20

Do you have double glazed windows?
Insulated loft?
A good roof?
Low energy lightbulbs?
Combi boiler instead of heating a tank of water?

These can make a big difference.

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 13/05/2019 17:23

5 bed detached, 3 adults, a child and a baby. We're with EDF and pay £85 a month but EDF want to reduce it £75!

Asta19 · 13/05/2019 17:24

These posts always confuse me a bit. It's common knowledge that people on meters are on a higher tariff. But I have meters and live in a cold Victorian 4 bed (single glazed) and even when I had 4 adults living here last year (DC grown up and a lodger!) my bills have were never as high as what I see people are paying monthly. My electric was around £50 a month. Gas varies obviously, so Summer maybe £10 a month if that. Winter it might go up to £60 a month, but that's only during the coldest weeks. TBH when I see what everyone else is paying, I'm sticking with my meters!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/05/2019 17:24

Same as yours is now, except I live in a huge detached house, it’s really old and draughty and gets cold very quickly and I have a gas Aga on full time. Your bill sounds ridiculous I agree.

Malbecfan · 13/05/2019 17:25

It would probably help to know your usage rather than the amount you pay. Our house is in 2 parts, one of which only has electric heating (2 beds), the other oil (4 beds). We have an economy 7 tariff. Each month we use around 550 units of day rate and 1500 of night (cheap) rate but we are cheapskates and DH has loads of things on timers to come on overnight. All washing, showering & the bread-maker run overnight. For this we have been paying £200 per month for our electricity bill although our lovely credit balance has now gone so I need to pay a bit more, but not the amount Ovo has requested.

Elllicam · 13/05/2019 17:25

£208 with npower, not even close to what their meter says (average £3 a day). According to them it’s not terribly accurate though 😡

AuntieDolly · 13/05/2019 17:26

Perhaps you have been underpaying for a while and need to catch up.

Petalflowers · 13/05/2019 17:27

Approx £110 a month.

When did you last submit readings? Is the increase to offset higher usage in the past?

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 13/05/2019 17:28

This is one of the main reasons why I stopped paying by direct debit and went back to the old fashioned quarterly bill service. Energy companies just kept putting the monthly fees up and up and up and making it really difficult for me to obtain any credit i'd built up with them. One time they just decided to triple my monthly payments and take the money from my DD without even asking.

My current system is brilliant. They ask for the meter reading. I tell them the meter reading. They bill me for that amount. I pay that amount. Sorted.

AnotherEmma · 13/05/2019 17:28

Do you have any arrears?
Do you take regular meter readings?
Have they based their calculations on your winter usage?
There are loads of reasons your monthly payments might be high and it's impossible to tell without more information.
There are lots of online comparison sites for getting better deals on energy. Moneysavingexpert is a good place to start.
