AIBU to be so bloody sad how Fleabag ended

QueenArnica · 12/05/2019 15:37

Got the house to myself so watched the last 3 episodes and I’m so gutted they didn’t end up together Angry

And AIBU to have fancied the priest? Blush

Had to post as none of my family or friends have watched it!

I don't think that you're unreasonable for being sad, but it was the right ending IMO. I don't think that they would have made each other happy in the long run and the important thing was that she was making her peace with her past. I thought it was beautiful.

Bayleyf · 12/05/2019 15:48

I thought it was uplifting.

She's on her own, but going to be fine!

A proper thing with the priest would have gone so disastrously wrong.

And Clare and Klare get to be happy!

Cross her dad married the awful step mum, though.

PlinkPlink · 12/05/2019 15:53

Did you get to the end of it and not realise that the real love story was between the sisters?

When you look at it that way, it's really a lovely ending.

2019Oscars · 12/05/2019 15:55

I loved the ending - I only felt sad because she was saying goodbye, to me, or us. Felt a bit like that at the end of "miranda" too.

maidenover · 12/05/2019 15:56

I thought it was a great ending. Much better than a ‘happy ever after’, which is really nothing if the sort because he had major alcoholic tendencies, that would be bound to feature very heavily in how he dealt with the conflicting emotions of him abandoning the priesthood.

Alizzle · 12/05/2019 15:57

Loved how hers and Clare's relationship developed and agree that her and the priest probably shouldn't have ended up together but it doesn't make it any less sad. Sad

Sparklesocks · 12/05/2019 15:58

I found it positive, her sister left her husband, she had a lovely moment with her dad, and fleabag was able to walk off by herself at the end without needing the viewer to follow her - she’s going to be alright.

The show was about grief and loss, and to me the ending showed that you never really get over those things - but you learn to cope and move on and you can still be happy. The priest was part of her journey rather than her happy ending.

The priest loved god, and that’s what he needed to do. But fleabag learnt she is capable of love and being loved, she’ll find it again.

QueenArnica · 12/05/2019 15:59

I’m so glad I posted as your opinions have really made me think.
In reality I think I’m most sad that it’s over! I cried when she waved at the end Grin

I also think if she and the priest had ended up together, he may have resented her for leaving the priesthood for her - or even if he didn’t, she may have worried that he did feel that deep down. It would’ve been too much for their relationship.

ManicGirl · 12/05/2019 16:01

I have developed a seriously unhealthy Andrew scott obsession after watching Fleabag so you are definitely not BU.
But if they'd ended up together it would have shown him as being someone who was willing to give up all his own beliefs just to get his leg over. Even though the ending made me blub, they both came out of it as stronger people.
Btw. You can currently get your scott fix on iPlayer as his film Denial is on there.

PlinkPlink · 12/05/2019 16:03

It's one of the best series I've seen in a long time. I was sad it ended too.

I've watched it 3 times now 🙈🙈

ThanksItHasPockets · 12/05/2019 16:05

There are two big threads in Telly Addicts with roughly equal amounts of excellent analysis and perving over the hot priest.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 12/05/2019 16:05

Did you get to the end of it and not realise that the real love story was between the sisters?

This. The way Fleabag and Claire's relationship deepened from the start of season one to the show's conclusion was a joy to watch.

CrackersDontMatter · 12/05/2019 16:07

I loved Clare's line, "The only person I'd run through an airport for, is you."

Artykitty666 · 12/05/2019 16:09

I absolutely WEPT aged ten when Assumta died in Ballykissangel after she and the priest decided to get together. And I couldn't tell anyone because it was my secret lame show I couldn't admit to anyone outside my family that I watched..

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 12/05/2019 16:16

The ending was perfect. Andrew Scott was so hot as the priest.

Jemima232 · 12/05/2019 16:18

(grin)

Bravelurker · 12/05/2019 16:28

I was very late to this and watched the lot 3 days ago. I cried sad tears then laughed like a drain at the fox going after the priest.

Huskylover1 · 12/05/2019 16:29

When he told her to kneel in the confessions box, did anyone else think he was going to walk in, with his knob out? Blush

HBStowe · 12/05/2019 16:33

I think it is sad, but also I think it would have been wrong for them to end up together. He would have resented her for ‘taking’ him away from the priesthood, and she was using him as a foil for all her unresolved and complicated feelings about love. She hadn’t addressed those, and the relationship with him wasn’t the answer.

It was sad though!

HBStowe · 12/05/2019 16:35

I loved Clare's line, "The only person I'd run through an airport for, is you."

I bawled at this then phoned my sister!

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 16:35

I was angry that he made her feel like he might leave for her, that he shouldn’t have given her that hope. I really felt angry with him! But I was happy for her that she was so much stronger and had healed many of her wounds

Trippedupagain · 12/05/2019 16:36

I thought the significant thing with nasty stepmother was when she said something like 'so are you going to look after your father then, in his old age? No, didn't think so.' There were a few very subtle hints I thought that their dad was losing the plot slightly (remember where he welcomed everyone to the gangbang at the meal?) Sometimes his inarticulate mumblings and discomfort with Fleabag seemed to be a real difficulty with memory. Stepmother was maybe doing a bit of a deal for his money and companionship. Anyone else think that?

waterlego · 12/05/2019 16:44

Trippedup, yes, I definitely got the impression that Fleabag’s dad was succumbing to dementia.

PlinkPlink · 12/05/2019 16:46

@HuskyLover1

🤣🤣🤣🙈🙈

Yes, unfortunately I did 🙈🤣🤣🤣
