To not appreciate pockets in dresses

I think I’m going to get flamed for this, but I recently bought a couple of dresses from Boden with pockets and I’m so underwhelmed.

I don’t think dresses with pockets work

1 they are rarely deep enough to hold anything precious securely (keys, phone)

2 if the dress is fitted they ruin the lines but if it’s not then when you sit, and the fabric folds at your hips there’s a 50/50 chance the heavy contents of the dress will tip out of the pocket

3 if it’s a swishy dress your pocket contents jangle as you walk

AIBU?

I agree, I do not know why there is an obsession with having pockets on dresses on MN, they ruin the line of the dress, if you put anything in the pockets it looks like you have massive hips or pull the dress down on one side if it’s something heavy like keys.
I have been known to sew up pockets on summer dresses.
Also I carry around so much junk I would need a bag anyway.

LannieDuck · 11/05/2019 14:12

Where do you put a tissue if there isn't a pocket? (And tissues aren't precious / don't jangle / won't ruin the lines)

Funny how men never seem to have to worry about pockets 'ruining their lines'.

Greenteandchives · 11/05/2019 14:12

I rejected a couple of otherwise nice dresses in Next this week because of how badly the pockets sat on the hips.

GimmeBread · 11/05/2019 14:13

Pockets are great o my if they're angled and on the sides. They are for hands only - not stuff! Maybe a tissue. One tissue. Not a pack.

GimmeBread · 11/05/2019 14:14

O my? Only.....

Iggly · 11/05/2019 14:14

They’re there to look nice, not offer any practical solution

My handbag is massive - a pocket is not going to be anywhere near big enough 😂

AntennaReborn · 11/05/2019 14:15

I would only ever put a tissue in dress pockets, or maybe a tampon. Anything heavier/ bigger and the whole thing looks odd

DesperadoDan · 11/05/2019 14:17

Funnily enough I think men who wear suits and have their pockets bulging with keys, a wallet and a phone ruin the lines of their suit. It looks scruffy.
On the other hand I think it’s fine to use jean pockets whether your a man or a woman. Maybe because jeans are a much more casual look.
I don’t see it as a man/woman thing, I see it as a bulging pockets looks scruffy thing.

Shock I LOVE pockets on dresses. I have a few from Seasalt I wear for work and they hold lots. Phone, wallet, many pens, A5 notebook (admittedly jammed in), stethoscope, tissues. Sometimes a power pack and charging cable... I will admit that level of cargo does very little for the line of the dress but it's so much less annoying than having to keep track of a bag. I feel free!

Kelsoooo · 11/05/2019 14:20

Generally I just want somewhere to put my hands.

Where do our fucking hands go?

Yes, but that's their choice.

No-one (except maybe the occasional MN poster!) criticises them for having bad lines. Shops don't stop putting pockets in men's clothes incase they have the temerity to use them and spoil their lines...

negomi90 · 11/05/2019 14:21

I've stopped buying work dresses without pockets. I need them for my phone, pens notes etc.
I can't carry a bag at work, and need my phone constantly (as a calculator, drug checker etc).

I like pockets for my hands too. OP you are being very unreasonable.

They give me somewhere to put my hands. I move my hands a lot when I'm talking, and it makes me feel less self conscious if I can just tuck them away when I realise they're becoming a distraction.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 11/05/2019 14:28

I make all of my own clothes and I always add pockets, or redesign the ones in the pattern. I even have an infinity scarf or six with hidden zipped pockets in them. I love a patch pocket, but cargo pockets are good too and even an inseam one can be fine if you understitch the seams properly.
A huge part of the problem is the poor quality of a lot of ready to wear clothing. A little more thought would make a huge difference. If the pockets are poorly placed, the wrong size/shape or badly sewn then it isn't much better than having no pockets at all.

RubberTreePlant · 11/05/2019 14:28

Exactly!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/05/2019 14:29

I went back for more of those Next dresses because of the pockets... I need to carry spare camera batteries and keys with me when working.

As no dress fits me well without some modifications I just pinch the pockets as needed... I've even added deeper pockets to some. That's far easier than it sounds, honestly Smile

sackrifice · 11/05/2019 14:31

In the sink love.

SheldonandMama · 11/05/2019 14:32

Totally agree. I have a bit of an tummy and pockets just make it worse. If you have wider hips, pockets can make them look wider if they're the diagonal type. Fine for perfect figures obvs.

Yesnomaybeidontknow · 11/05/2019 14:36

Ahhh that’s what I’m doing wrong! I have DTs aged 3 so my hands are usually one on each twin Grin

Even if I wear trousers and a jacket, I prefer jacket pockets - they just feel more secure and accessible to me. I have a large bum, which might contribute to this, but I’ve lost a debit card shoved into jeans pockets before as it fell out when I sat down

They remind me of the over dresses women used to wear in the 60s and 70s to "do the housework" . For that reason, I hate them!
