To not appreciate pockets in dresses

I think I’m going to get flamed for this, but I recently bought a couple of dresses from Boden with pockets and I’m so underwhelmed.

I don’t think dresses with pockets work

1 they are rarely deep enough to hold anything precious securely (keys, phone)

2 if the dress is fitted they ruin the lines but if it’s not then when you sit, and the fabric folds at your hips there’s a 50/50 chance the heavy contents of the dress will tip out of the pocket

3 if it’s a swishy dress your pocket contents jangle as you walk

AIBU?

YABVU. Go sit in a corner and thing about what you have done.

I generally don't like pockets on a dress. Tbh, if I'm wearing a dress it's because I'm dressed up and want to look fancy. Pockets tend to ruin that.

Jess Cartner- Morley covered this perfectly in the Guardian this morning:

When a dress has pockets, it takes on a different vibe. It doesn’t matter that you can’t carry anything more than a lip balm in the aforementioned pocket without ruining the line of the dress. Just the fact that they are there, for you to jam your hands into when you feel awkward at a party, or to put your office swipe pass in so you can carry a cup of coffee, changes the personality of the dress. This dress is your friend.

I'll just leave this here...

Depends on the dress. Dresses for going out I can cope without pockets. But at work I get so annoyed if I have no pockets. We have a reasonably big site, I have meetings in other buildings and I need somewhere to put my phone and pen as I walk across site. No one carries bags to a 1h meeting. I've just been supervising some work that means I can wear jeans every day and the bliss of being able to put my phone in the back pocket!

My feelings are clear.

You are the MOST unreasonable OP I have ever come across.

Seriously what the fuck am i suppose to do with my hands?!

LadySainsburySeal · 11/05/2019 15:04

I found a skirt in matalan with deep pockets the other year. It was fab. I could go out without my bag!

Alsohuman · 11/05/2019 15:11

I’m an inveterate hands in pockets gal, I love a full skirt with deep pockets.

YANBU.

I tried a lovely smart dress on in next the other day. Returned it because it had hideous disgusting pockets that sat awkward on my hips.

I have two tulip dresses that have pockets and while they look OK, the pockets are so wide you can't put anything in them because it would just fall out. I can't even put my hands in them, because it just makes the dress ride up and flash my knickers. Pointless.

If you need pockets, wear trousers to work like the rest of us.

PCohle · 11/05/2019 15:17

YANBU . Totally agree. Pockets always look shit.

GimmeBread · 11/05/2019 15:18

I'm wearing this Next dress on holiday, dead comfy and it has side pockets so I can stroll along the promenade or stand at a bar with a glass of something alcoholic in one hand, other hand in pocket, all casual. Breezy, you know?

This is not me btw. I'm older, fatter and shorter 😉

That's the dress... bought a size too large to accommodate my sway back. I had to lift the armholes (I cheated, did it the easy way) and throw in a couple of long darts and it fits nicely.

I too am an older short round Smile

A PP said "wear trousers to work if you need pockets" and then rather snarkily "like the rest of us"

A/. Other than Levi's jeans I seriously struggle to find a pair of trousers that fit well and look nice. Long legs, no hips and no bum makes it extremely difficult.

B/. Trousers aren't always overly comfortable in my line of work, or none that fit the above criteria are. A gorgeous pair of suit trousers for H&M look lovely, but are very uncomfortable and not very practical for my line of work at all.

C/. Pockets on trousers suitable for work aren't very helpful. Two pairs of suit trousers I own, neither have pockets that fit my phone and a pen slides out as soon as I crouch down because they're diagonal.....

D/. I prefer dresses/skirts. From an entirely shallow POV, they just look nicer on me.

Real question, why don't women's jackets have pockets? I don't mean coat jackets, but suit jackets or blazers. Out of the four I own....one just one, has a pocket.
