To absolutely hate this response to women wanting a baby

Whether it's a woman currently without children but wanting them, or a woman with children already.

"Get a dog."

Sorry - I think it's AWFUL. And if I were MNHQ I'd ban anyone who said it. I am hard pushed to think of a more unpleasant response.

And yes, I was subjected to such comments during years of infertility, especially the prolonged years of secondary infertility after dd. I have no interest in having a dog. A dog is an animal and, to me, in no way comparable to having a baby.

Based on the experience of a few friends with dogs - dogs are far more tying than babies. Babies can go most places with you. Dogs can't.

But I might gently suggest that some of them need to get a life. There are so many options for living a purposeful and joyful life that going into a permanent sulk because one of them happens to be unavailable to you is disproportionate.

What a disgusting attitude. It’s not a “sulk”. Judging infertile women fir their feelings of unhappiness and loss is horrible.

I have 2 kids, I also have a dog. I would love another child but unlikely that we will ever have one. My dog does not fill that hole so it's a stupid thing to say to people who have children and a very insensitive thing to say to people who can't have children.
