I stole a cat.

A local cat.
For the last year he's got progressively worse.
Rspca called. Came 3 times. Twice cat wasn't about. Once cat was about but owner wasn't. They were absolutely useless.

Called local rescue. They agreed cat was in a state but had no legal ground to remove him.
Scanned him. No chip.

Knocked on owners door and they refused to sign him over.

Rescue staff tried again. We're very upset.

2 months passes again.

I see cat. He is absolutely SKIN AND Bones. Covered in fleas. Weeping eyes. Heaving breathing.

He followed me home and I fed him.

I take photos and call a local rescue. They see the state of him and come immediately.

They scan him. Still no chip.

I lie and say I don't know who he belongs to.

They take him. It's been 2 weeks now.

They've sent me photos. He's been vert treated. In a Foster. Flea treated. Gaining weight.

Neighbours haven't put up posters or seem bothered.

WIBU?

I'm pretty straight laced but I think you've absolutely done the right thing!

Poor thing, hopefully he can enjoy the rest of his life now.

MensWithVens · 10/05/2019 16:40

This is a post from the rescue.

I'd been saying for ages I was going to do it but always chickened out. That morning he looked so miserable I just thought 'he's going to die otherwise'.

I stole a cat years ago.
The owners thought that his broken leg was just "for attention", so I put him in the basket on the front of my bike and took him to a rescue place.

Appropriate it is Superhero day today in my area op....

HeckyPeck · 10/05/2019 16:44

Oh the poor thing.

Great job OP!

CupOhTea · 10/05/2019 16:46

Yanbu. Bastard owners AngrySad

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/05/2019 16:47

YANBU. I hope he finds the loving home he deserves soon.

LoafofSellotape · 10/05/2019 16:48

That's how we aquired our cat, he was skin and bones and he decided to this was his new home. As my vet said "Cats vote with their feet."

SirVixofVixHall · 10/05/2019 16:50

I did this once too. My friend’s next door neighbour was abroad for months, having major building work done, and had left her tiny cat to be fed by the builders. She got pregnant, so friend catnapped her and gave her to me. A week later she had three kittens. I had her for the rest of her life and she was such a lovely cat.
So glad you took this poor cat away, they should have been prosecuted and banned from getting another. Grrrr.

skybluee · 10/05/2019 16:50

You saved his life.

Letsnotusemyname · 10/05/2019 16:51

I’d have done the same. My daughter has done much the same.

Just keep quiet if asked about it.

BungleIsTheNextIt · 10/05/2019 16:53

That poor baby. You did the right thing OP, well done you!!! Not all heroes wear capes...

diddl · 10/05/2019 16:54

Well done.

Gorgeous cat-very unusual looking.

specterlitt · 10/05/2019 16:54

Can he be adopted? I would be interested. Where are you based? I'm in London, UK.

You actually did the right thing, please do not think otherwise.

DeaflySilence · 10/05/2019 16:54

If they were concerned about him, presumably they could contact the local rescue and ask if he'd been found?!

They will probably assume he's been road kill. Trouble is, they will possibly get a vulnerable wee kitten to console themselves with Sad.

DingDongDenny · 10/05/2019 16:55

My old neighbours abondoned both their cat and their rabbit. Their cat moved in with us and then we took it with us when we moved house and their rabbit was left for 2 weeks in snowy weather roaming local gardens (mostly ours) They were told repeatedly it had escaped but weren't arsed

We gave the rabbit to the local rescue and said we didn't know who the owners were. I would do the same again and I think you were absolutely right. Some people shouldn't have pets

ThomasRichard · 10/05/2019 16:57

YANBU. I hope he has a happier life now.

DP ‘stole’ a cat when she miaowed endlessly outside his bedroom window one snowy night. He let her in to warm up and she’s still there many years on.

Zakana · 10/05/2019 16:57

You are a good person, that cat needed you to take him. YANBU in the kindness and humanity you have shown that poor neglected cat. I would do the same — but I prefer animals to people anyway!—

allmycats · 10/05/2019 16:57

WELL DONE !!! You did not steal him, you SAVED him.
Just watch out that they don't get another, if they do report them to the rescue that have helped with this one.

DareDevil223 · 10/05/2019 16:58

Well done OP, you have saved that poor, beautiful animal's life. I would have done the same. I hate bastards who hurt and neglect animals Angry

BertrandRussell · 10/05/2019 16:59

My sil used to steal pets all the time. She always insisted they were strays. Mil kept having to take them back and apologise.

misscockerspaniel · 10/05/2019 17:00

100% the right thing to do (but I think you should delete the post with his picture as he is quite identifiable, not being a bog standard tabby) Flowers

sideorderofchips · 10/05/2019 17:00

Many many years ago my dad was working as an electrician and working on a building site of houses being knocked down

In one he found a black cat that had been abandoned in the house. He took her home and she lived with them for another ten years

BertrandRussell · 10/05/2019 17:00

In fairness to sil, she was 5/6 when she used to do this!

AnnieMay100 · 10/05/2019 17:00

You done the right thing and you should be really proud of that. Fingers crossed the cat gets a lovely home now. I hope the owners get banned from owning pets again Angry it’s disgusting how some people treat animals
