To be sad that I may not pick up and carry my child again?

I'm pregnant and can't pick up my 3 year old (he's tall, so more like a 5 year old). Silly, hormonal me is worried that by the time the baby is here and I'm healed from a c-section, my first-born will be too big/old to be picked up. Does anyone else still carry their children after 3?

OP posts:

I've had this moment! Don't worry though, my 7 year old will very occasionally let me pick him up still, for fun or when he's very tired/sad (and none of his mates will see) 😊

CookieSwirlC · 10/05/2019 14:41

I can still manage to pick up my 6 year old and carry her for a short while. She’s in 7-8 or 9-10 clothes as well so not petite. Don’t worry it’s just the hormones talking.

my2bundles · 10/05/2019 14:42

My son was around 5 when he stopped wanting to be picked up. But he is now 11 and we still hug all the time and he cuddles up while we watch TV. It's just as lovely as picking him.up x

blackteasplease · 10/05/2019 14:43

I still carry my 5yo! He is very heavy for his size (looks slim but weights a ton) so I wouldn't worry!

ladymalfoy · 10/05/2019 14:44

Cuddles on your lap. My DD even sits on my lap whilst I’m having a wee!

YourDaughter · 10/05/2019 14:45

My 5 year old loves to be picked up, snuggled and carried. My 8 year old still asks to be carried to bed. Plenty of time yet OP!

SmarmyMrMime · 10/05/2019 15:08

I can still carry my 8 yo who comes up to my shoulder!

I was giving him piggy backs a couple of weeks ago, he just has to wrap his legs around me so his feet don't knock my knees and get in the way.

When I was pregnant, I was on crutches for SPD so couldn't pick him up.

kitkat463 · 10/05/2019 15:13

erm I still occasionally pick up my 10 year old when they ask ( they are nearly bigger than me). don't worry you've far more firsts than lasts to come.

EleanorLavish · 10/05/2019 15:14

My 14yo son still loves a cuddle!

MaMisled · 10/05/2019 15:17

My 20, 21 and 25 yr olds were discussing this at Easter! Apparently they vaguely remember how being carried made them feel and still miss it!!! Ouch.

HolesinTheSoles · 10/05/2019 15:18

I have a very tall 7 year old who still gets picked up occasionally. I certainly don't carry him down the street any more but he'll come up for a cuddle.

StealthPolarBear · 10/05/2019 15:19

I can still lift and cuddle my 12yo and regularly do with the 9yo. Your problem will be lifting both :)

annikin · 10/05/2019 15:21

Still lifting my 12 yo occasionally. Plenty of time yet!

Damntheman · 10/05/2019 15:22

My SIL will still occasionally pick up her 13 year old for a laugh and he's almost a head taller than her 😂

CherryPavlova · 10/05/2019 15:24

Gosh yes. Tired seven or eight year old on long walk, or if unwell. Twenty year old still has piggy back from her father.

MTBMummy · 10/05/2019 15:38

DD (9) still likes to be carried to bed (and she's not far off my height)

DS (5) insists on being carried out of bed every morning.

So you've got a got few years yet

DustyMaiden · 10/05/2019 15:44

I never thought about this stuff before but now it has occurred to me that I always put my DS to bed on school nights. He leaves school on Tuesday so I will never do it again. Makes me sad. ( yes he is 18 but has Aspergers).

BookWitch · 10/05/2019 15:47

My 17 year old comes and sits on my knee on the sofa sometimes.
Usually when she's had a tough day!

crosser62 · 10/05/2019 15:48

We have a huge sofa with tonnes of room yet my 6 year old insists on sitting ON me all the time.
Best cuddles ever.

My 16 year old will allow a singular fist bump only.

MyOtherProfile · 10/05/2019 15:48

My two are 11 and 13 and still try to get me to pick them up!

Chocolateandcarbs · 10/05/2019 15:49

I pick up my 4 year old most days. Don’t worry x

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/05/2019 15:51

It'll be fine. This reminds me of a thread where someone mentioned that you rarely realise when you've just done something for your child the last time. Redoubling my parental efforts to always get a goodbye kiss, tell him I love him every day and give him a hug a bedtime. I wish I remember the last time I properly carried him, it's so lovely and close.

SheldonSaysSo · 10/05/2019 15:52

Don't worry I still carry my 9 year old! Not for long admittedly but for a sneaky cuddle.

Greencustard · 10/05/2019 15:53

Yes there's a poem called 'the last time'. I don't know how to share links. It brings a lump to my throat every time I read it.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2019 15:54

Wait 10 years and he might be able to carry you instead - that's something to look forward to 😂
