I’m starting my first ‘proper’ job out of uni soon and the company will be paying for further professional qualifications so I’ll be locked in for 3 years after them. Pretty standard, but it has made me wonder how often people tend to change companies.

People my age haven’t really moved around much yet and my parents/their friends seemed to stay with the same employer for decades!

16 months and I'm ready to move. The company is a shambles. One of he directors doesn't have a clue what he's doing in terms of running a business.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 10/05/2019 15:13

1st job - 1yr
2nd - 9yrs
3rd - 1yr
4th - 6yrs
current - 3yrs

I've stayed where I'm comfortable and moved on when I've felt I've needed to, even in companies I've hated I've lasted a min of a year so it looks good on the CV.

forestafantastica · 10/05/2019 15:15

Current job two months. Job before that, four and a half years. Job before that two years. Before then I was freelance for six years and then four years in the job before that.

SherlockSays · 10/05/2019 15:21

Current place (public sector) 3 years, my last place (private) was 10 years. I don't like to move companies if I can help it.

I won't be moving out of the public sector now, very unlikely I'll move on at all because it's good pay, better pension and extremely flexible. They are also paying for my qualification but I'm only 'locked in' for a year.

Lazypuppy · 10/05/2019 15:22

First company was 8years (4 different roles)
2nd company i'm 4 years in and don't plan to leave. Its a huge organisation so changing role is like getting a new job

BlitheringIdiots · 10/05/2019 15:31

27 years

Applesbananaspears · 10/05/2019 15:36

I stayed in my first job 4.5 years and generally move every 3 years or so. I have been in my current role for just over a year and plan to do 2-3 years more and then I think I have 2 more moves in me.

Purpleartichoke · 10/05/2019 16:45

My first job after grad was 3 years. It was one of those intense, but good for the resume type jobs. I’ve been at my second job, the one I actually set as my goal, for 19 years. I expect to keep this job until I retire.

flumposie · 10/05/2019 16:49

17 years teaching at my current school. Aged 48.

HollaHolla · 10/05/2019 16:54

Job 2 - 18 months
Job 3 - 1 year
Job 4 - 2.5 years
Job 5 - 6 years
(Jobs 2 -5 all with same employer, but got promotions)
Job 6 - 8 months
Job 7 - 9 months

Higher education, so a lot of contract roles.

bruffin · 10/05/2019 16:57

sideorderofchips · 10/05/2019 17:05

Two years. No intention of leaving

PumpkinPie2016 · 10/05/2019 18:38

I did 5 years at my first job (from uni)

Been at my current job 3 years and have been promoted during that time. No intention of leaving at present.

Biffsboys · 10/05/2019 18:43

31 years . Only another 15 to go 😆

Newnyham · 10/05/2019 18:46

I love the range of ages on Mumsnet! People at the start middle and (almost) end of their careers.

Thank you to all who've indulged my curiosity and made me feel like 3 years isn't too long for one place.

My job I did along with a levels and uni I did for 5 years. First grad job was 3 years to the day: handed my notice in for the first day I could leave after I got my final exam results. In my current org 7 months so far: am already thinking about how I can expand my role but no plans to move organisations any time soon.

Soosiesoo · 10/05/2019 18:49

14 years from the age of 19! Blush

3 different roles (same dept) and qualifications achieved though.

I get great holidays and flexibility and terrified to give that up whilst my children are young.

Crunchymum · 10/05/2019 18:51

Still at my "first job after Uni" and I graduated on 2001. So I'm coming up to 18 years Shock

Company has been bought out a few times and there has been lots of restructuring and change over the years and my role evovled - I've had promotions and am now PT.

HeyNannyNanny · 10/05/2019 18:55

I've never stayed in a job for longer than 18 months (I'm 28, been working FT since 18).
Most of my roles have lasted approx 6 months.
I earn 6 figures, so it's not affected me career wise.

HOWEVER I'm in a very abnormal industry, I doubt this would work in most jobs

YahBasic · 10/05/2019 18:56

1st job - 2 yrs 2 months
Then a 2 year break to go back to uni & travel
2nd job - 1 year
3rd job - 14 months so far.

I’ve been promoted already, so think I’ll be here at least another year. We’re also thinking of TTC next year, so won’t move if that happens.

Each time I’ve moved jobs, it’s because I’ve left the country/area. I’ll only leave this job for a particular role within a specific company. This current company have lots of UK offices & DH’s job may involve relocation, so it’s almost worth me sticking it out for that.

ineedanewjobplease · 10/05/2019 18:56

13 years. Should've left 5 years ago but have stayed for various reasons.

I'm now, for the first time, seriously looking into what else is out there and taking the time to do applications. It won't go down well with my employers but I'm hoping something comes up soon 🤞🏻

HeyNannyNanny · 10/05/2019 18:57

I would say that a 3 year stint in one place vs 6 half year stints in different places looks a hell of a lot better on a CV.

IndigoSpritz · 10/05/2019 18:58

Just over ten years with current employer but I've been working at the same site for twenty-three years.

LegoLady95 · 10/05/2019 19:00

18 years and no intention of leaving. 3 maternity leaves and 3 promotions in that time. Started full time, now part time.
