I was totally shocked by that picture. I don’t buy the stupid mistake angle either. He is a public broadcaster who will be monitoring the media for content. It is absolute bollocks that he didn’t know the baby was Meghans. He knew exactly what he was inferring and either didn’t care or felt so secure in his position that it didn’t matter.

I would imagine the bbc does regular diversity training for its staff like other public bodies. If a civil secant or nurse had posted that, they’d be reprimanded too. Being in a public position, there are additional expectations.

The fact that he was so blatant about it and doubled down since makes me wonder if he's got dementia or something. In which case he needs to be fired and get expert help.

He’s not racist and anyone on this thread who thinks he is is the stupid one, quite frankly. At worst he’s been daft and mean spirited about the royal baby. He’s posted pictures of dressed up chimps before as a means of being irreverent about news stories of the day and possibly I’ve seen him do it before. The fact the baby is mixed race won’t have occurred to him (do most people give it that much headspace anyway? I fucking don’t). I don’t doubt that this was daft. It must look dreadful if you don’t know him or his work. But there’s no way, out of a 40/50 year broadcasting career and intelligent output, that he suddenly decided to torpedo his career and reputation with what you think it looks like. There’s no way. He must be mortified.

I guess some racist people are so racist that they don't know they're racist. But it's a shocking photo. And if he really didn't see anything wrong with it before being told then I think it shows how ingrained his racism is, that he could think it's acceptable!

Sadly I was in the lounge of a rather posh gym last night and a guy on the next table said to his dd who looked about 12yp, "have you seen this photo about the royal baby" and held his phone up to her. I looked over and it was that tweet. Daughter giggles as does dad who then says he's going to forward it to someone. I was shocked that people think it's funny and show it to their kids! It's bloody racist.

I can't get my head round this. I'm not a fan of his. But I know he's an intelligent man. So, to post this?

It's incredibly bad form to call people stupid for calling out racism as they see it. If you don't agree there are ways of articulating it other than calling people stupid.

Regardless of your thoughts on him I don't think you've shown kindness or empathy to poster's personal experiences of racism, just called us stupid for not agreeing with you.

If he was mortified he wouldn't have lied about knowing which couple had the baby was (which he absolutely lied about, having posted about the couple so recently beforehand) or lashed out at those who saw racism in his post.

Going by his first hand responses to the story, he isn't mortified, he's pissed off he's been called out.

JacquesHammer, what more can you do? It was misguided and misinterpreted - how prostate do you need to make yourself? Why did the media pick this up and make it bigger than it needed to be, and turn it into something more? There’s a huge ‘royal baby racism’ story out there now when it didn’t need to be that or brought to the attention of the entire country.
