@zampa - no time to send lots of links but just wanted to say this was well reported very recently

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2019 19:10

Millwall - with an often referred to terrible image - have done an awful lot of work with regards to racism (and hooliganism).

Unfortunately they - like all clubs - still have a definite racist element (and still a definite hooligan element, do these two cross? Probably!) as evidenced by racist chanting during the FA Cup earlier this year.

It would be foolish to suggest Millwall have a bigger problem than other clubs, but equally foolish to pretend they have no issues.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/05/2019 19:10

I've not had the news on today so only just heard about this, and while it takes a lot to shock me, this has managed it

What the hell was he thinking?? No ifs or buts - this just isn't something which should ever enter anyone's mindset, never mind posting images

Maybe he didn't actually want his job any more (?) but anyway that doesn't matter; it's just a good thing he's gone

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2019 19:12

Give it a generation or two and that tweet would go by without any offence taken
Nonsense. I'm a generation or two behind him, I understood the racial undertone

hellenbackagen · 09/05/2019 19:12

Archie's great grandfather made far worse intentional racial slurs.

The Chinese "slitty eyed" comment anyone?

I don't for one moment think Danny Baker meant this as a racist slur . Stupid and not funny but I think it's been taken out of context.

Unlike the many racist slurs Prince Philip has made .

Zampa · 09/05/2019 19:12

Millwall are known for having racist chants

As posted, I've been a ST holder for years and have only witnessed 2 incidents of racism. Both inexcusable but to start accusing Millwall fans of racism as a group is unacceptable. I've never heard racist chants and as for being known for them, I repeat, bollocks.

Zampa · 09/05/2019 19:14

It would be foolish to suggest Millwall have a bigger problem than other clubs, but equally foolish to pretend they have no issues

No greater issue than society as a whole and in fact due to stereotypes do more to combat racism than many other organisations.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2019 19:15

I don't for one moment think Danny Baker meant this as a racist slur
So what was it meant to mean? If it wasn't a comment on Archie's ethnic origins, what was it mean to symbolise?

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2019 19:16

No greater issue than society as a whole and in fact due to stereotypes do more to combat racism than many other organisations

So you don’t think the incidence this season is a problem?

I think you’re bizarrely taking this personally, a known element of hooliganism/racists doesn’t translate as “all fans are racist”.

Turning a blind eye is a massive problem as is minimising due to “the work they’ve done”.

DickieDonkey · 09/05/2019 19:17

I’ve always thought that he was an awful broadcaster, rambling on about shite and boring listeners to tears. Now he has also revealed himself to be a racist. a vile man that appears to be lapping up the attention. I am glad that the BBC acted swiftly and sacked him.

Clawdy · 09/05/2019 19:17

Apparently he is now saying he didn't realise the baby was mixed race, because he didn't know who the parents were, just that it was a "royal" baby!

Alsohuman · 09/05/2019 19:20

It’s ridiculous to compare a comment made 30 odd years ago by 97 year old Duke of Edinburgh with a tweet posted yesterday by a 62 year old broadcaster who absolutely should know better.

None of this what about DoE? What about Farage? has any relevance at all. A racist offensive tweet was posted by a man who knows perfectly well it was vile and offensive and hasn’t got the decency to acknowledge it.

DecomposingComposers · 09/05/2019 19:22

Clawdy
I heard that interview on the news.

What a twat. Does he really think we were all born yesterday?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/05/2019 19:22

Stupid and not funny but I think it's been taken out of context

Oh lord, not the "context" excuse again; if anything the context makes it worse. You'd need to live on Mars not to know a mixed race Duchess and a Prince have just taken their new baby home and Baker is a broadcaster for pity's sake

In which universe would anyone with a brain not know the significance of the image?? Hmm

ThatCurlyGirl · 09/05/2019 19:27

I don't understand how people can think a viable excuse / defence of his behaviour is that effectively "other people do it too"!!!

Other football clubs also having racist chants doesn't discount Millwall's!racist chants, Prince Philip's ignorant and racist remarks don't discount Danny Baker's.

If your child was bullied at school would you really say no harm done if other kids are bullied too?

Two wrongs (or countless wrongs in this case aka racism) don't make a right.

derxa · 09/05/2019 19:27

He's got a tour on just now. For people like him any publicity is good publicity. Arsehole

HeronLanyon · 09/05/2019 19:27

But the context is he does a slot called ‘chimps dressed as famous people’. Surely this is what he was thinking. Listeners would have known this. Stupid stupid for not realising that it would be seen as racist in the context of this baby.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/05/2019 19:28

Oh, and FWIW I fully agree about the ghastly, racist Duke of Edinburgh

Unfortunately, it's not open to any of us - not even the BBC - to get rid of him, so I guess all we can do is be thankful we don't have to listen to him any more

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2019 19:30

Surely this is what he was thinking. Listeners would have known this

The arrogance of assuming everyone listens to him, maybe?

ThatCurlyGirl · 09/05/2019 19:30

Also surely if he was posting an image in direct response / commentary of the royal baby photo call in question, he would have seen the photos, which were clearly not of William and Catherine?!

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2019 19:30

Just to clarify I meant his own arrogance!

RedDogsBeg · 09/05/2019 19:34

All this what about Nigel Farrage, what about the DOE - what about them did they post a racist tweet yesterday? Are they employed by the BBC?

We ignore and forgive because even though x did y, z did something even though not the same thing in the same circumstances sometime, somewhere?

Zampa · 09/05/2019 19:36

@jacqueshammer I don't think I'm minimising the racism of DB or of some individuals who attend Millwall matches and I apologise to any who interpreted it a such. There's no excuse for racism in any form.

I've got annoyed with some of the generalisations on this thread about Millwall fans because I have to deal with these stereotypes all of the time and I do feel that those stereotypes need challenging. If DB had supported another team, I doubt it would have been mentioned by anyone.

RedDogsBeg · 09/05/2019 19:40

He knew exactly which Royal couple were having a baby as proven by the tweet linked by Noeuf earlier in this thread were the day before he posted a comment on possible names for the baby and included with the comment was a picture of Harry and Meghan. He's lying.

noodlenosefraggle · 09/05/2019 19:41

It's relevant in the context of v his age though. He's 60 and a lifelong Millwall fan. They have done a he'll n of a lot in the past 20 or so years to repair their image and were instrumental in the kick racism out of football stuff, but that was precisely because it was so bad before that. He would have sat at Millwall throughout his 20's in the 70s and 80s and listened to monkey chants, and also sat through the numerous campaigns that Millwall did to stamp it out, yet he forgot all that?
