I honestly think it would be a huge surprise if anyone didn't know which royal couple had a baby this week.

But a broadcaster? Absolute bullshit that he didn't know. Proper, outright, insulting intelligence bullshit.

And re Alan Sugar comparisons, surely that's the same logic as saying someone who commits a heinous violent offence shouldn't be sent to prison because someone else who committed the same offence wasn't sentenced to prison and got away with the same crime? Wrong wrong wrong.

NoTheresa · 09/05/2019 15:18

There appears to be some confusion. He HAS been sacked and rightly so.

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2019 15:18

People saying he is ignorant or stupid-he really, really isn’t!

Sofagirl · 09/05/2019 15:19

Incredibly nasty and racist through and through

Glad he got the boot!

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2019 15:20

People saying he is ignorant or stupid-he really, really isn’t!

Cool. Which leaves openly racist then?

RosaWaiting · 09/05/2019 15:21

Bertrand okay then, he's just racist.

MauritiusNextTime · 09/05/2019 15:22

I know this is possibly ott but with the lack of awareness, lack of inhibition and manic behaviour I'd get checked out if I were him.

Of course he may well just be a racist who doesn't care who he offends but lots of people who know him are saying it's out of character.

cushioncovers · 09/05/2019 15:23

Yeah I don't think that he's stupid or ignorant. He's clever and sharp enough when it suits him.
What he probably has is a sense of grandeur that comes with being in a position of privilege and affluence for many years. He made a monumental mistake under the illusion he was being edgy and cool. He fucked up. IMO

RedDogsBeg · 09/05/2019 15:23

That's the best he could come up with? Utterly pathetic. He worked for the BBC who broadcast the NEWS across all their programming and he claims he was unaware of a story that has featured heavily for the last nine months and with increasing attention paid to it over the last week.

He's not seen a paper nor read online anything about Meghan's impending birth?

Stop lying, Danny.

People have described him as intelligent and media savvy, really? This is hardly the definition of either of those terms.

happyhillock · 09/05/2019 15:26

Danny Baker has never been a nice man, he's a first class idiot and a racist, bye bye Danny you won't be missedSmile

sam221 · 09/05/2019 15:27

Glad he has lost his job, he was utterly blatant and unrepentant about his racism. What a horrible little minded man!

SouthWestmom · 09/05/2019 15:28

When was the offensive tweet? This was two days ago

To think Radio 5 host Danny Baker cannot stay at the BBC?
Acis · 09/05/2019 15:28

It really is very bizarre. He is saying he was aware of the "circus" around the forthcoming birth, he was aware of the birth, he took trouble to go looking for a suitable photo to make a joke about it, but he had no idea who the parents were? How could he possibly think that's even remotely credible?

Bubblegumicecream · 09/05/2019 15:28

If I was any form of celebrity I would avoid ever mentioning any primates in conversation/social media etc. Whether innocent or otherwise it's bound to get linked to racism.

I remember a newspaper columnist recently called premier league footballer Ross Barkley a gorilla, referencing the fact he's well built in stature and strong so can hold the ball up well. He looks Caucasian but turns out one of his grandfathers is African so the comment was taken to be racist. Doesn't matter the context of the article - he said gorilla and somewhere in that persons heritage is a black person so = racist.

Acis · 09/05/2019 15:31

Cross post then - that tweet Noeuf has posted simply proves he's lying. So far as I can see, the offensive tweet was on 8th May. whereas the one directly referring to Harry and Meghan was 7th May.

findingmyfeet12 · 09/05/2019 15:32

Comments about primates are not "taken to be racist". In the context of likening then to someone with black heritage they are objectively racist given the history of that type of racism.

Lack of intention doesn't make the comments not racist.

peachgreen · 09/05/2019 15:34

@judashascomeintosomemoney You're right and I'm sorry. My instinct was to hope that someone whose politics I respect in other circumstances hadn't made an out and out racist joke deliberately but I was wrong to do so. It was racist, plain and simple, and his reaction has been appalling. There's no excuse.

floribunda18 · 09/05/2019 15:34

He was known for heavy drinking in the past, I wonder if this is a factor now. Some of his comments don't exactly sound like they came from a sober individual.

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 15:38

Noeuf but they could be any royals. How on earth is the average person meant to know what the Duke and duchess of Sussex look like? ;)

KingHenrysCodpiece · 09/05/2019 15:39

So he posted very dubious 'humour' which was clearly targeted at M with the Wallis connotation but between yesterday and today had a case of acute transitory Alzheimers?

I see. Happens to everyone.

@findingmyfeet12

Lack of intention doesn't make the comments not racist.

Absolutely right and perfectly put.

If a broadcaster was to say a woman's place is in the kitchen because that's what their family taught them and they genuinely believe all women are happy with that lifestyle etc wouldn't anyone be in the right to tell them it's an archaic outdated view and educate them about women's rights? Even if no malice was meant, of course they should be challenged on their statement.

I don't understand how people can defend him, especially after his flippant, self serving and victim playing response.

Bubblegumicecream · 09/05/2019 15:40

My local chip shop sells authentic Italian vanilla ice cream and ever since I was a child we always asked for an ice cream with a flake and monkey blood (the red raspberry sauce). Do this day I don't know why everyone in the town calls it monkey blood and have never thought to ask. I took my nephew for an ice cream a few months back and there was a black couple in front of us in the cue. I asked the nephew if he wanted red sauce and a flake as was paranoid of using the phrase monkey blood.

Does anyone else call ice cream sauce monkey blood? (*goes off topic)

KingHenrysCodpiece · 09/05/2019 15:44

Not that I know. Is the flake the 'monkey' and the sauce the blood?

This would not bother me personally, there's chunky monkey ice cream, and its not refering to anyone. If you are buying one for a person or child of colour it might be different.
