I honestly don't understand how anyone could have thought that was acceptable.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/05/2019 13:24

The rest of your paragraph didn’t mean anything. Oh! OK Then! You win the internet for today! Enjoy it! or tomorrow it will belong to someone else and their outrage for the day!

Bouledeneige · 09/05/2019 13:24

For a man who is a football fan, I cannot believe he was unaware of the connotations. What noises do the black football players have to endure from racist fans?

He should just fuck off with his excuses and 'diseased mind' defence. Its offensive and the BBC were right to sack him.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 09/05/2019 13:25

I don’t want to share this society where there’s a complete lack of understanding or forgiveness. I totally reject it. So many of you are wrong. You just are. We can’t carry on like this

Neither do many people of colour want to live in a world we're they are left feeling responsible to keep turning the other cheek, keep being understanding.

You have no idea, none whats-so-ever. After a while you start to doing a sort automatic assessment, 'did he/she really mean to say xyz? Perhaps he/she/they didn't realise,.....maybe there was some mitigating factor, he/she is from 'that time' so can't be expected to change, surely this very educated doctor/professor/laywer can't purposely be so ignorant...I'll just look over it and keep smiling.

Live with it long enough then it becomes a 2nd guessing game 'Perhaps it's me, perhaps I'm reading too much into it, its probably not because I'm the only person with dark skin in the room, I'm being too sensitive, he/she is smiling with me now, how could I have thought so badly of him/her, how horrible of me'

Turn on the news....A shooter just opened fire in a black church...you see the family saying its in the Lords hands, we must be forgiving we must stop the circle continuing...."

You know, after a while it takes it toll. Rather than asking where the forgiveness is, ask why can't people with more melanin be treated with equal respect. We're not a sub species, we're human.

Why aren't you asking why DB finds it just soo hard to make an unreserved apology and facilitate this 'forgiveness'?

Why on MN do people assume one is “outraged” when having a discussion? It is alright on a forum for people to discuss your points.

NoSauce · 09/05/2019 13:25

IF and it’s a ginormous if, he posted this NOT to be racist, his apology would have been much more sincere. He’d have been mortified and his apology would have shown this. It didn’t. It wasn’t even an apology as such anyway. I’ve no idea what he was thinking but I don’t believe this was a “joke”.

Calloway · 09/05/2019 13:26

Farage is a big old racist and he's appearing on QT again this week. Nothing like a bit of consistency from the BBC...

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 13:26

"Megan's so-called "race" "
Really?!

NoSauce · 09/05/2019 13:27

CuriousaboutSamphire blimey you’re doing yourself no favours here. Maybe reflect on this thread and what’s been said then slope off.

ShatnersWig · 09/05/2019 13:27

Why didn't the BBC sack Alan Sugar from The Apprentice for a racist tweet about the Togo Football team last year or the year before?

Genuinely, I'm not defending Danny Baker, but what's the difference here? Are the BBC saying it's OK to be racist to SOME people but not the Royal Family (and let's not forget Archie's grandad has been known to make some pretty racist remarks and Archie's dad thought it was OK to go to a party dressed as a Nazi)?

Should Baker have been sacked? Yes. But why not others who have committed similar offences?

FreshAprilStart · 09/05/2019 13:29

I found this so upsetting, more so than recent nasty stuff. It's just so out there awful.

Hideous man. Absolutely hideous.

PortiaCastis · 09/05/2019 13:30

The man tweeted something racist and disgusting he has got his come uppance for being a showboating low idiot
That's it

justarandomtricycle · 09/05/2019 13:30

I'm not so sure his apology would necessarily be more sincere or that he wouldn't have told people to eff off

Sometimes people are angry when accused of malign intent they categorically do not have. More usually it's embarrassment, and "protesting too much" can be dodgy but yeah, some people are furious and let you know it because they feel their anger is righteous.

I'd be much more inclined to believe it of DB because it seems consistent with his personality. None of us knows really.

Either way you can't work at the BBC and not be PC, that's an incident waiting to happen.

NoSauce · 09/05/2019 13:31

My mind wouldn't have gone there to be frank, I hadn't noticed Megan's so-called "race" until people started harping on about it

What do you mean by Meghan’s “so called race”?

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 13:32

Clearly she's lying!

RosaWaiting · 09/05/2019 13:33

those saying they found it upsetting

so did I. It's always a gut punch to see something like this and wonder how it will translate into real life racism.

I also think Sugar should have been sacked for that Tweet - I was horrified that passed with barely any comment.

NoSauce · 09/05/2019 13:34

justarandomtricycle why would he be angry? Surely if someone calls you out for being racist when you aren’t you are horrified and apologise profusely?

Afrikan · 09/05/2019 13:35

"My mind wouldn't have gone there to be frank, I hadn't noticed Megan's so-called "race" until people started harping on about it"

'So called race'

White people are exhausting with this reductive talk.

This "not obvious black" reminds of the apartheid scale. The lighter you are, the less visible hate, the darker you are......

Pathetic stupid

SaveThePangolin · 09/05/2019 13:35

Even the phrase 'politically correct' just seems wrong now. Why is it such a problem to treat people decently? Don't be racist. Don't be sexist, etc. Surely that's the kind of society we want to live in?

derxa · 09/05/2019 13:36

Togo?

Afrikan · 09/05/2019 13:37

"I don’t want to share this society where there’s a complete lack of understanding or forgiveness. I totally reject it. So many of you are wrong. You just are. We can’t carry on like that"

Yeah preach forgiveness to us, the constantly persecuted. My son gets racist chants on the football pitch. He will get the stereotype judging. But yeah, let's forgive. Shite

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2019 13:37

I also think Sugar should have been sacked for that Tweet - I was horrified that passed with barely any comment

I agree. But if this is the line in the stand and a new precedent has been created as to tolerance of racism then I don’t see that - out of the whole sorry incident - as a negative.

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2019 13:37

*line in the sand

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/05/2019 13:37

blimey you’re doing yourself no favours here. Maybe reflect on this thread and what’s been said then slope off. Why? If you can explain why in decrying racism and yet seeing a class aspect to a tweet I am being at all outrageous, racist, ignorant then I will delete myself from MN altogether and leave you to an ever shrinking forum of ever more insular opinions.

I SAW the racism.

I UNDERSTAND the roots of it

I also SAW a CLASS insult

I have no previous expectation of DB being racist, quite the opposite.

Yet I DO see the tweet as racist and he should have known better, though twice

So what, other than a determined effort to misunderstand, misconstrue what I have posted, have I got to reflect on?

Alsohuman · 09/05/2019 13:38

Does Sugar actually work for the BBC? I thought they bought The Apprentice from a production company.

Farage is a completely different kettle of fish, as the leader of a political party that looks like storming the EU elections, there’s sadly no option but to give him air time.
