Grandparents gave 5 month old weekabix drink!!!

Ok so I know it was a silly error on there part, but I am fuming. Left 5 month old with them for an hour and said if baby gets hungry grab a bottle of formula from the shelf! Came back and was preparing the evening bottle and could not find the expected bottle of opened formula in the fridge.... found the actual baby bottle and noticed the formula was brown but at time assumed it was because they had left the formula in the baby bottle in a fridge for longer than an hour.. (not slept in 5 months before you judge) I told them any formula in baby bottle needs throwing out immediately

Just come down from settling baby, asked again where the opened bottle of formula was and that’s when I spotted the weetabix drink in the fridge opened... looked at it and saw it was the same brown colour as what had been in the bottle!!!

Just went absolutely mental!! Apparently she did not take much if any.

They are not English but can read English so would have assumed they would have picked up one of the clearly marked 20 bottles of formula up and not the one bottle of bloody weetabix drink!

Have also scolded said husband for leaving this bloody drink on the side when he doesn’t even like it!!

Feel a little bad now as they are so lovely and I know it was a silly accident.. but what the hell!

There is also a funny story about them making chicken with kipper sauce...

It was a mistake, it's not like they gave it to him as a treat or because milk want filling enough or any other such nonsense.

Bearfrills · 08/05/2019 19:57

I'd chalk up to a mistake on their part. To be fair to them, the bottle shape and design isn't all that different to the bottle shape of ready-made formula so it's possible they didn't realise they were giving her something unsuitable.

rosamacrose · 08/05/2019 19:58

No harm done.
What's the story about chicken and kippers though?
That sounds fun 🤑

Fucket · 08/05/2019 19:58

In the grand scheme of things, your baby is 5 months old and not say 5 weeks old. Unless your baby has any allergies I’m sure he will be ok.

whywhywhy6 · 08/05/2019 19:58

If your baby is 5 months old I doubt it will matter. It’s ok. No harm done.

Maybe a quiet apology for your reaction is in order?

AdaColeman · 08/05/2019 19:59

How does Baby seem?

Kazzz65 · 08/05/2019 20:03

Sure he will be fine, we used to wean babies at 3 months old years ago.

Veterinari · 08/05/2019 20:05

I think you’ve massively overreacted.

Your PIL made a genuine mistake in a foreign language. How on earth does you ‘going mental’ and ‘fuming’ Help exactly?
Your baby is a couple of weeks off the official weaning age - many people will supplement with some foods earlier than 6 months anyway.

What exactly are you fuming at?

I think you owe your PIL a massive apology

Littlebird88 · 08/05/2019 20:05

ah they will feel awful about it. don t give them a hard time.
my 2 eldest the guidelines for wearing were 3 to 4 months. they had both had weetabix well before 5 months. helps them sleep through!

CaptainCabinets · 08/05/2019 20:07

I think you say “thank you for looking after DS, sorry for getting cross earlier but I was just worried.”

He’s five months, not five days so there’s no need for hysterics.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/05/2019 20:07

We were weaning at 4 months. You’re over reacting.

waltersdog · 08/05/2019 20:09

My teens were both weaned at 16 weeks as was the norm then. You're overreacting

Gordanismykitchendreams · 08/05/2019 20:09

Yes I probably did over react.. my temper is terrible at the moment due to lack of sleep. I did apologise and said I overreacted.

They really are the best grandparents and baby seems fine.
It will be one of those funny stories I laugh about when I have actually slept like the time they fed us chicken with kipper sauce.

We had gone to dinner and they had cooked a recipe they said they had got from the hairy bikers on TV. When they told us what we were about to eat we were saying no way was chicken and kippers a thing let alone a recipe from the hairy bikers!! Ended up tweeting the hairy bikers to ask them if they’ve ever done a chicken and kippers recipe... turns out it should have been chicken and capers!!!

Never laughed so hard in my life... and yes it tastes revolting!

CaptainCabinets · 08/05/2019 20:13

Also chicken and kippers Grin that’s made me belly laugh! My MIL once produced a roasted pepper stuffed with spam, balanced on a pile of plain spaghetti. 😳

Her0utdoors · 08/05/2019 20:14

Yes, babies used to be weaned earlier than now. They aren't anymore because the evidence showed it's harmful. They were careless OP, I hope they will take better care of your child in future and this isn't indicative of a lack of regard for you as a mother.

tor8181 · 08/05/2019 20:20

at 5 months my baby was eating 2 milky weetabix
every day as he was a big baby and very hungry(at 5 months i say the size of 11/12 month old weight and height)so i weaned early as he was constantly hungry

each baby is different and you dont have to go by the 6 month guidelines for weening

Libbylove2015 · 08/05/2019 20:21

Hey, don't beat yourself up for overreacting - even one night's sleep deprivation can turn the most reasonable person usually into a Donald Trump. They'll look back and laugh.

FascinatingCarrot · 08/05/2019 20:25

Chicken and kipper sauce Grin

Dont beat yourself up, they'll understand. My sister would go batshit too and we'd all understand it's with bone crushing exhaustion and temporary loss of most mental faculties [so far, 4 months in Grin )

Netflixandchilll · 08/05/2019 20:25

No need to kick of at DP Confused

slipperywhensparticus · 08/05/2019 20:26

My 6 year old has had this it came out the rear surprisingly fast so be warned 👍

NaturalBornWoman · 08/05/2019 20:27

He'll be grand. In the olden days when mine were little they were having weetabix for breakfast by that age.

Gordanismykitchendreams · 08/05/2019 20:29

I actually had started her on baby rice today, well I guess the weetabix drink has a lot more flavour to it!

@herOutdoors
Definitely a mistake on there part.. they really dote on the children and took care of my older one very capably for a year when helping with childcare.

When ds1 was a newborn dh Friend, wife and mum came to visit ,his mum told a story how she used to give dh friend baby rice as a new born in a bottle and made the teat bigger as he was a hungry baby Shockthis was in the 70,whilst I wouldn't advocate this, in the great scheme of things a tiny bit of a weetabix drink at five months in comparison won't do much harm .

DontFundHate · 08/05/2019 20:29

Yanbu. I would be very upset too. they should have called you if they weren't sure.
