It's not like you all have not been wondering

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 08/05/2019 19:42

But it is not a real name. It is a diminutive.

But loads of names are diminutive in origin and become names in their own right. I don't get the whole, 'well we call him Max, but obviously his real name is Maximillian'.....

missclimpson · 08/05/2019 19:43

Mountbatten-Windsor is used for male descendants of Prince Philip who don't have titles.

noodlenosefraggle · 08/05/2019 19:43

I think they have thought he's 7th in line to the throne now, by the time hes older, Charles will have slimmed down the monarchy as he has said he intends to do, to the monarch, the heir and their family. That will leave Archie to make his own way in the world. It will be much easier for him to do that as Archie Harrison. He'll have enough money that he could be called Tyler and he wouldnt be chavvy!

user1474894224 · 08/05/2019 19:45

I have an 11 year old Archie. It's a great name. It's got more and more popular since I chose it. - I honestly selected it as an alternative for Alfie and also because we toyed with Albi as grandad is called Albert....but settled on Archie.

(Fyi I'm definitely middle class and not from a sink estate!)

Leelaseye · 08/05/2019 19:46

Not keen on the name Archie myself but think it's one that's found in all social classes.
Don't think it flows very well with Harrison as a middle name

user1486131602 · 08/05/2019 19:48

Their baby, their choice.
Was wondering if Harrison was a nod to Harry?

She seems besotted by Harry, and he is beyond happy so, good luck to them x

Peaches100 · 08/05/2019 19:49

My point was that it's not very posh and if you're royal then you're supposed to be bloody posh!

Sorry it's not posh enough for you? Should they have gone with a mumsnet favourite Atticus, Ottolie or Hugo maybe? Surely that is just the middle classes trying to be posh? Grin

Archie is just fine!

Parker231 · 08/05/2019 19:49

Princess Anne’s grandchildren all have non traditional Royal names so no reason why this baby has to.

lozengeoflove · 08/05/2019 19:50

Thank you, miss.
However, as Archie is seventh in line for the throne, I presume he could hypothetically one day have a title? Or do you mean he is without title now as his parents chose that he should not have a title?
Also, by title do you mean Prince? Is Lord a title too?

missclimpson · 08/05/2019 19:53

It seems that they have decided that he won't have a title for the moment.

Up to WW1 the British RF were the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. It was changed to Windsor so as to distance the RF from their origins and their relatives in Imperial Germany.

Mountbatten-Windsor is the surname used since 1960 for male descendants who do not have a title.

This surname will be used by Master Archie because he will not have a title.

William and Harry both use Wales as their 'surname' because Charles is the Prince of Wales and because both are princes. Wales is a signifier of status rather than a surname per se.

feellikeanalien · 08/05/2019 19:55

Another Scot here who is quite surprised that Archie is regarded as common.

Anyway I think Archie is a lovely name and Harrison can be shortened to Harry. DD's best friend at school is Harrison and his mum quite often calls him Harry.

I can't actually believe I've just commented on a royal baby thread!

frumpety · 08/05/2019 19:56

Harry is the diminutive of Henry. So everyone who called their child Harry put Henry on the birth certificate ? Be awful common if they didn't Wink

GenevaMaybe · 08/05/2019 19:57

Well yes, I would expect all the people names Harry that I know to have been christened Henry.

petrasolano · 08/05/2019 19:58

Not sure if this has been said but the interview and name seemed like they were going the total opposite of what the royals 'should be'. Deliberately.

Usually it's the mother holding the baby smiling sweetly and the dad doing all the talking. The name would be ever so average without the surname. They defo knew what they were doing or were told to do it this way.

petrasolano · 08/05/2019 20:01

Also the name sounds very 'ok magazine'. Especially with Harrison. It's something a footballer would be more likely to do?! But that's ok!

Nothing wrong with the name. Just not what was expected from a kings brothers child.

Wauden · 08/05/2019 20:03

I do like the name.

Heratnumber7 · 08/05/2019 20:04

I hope the 6 people ahead of Archie in the line of succession don't all meet an untimely death..... King Archie the First. Grin

hazeyjane · 08/05/2019 20:05

Well yes, I would expect all the people names Harry that I know to have been christened Henry.

Thank god, otherwise people might assume they are criminals, footballers or..... Americans.

LoafofSellotape · 08/05/2019 20:06

Of all the names to choose from, absolutely awful. Real negative connotations with both

Why?Confused

I don't mind it at all. How you can be offended at a perfectly normal name like Archie,I'll never know!

orangejuiced · 08/05/2019 20:07

I really dislike the name, it isn't right for a royal.

I'm tired of this couple and all their playing to the cameras, why not just quit the royal family, move to LA, make their own way in the world and give us a break.

Bettyspants · 08/05/2019 20:08

Managed to read 3 pages and had to check I wasn't reading Mail on line comments. How ironic, get over yourselves.

You know you can give yourself a break by simply not posting. Terribly simple concept.

Parker231 · 08/05/2019 20:09

The baby isn’t a Prince or a Lord and his parents can give him any name they like - no different from you or I.

dementedma · 08/05/2019 20:09

Archie is quite posh in Scotland - upper middle at least - along with Hamish, Angus, Ruiaridh etc
