you know, the lunatic thing

I reckon it's bollocks. There's only one night of full moon a month (occasionally 2, like a 5 weekend month, like next month). But along the way, the moon can often appear full-ish, so perhaps people assume it's a full moon - and it's always more fun to attribute weird events to a full moon, rather than say "oh it's not a full moon till Tuesday, this is just a new moon".
It moves the tides around, and is sometimes nearer/'bigger', but a full moon is just catching more sunlight - just because less of it is in shadow, I can't see how it would affect people more.

In an old job (purchasing & logistics) I used to have a fancy moon cycle chart on the wall because you could bet that everything would go tits up on the full moon.

EmeraldShamrock · 08/05/2019 22:28

I am not superstitious, Yet I fully believe the moon affects my pms cycle, I am fairly regular but not as clock work as the moon, I also have PMDD, I noticed a pattern years ago, my worst most out if control crazy cycles are around the full moon.
I use it to keep myself in check, to remind myself, No DP hasn't turned ftom a lovely man to a twat in a week, it is the full moon helping you hate him.

Fiveredbricks · 08/05/2019 22:29

Ask any police officer. Especially the ones who work in the stations. One of my best friends is a custody sergeant and I can tell exactly how exhausted he'll be from work whenever we meet up, just by looking at the lunar calendar 🙈

MatthewBramble · 08/05/2019 22:32

This has been around since the 18th century. The original line was that there was more light for criminals to see what it was they were nicking, poaching, sheep stealing or whatever.

jazzytoes · 08/05/2019 22:33

I work in the police, I believe it to be true, and I don't believe in things like that!

Fiveredbricks · 08/05/2019 22:33

@Gth1234 you've made my day 😂

DrWhy · 08/05/2019 22:35

A friend of mine who’s a police officer is also convinced that they get more trouble on a full moon. I’m inclined to believe it’s confirmation bias though as it would be a dead easy study to chart the number of 999 calls / number of arrests / number of incidents in a psychiatric hospital and compare them to the lunar calendar. If it was true that would be known and published.

JustCallMeSliths · 08/05/2019 22:36

Police forces actually increase man power during full moons. It's not like the key factor or anything but it is taken into account.

It makes sense to me and my non-scientific mind. If the moon has that much of an impact on the earth's water to make tides etc and we're 70% water then of course it will affect us.

ASauvignonADay · 08/05/2019 22:38

Kids at school go bonkers when there's a full moon

Hecateh · 08/05/2019 22:41

Worked in a children's home. No odd days leave allowed at full moon. Always the days when kids were unpredictable.

Greeborising · 08/05/2019 22:43

Considering the human body is approximately 60% water
Look at what the moon does to tides............

CarolDanvers · 08/05/2019 22:46

I used to work with the police, the full moon thing is true, and they also used to like it when it rained heavily as less crime is committed when the weather is bad. My boss used to peer out the window and say happily “looks like PC Rain is on shift to night” Grin

Nickpan · 08/05/2019 22:47

I don't think thieves wait to operate when there's a full moon. It certainly would be easier for them to see, but also easier for them to be seen! And would they take cloudy full moon nights into account, or time their job for when the moon is high, rather than than scudding across the horizon. Also street lights blow that theory a bit

OP posts:
Haggisfish · 08/05/2019 22:49

It’s not that they wait. It is genuinely thought to affect hormone production and circadian rhythms. I am not woo at all but there is a reason it’s called lunacy!

Nickpan · 08/05/2019 22:49

"Considering the human body is approximately 60% water
Look at what the moon does to tides............"

But that's to do with it orbiting the Earth, and dragging the tides with it. Nowt to do with the angle of the sun being just right to light the whole of the facing surface.

My ex who is a copper says that they always have more trouble when it's a full moon. He also said rain is the best policeman as it was quieter when wet!

justasking111 · 08/05/2019 22:55

My police friends say this is true, worse if it happens at the weekend.

azulmariposa · 08/05/2019 22:58

www.phmd.pl/api/files/view/1953.pdf

This seems to suggest some changes in admissions to hospitals- so I think that it's probably true.

justasking111 · 08/05/2019 22:58

If you look at tidal timetables rise and fall in feet, you can see the effect a full moon has.

MaryShelley1818 · 08/05/2019 23:00

I have a lot of police friends and I work for Social Services, it’s definitely true in our experience.

SouthernComforts · 08/05/2019 23:04

I used to notice this when I worked in pubs!

MarjorieFrangipani · 08/05/2019 23:07

The children I work with are noticeably fruit-loops bonkers when it's a full moon, and if it's windy too, it's cwazy!

SrSteveOskowski · 08/05/2019 23:11

I think there's definitely something in it. A friend of mine works in a nursing home and she says she always knows when it's a full moon because the residents get very restless and out of sorts.
My cousin works in a creche and says that the kids turn into absolute nightmares when there's a full moon.

I had an ex years ago who couldn't quite get to grips with full moons and periods. He'd somehow got it into his head that everytime there's a full moon, every single woman in the world was having her period! Grin

FireFighter999 · 08/05/2019 23:23

Well in my line of work and that of my other Emergency Services Family, we do seem busier on Full Moons?!
