Another [former] night worker in cafes and clubs here. It’s definitely a thing, though we never did a scientific study so it could just have been confirmation bias. Very noticeable though.

HumphreyCobblers · 08/05/2019 13:13

Wasn't there a moon icon on MN at one time, due to the increased prevelence of bat shit behavior at the time of the full moon?

Deelish75 · 08/05/2019 13:22

I had this conversation with a primary school teacher once. She’d actually charted the children’s behaviour over an academic year and she said that the day before and after a full moon the children were a lot more hyped. Definitely think there’s something in it.

StoorieHoose · 08/05/2019 13:45

Yes humphreyCobblers MN did used to have a Full Moon indicator!!

dottiedodah · 08/05/2019 15:06

There is definitely an increase in anti social behaviour over a full moon . The electricity in the air is palpable. Also does anyone else notice that periods often start around this time ,and increase of going into labour as well?

floribunda18 · 08/05/2019 15:08

I don't see why there wouldn't be a link. We are made of bits of stars and water and we are hardly immune to gravity.

skybluee · 08/05/2019 15:27

the iron in our blood is from the stars apparently.

SilverySurfer · 08/05/2019 15:36

The gravitational pull of the moon is powerful enough to move oceans around the planet, it would be arrogant to think it had no effect on human beings.

‘A study of 18,000 psychiatric inpatient visits found no connection to lunar cycles’

I'm pretty sure that must of you are quoting an episode of Dawson's Creek at this point.

Kathandkim1 · 08/05/2019 15:47

Anecdotally, I would say there is more crime on a full moon, particularly if it's also a clear night. Less to do with moon cycles and more to do with increased visibility imo

Runningintothesunset · 08/05/2019 15:48

Our local psychiatric unit used to rota on an extra member of staff for the full moon. They’d still like to, but can’t afford it Sad

why1stheRumgon3 · 08/05/2019 15:49

Brian Cox said in an interview it wasn't a thing. That's interesting that people say their cycles coincide with full moons.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 08/05/2019 15:49

I have a friend who works for 911 dispatch. She dislikes shifts on a full moon. Always a massive increase in calls.

Gth1234 · 08/05/2019 16:01

it's brighter. Thieves can see what they are doing. And there will be more werewolves about.

Gth1234 · 08/05/2019 16:03

@why1stheRumgon3

Cycles. As in menstrual? The root of the word relates to the moon. It's a monthly cycle. It's bound to be linked.

Kiltartan · 08/05/2019 16:11

No studies have ever shown a link, and while I've heard the same kind of thing from MH nurses and cops, I tend to discount it as confirmation bias -- our brains tend to look for patterns, especially if we're trying to impose a sense of control on challenging events.

It's like menstrual syncing -- big recent studies show that the menstrual cycles of women who live together don't sync, but you'll still get people swearing blind it's true because of their house at boarding school.

Kiltartan · 08/05/2019 16:12

And there will be more werewolves about

Fair point.

iamaLeafontheWind · 08/05/2019 16:15

For those talking about gravity - the moon doesn’t get bigger when it’s full. There’s no change in the gravitational pull just because it’s got a different amount of light falling on it. How could that influence people?

ineedaknittedhat · 08/05/2019 16:19

When I was in care of the elderly their behaviour did used to change at the full moon.

YesQueen · 08/05/2019 16:21

10 years in the emergency services
You do not want a big event, nice weather, bank holiday, pay day and a full moon all in one go Grin

Rumbletum2 · 08/05/2019 16:25

It’s a myth apparently but you’ll still get people insisting it isn’t.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 08/05/2019 16:51

i'll tell you what-windy weather definitely makes kids mad. they're always much wilder when the wind is up!

MulticolourMophead · 08/05/2019 17:07

If there is any more crime at full moon, it'll be because a full moon is more light in the night to aid the crime.

KaleidoscopeEyes · 08/05/2019 17:12

I work as a taxi operator, and people are definitely more cunty when it's a full moon. I dread full moon overnight shifts.

My OH turns into a weirdo when it's a full moon too - he denies it, but it happens every time. He's preoccupied, quiet and a bit strange. Completely different than how he is the rest of the time.
