Abnormal smear

Hi everyone.

Just need some reassurance really. I had my smear result back as high grade (moderate) 26th of March. Went for a colposcopy on 30th of March. Due to just having a miscarriage they did not want to perform the LOOP, took a biopsy, the consultant said it was a small area of abnormalities, didn't look sinister but couldn't tell me that 100% as not allowed! He said my results would be back in 4-6 weeks but didn't really seem concerned, told me to go off and have fun on holiday and to not worry. They were all so lovely but they keep telling me not to worry and if there was anything bad he would of done the LOOP procedure straight away weather or not I had a miscarriage or not, told me I shouldn't be thinking of the C word and to not google or worry but I will properly need to come back for LOOP which I knew that anyway. But I'm so worried!! Can't stop thinking of the worse and was wondering if anyone can calm my nerves. I have some good days but mostly days where I'm worried.

A friend had that and they just monitor her more frequently now.

rodentattack · 07/05/2019 22:33

I just had the LETZ and was told that it's massively precautionary, that very few women will go on to develop cancer. I understand the nerves as I have been going through it! They will be keeping an eye on you, don't worry xx

KTara · 07/05/2019 22:36

I am sorry about your miscarriage Flowers

I had grade 2 CIN abnormality. They did not do the LOOP on my first visit just the biopsy. The loop procedure was about six weeks later. I got the all clear about a month after that but need a normal smear test in six months to check.

Honestly do not panic. The screening system is working as it should as they have picked up the abnormality. That is the main thing.

Ree91 · 07/05/2019 22:37

I've recently had the loop excision too, but mine was high grade severe. Just awaiting results too which can be 6 weeks 🤞 good luck for your results xx

charlou89 · 07/05/2019 22:58

Thankyou all so much for your replies. Means a lot Smile just can't help my nerves as I missed my last smear and just praying it's not the C word. I think cause he said it didn't look sinister but he can't tell me 100% started to make me panic, my mind now doing overtime.
Is it better that it's only a small area?
They were so relaxed and didn't seem at all concerned told me to go and have fun on holiday. Is this normal?
wish he had done the loop there and then to be honest. Xx

@KTara what was your smear results if you don't mind me asking were they the same as your biopsy results. Did they match? How long did you have to wait for your biopsy results? Xx

OP posts:
KTara · 07/05/2019 23:15

The smear and biopsy were the same, yes. He did the biopsy because it did not look like he expected from the smear result (it looked more moderate if I recall) so was not sure whether to proceed with the loop. But they were both the same.
I do not exactly remember the time frame for getting the results but it was six weeks from biopsy to loop and then another three weeks or so for the letter saying all clear.

charlou89 · 08/05/2019 09:35

@rodentattack did you have a biopsy first and did they mention anything to you when you first had your colposcopy xx

Thankyou @KTara for your reply just hope everything going to be ok. I'm glad your results were all clear hun xx

I had an abnormal smear, was called in for a colposcopy and told (I think!) that if the affected area looked easily accessible she would take a biopsy, which she did. A few weeks later I had the results, which said that the biopsy showed some concerning changes and that I needed to go back in for the LLETZ. Now waiting for the results of that. When I asked the nurse at the LLETZ appointment if the tissue she would be removing was cancerous, she said nooooooo, it is all a precautionary measure because a few women with those sorts of cells would go on to develop cancer and that the safest thing is to remove them. Sounds like in your case they decided that the risk is so low that it's not worth interfering with your post-MC cervix. I'm no expert but it sounds like they are being completely sincere when they say not to worry.

Also, I'm so sorry about your MC.

Triangled · 08/05/2019 11:22

I was diagnosed with CIN 2 but went for a 2nd opinion and was diagnosed with only mild dyskaryosis. Due to the initial CIN 2 diagnosis they did biopsies every 6 months for 6 years until I finally got a clear result. After lots of research I discovered that cell changes (even CIN2) can revert to normal within time, and very few cases lead to cancer. It's very reassuring. Most treatment (LOOP/LLETZ) is preventative....like removing moles just in case they ever become cancerous.

charlou89 · 08/05/2019 14:06

@Triangled I had a abnormal smear moderate. And when I went to the colposcopy they didn't say how abnormal it was just said it was small and it was abnormal but didn't look sinister. So I've gotta wait for results of my biopsy. They didn't tell me what they thought it was. Which is worrying me. And the fact he said it didn't look sinister but he can't tell me 100% xx

The waiting is horrible, and the worst part. I had high grade changes from a smear, had a colposcopy where they did the LLETZ there and then and I think it was about 4 weeks later I got the results and it was Stage 1a1 cancer BUT (as I am not intending to panic you) all they had to do was a second LLETZ (under a general this time as it was a bit awkward to get) and it had clear margins.

They can't tell you what stage the cells are until they are looked at under a microscope, sounds like it is a small area and nothing that they see as over concerning

Now I am 4 monthly smears for a year, then goes to annual.

charlou89 · 08/05/2019 15:46

@ItchyKondera I'm so glad ur ok tho after all that. That must of been horrible for you. The waiting is hard. My consultant told me it was a small area and nothing is going to change within the time I wait for the results. But now after your story I'm worried Sad

OP posts:
ItchyKondera · 08/05/2019 16:33

oh blimey I didn't want to worry you!! Sorry! Was trying to reassure you that it can all be sorted easily

Mine was high level changes, and even though it had a TINY bit of cancer, it was all sorted with a LOOP / LLETZ. So even though it was "bad" news, it was still sorted out easily and all was OK.

Only reason it had to be under a general was they couldn't get to the right bit under a local with ease. :) I was back at work 2 days later, no pain, no side affects, no more treatment

Ellabella989 · 08/05/2019 16:36

I had the loop treatment after they found a small patch of dodgy looking cells. I didn’t have it done until about 6 weeks after my biopsy was done as they didn’t feel it was particularly urgent. My next smear was normal 6 months later x

ItchyKondera · 08/05/2019 16:39

the waiting sucks
But sounds like the consultant was pretty happy there wasn't anything too worrisome - did you watch it on the screen? Could you see how much the dyes showed up?

It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be anything sinister - the odds show that, anything they do will be precautionary and you will just have to go back for another smear a bit sooner than usual

charlou89 · 08/05/2019 18:20

@ItchyKondera no I didn't look at the screen I properly would of passed out. He just said it was only a small patch and it was abnormal and that's when he said he couldn't see anything sinister but he couldn't be 100%. I just wish he would of done the loop regardless of me having had a miscarriage xx

OP posts:
charlou89 · 08/05/2019 18:21

@Ellabella989 what did your smear come back as before you went for your colposcopy hun xx

OP posts:
Ellabella989 · 08/05/2019 18:43

It was cin2 and when I went for the biopsy she said she could see a small patch of pre cancerous cells x

Apileofballyhoo · 09/05/2019 15:04

OP I've had CIN3, biopsies and several loops done over a period of about 10 years. With 2 pregnancies (one of which ended in miscarriage) during that time. I had more Letzs done because they didn't take enough off each time until the final one (as far as I understand). I've been clear now for three years.

I'm in Ireland and I was in two different hospitals for care due to house moves. Nobody was worried except myself. The cell changes are so slow. There was no panic about being pregnant and not having a colposcopy although I was due one. I was monitored very closely but that means every 6 months to a year. I think the first one was CIN3 but after that it was just abnormal smears for a while, then I think CIN2 and eventually came back clear after 2 more loops.

It's hard not to worry but really it's so so slow that you have nothing to worry about. Enjoy your holiday. If there was anything urgent you'd be told and a Letz would have been done there and then, miscarriage or not.

Honestly, don't worry.

charlou89 · 09/05/2019 18:25

@Apileofballyhoo Thankyou for your reply. I'm so sorry about your miscarriage. I know what mean by no one seemed worried only yourself. I've been in a panic last couple weeks and can't seem to remove it from my mind no matter what I do. So many people have different stories and it so nice to here other people stories.

Yes the nurse did say if he had seen something he would of done the LOOP regardless of the miscarriage which I suppose is comforting. Just can't help to still worry. I just pray everything ok xx

This time last year I was you. Abnormal smear went had biopsies. Few weeks later had loop came back cin3. Clear margins. Next smear all clear. No going back for 3 years. Not going to say don't panic as I know I hardly slept n thought of it constantly. I hadn't had smear in 5 years as missed last one. Will not miss another. Hope it goes well.

charlou89 · 09/05/2019 20:56

@TriciaH87 Thankyou for your comment. I know I can't stop worrying. So glad yours was ok. What was your smear result if you don't mind me asking before you went for biopsy. Xx

Apileofballyhoo · 10/05/2019 00:26

Honestly you don't need to worry at all x
