To be disappointed in hearing that many UK woman drink during pregnancy [shock]

Yesterday, I was on a thread when some of the women started questioning about US policy on drinking alcohol during pregnancies. One of the women had heard that if you have a glass of wine, you could be arrested. I assured her that wasn't true but there was chance that if you were visibly pregnant that the restaurant or bar might exercise their right to refuse service. And if a pediatrician became suspicious of drug or alcohol abuse, they could have the baby?s blood tested at birth. If the baby is found to have these in their blood, the child will be taken away. Another woman pitched that she found it disturbing that restaurants had signs warning pregnant women.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. These women seemed to believe it was actually okay to drink during their pregnancies. Hadn't they heard of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. So today, I did a little research and was shocked to learn that it is a big problem in the UK and that there is little education about it there.

Women who are angry over mothers choosing the bottle over nursing are damaging their children by drinking alcohol. This is not minor damage, in some case it is equivalent to severe mental retardation and in others it less obvious cognitive problems. Overall nearly 10% of babies born in the UK are suffering from some sort of cognitive problems directly related to alcohol exposure in the womb.

What broke my heart the most is that I have been on this site and I know that the mothers on this site care so much for their children. That while I may not always agree with everything said and our perspectives are not always the same, that we share a common love for our children. So I felt compelled to start this thread and share the information. I hope that you will share it, with your loved ones and it may spread.

I have attached some sites so you can research this yourself. These sites are both from the UK and the US.

BTW, I wonder where Leati stands on eating peanut butter and peanut products whilst pregnant...

ladylush · 18/07/2007 13:32

LL I sort of agree but do you really think that someone who has been that deceptive (or threatening as don't know which applies)and who has a public profile, should expect complete courtesy and honour from people she has insulted? I wouldn't exactly say that the gloves are off, but they're getting loose.

bobsmum · 18/07/2007 13:33

Smell the glove

She was fairly insulting to us IMO tbh. Definitely set herself up for a bit of a slating but I wouldn't start insulting her family - that's stooping down too low.

Her cut and paste antics reminded me of Fat Fighters lady when she gets stuck on 'dust, dust, dust, dust'

Kewcumber · 18/07/2007 13:35

I know - that Eleusis shuold be booted off asap.

But no-one has answered my question. You're not going to make me read the thread are you - I have work to do

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 13:36

don't think anyone read all her posts Kew, just lifted straight off the web so you can read the links when you have time - if you can be bothered!

lisad123 · 18/07/2007 13:37

I havent read all thread, but my understanding of FAS, is that you would have to be drinking regular during pregnancy and not just the odd glass of wine. Personally I had one drink on hioliday, and felt sick in morning so havent drank any achol since, but never was a big drinker anyway.

Lisa

francagoestohollywood · 18/07/2007 13:37

haven't read the whole thread either, but no, don't think you'd agree with her Kew. (btw did you see those great documentaries about Russia recently?)

bobsmum · 18/07/2007 13:38

Kew - Leati said basically if you have any alcohol during your pregnancy then your baby will be born with Foetal Alcohol Sydrome. This is a problem in the UK, but not in the US.

Although she didn't actually say that, she posted an inordinate number of Googled articles instead.

ladylush · 18/07/2007 13:38

I didn't insult her family - just noticed that he had what looks like a glass of wine in front of him. That makes him go up in my estimation, not down Her glass may have been edited out - ok I will slap my wrist Love your dust by the way

emj23 · 18/07/2007 13:39

I hope you don't think I was insulting her children or husband with my last post, I just found that Pink song and all the youtube stuff really irritating.

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 13:39

LL - you have eagle eyes!

ladylush · 18/07/2007 13:39

Oh yes, I am happy to stand by my condemnation of Pink and Kenny Rogers.

Kewcumber · 18/07/2007 13:40

Aha - so i don't agree then.

FAS a massive and serious problem and shouldn't be trivialised by screaming "FAS" at every woman who has a spritzer.

hellobello · 18/07/2007 13:41

I'm afraid I find some of Leati's posts really quite threatening and offensive. We all lead imperfect lives and really, alcohol in excess is only one of the reasons so many people a bit odd. I expect it is the 1% who are 'normal'. What of the pregnant women who have to take drugs of one sort or another to stay alive? Or the people who cannot for one reason or another, feed or look after themselves? There are too many reasons why we are so imperfect and surely we would all be better off just trying our best and getting on with it.

Kewcumber · 18/07/2007 13:41

franca - seen no documentaries about Russia recently (which hcannel) though even if I had very little would penetrate my brain at the moment. I'm more at a CSI kinda level just now

trolls are usually quite funny though - this one is just a dreadful , tedious bore.

zzzzzzzzzzzzz.........

ladylush · 18/07/2007 13:42

Did you see the pic Wisteria?

LittleLupin · 18/07/2007 13:42

Synopsis:

Leati - ah you poor ignorant Brits need educating about FAS. Here's some websites to look at.

Everyone else - actually Leati, there's plenty of research that says a glass of wine occasionally in moderation is OK.

L - no, you are wrong, read this

EE - er no, we still disagree

L - well British medics don't know as much

EE -

L -

EE - oh bog off

L - mwah ha ha! You have fallen into my trap! I was trying to prove you are all a bunch of pissheads and now I'm send this thread to NBC IMMEDIATELY!

(sort of )

Marina · 18/07/2007 13:43

I think a lot of well-informed people have wasted a great deal of time trying to engage in courteous debate with the OP. Like Kewcumber I lost the will to keep reading after the second lot of poorly formatted wodges of cut and pasted text.
Hardly a glowing endorsement of intellectual superiority through more virtuous living.

ladylush · 18/07/2007 13:43

I think it is vodka and tonic disguised as iced water. That is my preferred take on it.

francagoestohollywood · 18/07/2007 13:43

(Kew, my brain's totally gone, therefore can't rememeber the title of any of them. One was on More4, and possibly channel 4 more than a month ago. Parts of it was dedicated to alcoholism and declining birth rate)
