DIY noise bank holiday

namechangemyself · 06/05/2019 08:58

I know this has already been done, but want to ask this myself...

AIBU to be frustrated that my neighbours are having an extension done, and that they start very loud work at 8am every day. This includes every Sunday for the past 5 weeks, and they started at 7:50 this morning. Loud banging and drilling.

I understand that it has to be done, but why so early on a bank holiday? I wish they'd just wait until at least 9/10am! Are there rules around this?

WIBU to have a polite quiet word as looks like the work is going to be going on for quite some time?

On a weekday yes that’s fine. Weekends and bank holidays it’s after 9am and before 8pm on government website, I’ll try to post a link

Their drilling is so loud right now that me and my mum can't hear each other talk properly unless we shout. It's so loud.

Check your council's website - most stipulate that there should be no building work (having an extension built is NOT DIY) on Sundays or Bank Holidays and on Saturday it's usually 8am until 1pm. Have you tried talking to the neighbours about it? If you have and they're ignoring you, report to the council's Environmental Health. If you call the on-duty officer today, they might come round to investigate.

Night hours are 11pm-7am regardless of bank hols... sorry OP!
I’d go have a word saying your exhausted and would really appreciate at weekends they wait till 9ish?

BookwormMe2 · 06/05/2019 09:15

Seriously, check your council's rules then go round and tell them to pack up for the rest of the day or you'll report them.

BookwormMe2 · 06/05/2019 09:16

Pppppppp1234 That's for noise like parties. Construction work has its own set of rule.

BookwormMe2 · 06/05/2019 09:16

I mean rules.

namechangemyself · 06/05/2019 09:19

@Pppppppp1234 I'm in England and that's for NI

My neighbours building works went on for 4 years. She was an absolute CF cow who didn't care who she upset. I feel your pain.

namechangemyself · 06/05/2019 09:22

You're right pp not sure why I wrote DIY!

BookwormMe2 · 06/05/2019 09:22

OP, if you're in England just Google 'council noise building hours' and you'll see pretty much every council in the country lists the same hours I listed further up the thread. Noisy work outside those hours makes the builder and the neighbour liable for a £5,000 fine. We successfully kicked up a fuss ourselves about a neighbour's loft conversion because they wanted to come on Sundays - stand up to yours!

PamelaX · 06/05/2019 09:23

check your council, around here rules are:

I wouldn't hesitate to report them straight away to stop that antisocial nonsense.

I think if you dig deeper there are no actual laws on diy noise but most councils give a recommendation. Beyond that I think you have to go down a noise complaint to the council which you may or may not want to do.

I would have thought a nicely worded request is the best route.

floraloctopus · 06/05/2019 09:29

Last time this came up on AIBU the poster got their arse handed to them on a plate - pages and pages of how they were being very unreasonable! Don your tin hat OP.

namechangemyself · 06/05/2019 09:32

I'm not saying they shouldn't be working at all, just not at 7 something on a bank holiday. It's so loud that me and my mum can't have a conversation. They're obviously drilling directly in to the wall that attaches to our house. Not even kidding there are ripples in my cup of tea.

OP posts:
BookwormMe2 · 06/05/2019 09:33

namechangemyself Have you not spoken to your neighbour at all about the noise?

StrongTea · 06/05/2019 09:33

Our local council gives info about permitted working hours on the decision letter.

namechangemyself · 06/05/2019 09:34

@BookwormMe2 yes, the last bank holiday my mum had a polite word and they apologised and said they didn't even realise it was a bank holiday! (I live with my mum).

OP posts:
BookwormMe2 · 06/05/2019 09:35

floraloctopus Seriously?! How could anyone argue OP is unreasonable to complain about being disturbed by builders drilling and banging on an adjoining wall at 8am on a Bank Holiday?!!

ifonly4 · 06/05/2019 09:36

There seems to be regulations on what hours building works can be carried out. If it's general diy, if they don't do it now, it's be some other time in the day.

BookwormMe2 · 06/05/2019 09:36

namechangemyself Are they doing the work themselves or do they have builders in? Either way, you need to go round now and have a word.

floraloctopus · 06/05/2019 09:36

I can't remember the thread now but yes, it was a bun fight I think.

outvoid · 06/05/2019 09:37

I don’t think there’s anything you can do aside from a quick chat with the neighbours themselves. They are being selfish and hugely unreasonable.
