to ask how I can alert medical services without a phone

My mobile and landline are both out of commission - sod's law. A man is unconscious in front of my house, either drunk or on some sort of strong narcotic. Everywhere around is closed as I live among shops and its a bank holiday. What do I do?? I don't want him to die on my porch!!

I find it beyond odd that instead of going to look for help, you take the time to load MN, then AIBU, and then post...... when you could have helped this person.

Also depends on what you mean by 'out of commission'. I.e. restricted due to non payment of your bill, you can still dial 999. It'd be a huge coincidence if both your landline and mobile were not working due to a fault Hmm

Well that all happened very quick

iloveeverykindofcat1 · 06/05/2019 08:54

I know! When i dislocated my knee I was waiting an hour for help! (in a different city)

FamilyOfAliens · 06/05/2019 08:54

How did you take the photo?

SparklyMagpie · 06/05/2019 08:54

So you're in a phone? Even if the contract or whatever was cut off, you could still call 999

PunkRockHippy · 06/05/2019 08:55

To be fair, OP, posting on a chat site is about the weirdest way to call emergency services I’ve ever heard.

iloveeverykindofcat1 · 06/05/2019 08:55

with my laptop. I know, you can call 999 even when there's no signal. I'm getting a new phone tomorrow, mine is actually broken.

SparklyMagpie · 06/05/2019 08:58

X-post just noticed you'd said you'd used your laptop

SillyMoomin · 06/05/2019 09:01

Still weird to think “ooh I’ll post on mn”
Rather than find someone to help Hmm

OrangeJuiceandArmchairs · 06/05/2019 09:03

What a rollercoaster! Glad it’s sorted op

iloveeverykindofcat1 · 06/05/2019 09:04

yeah I suppose it is pretty weird. But I'm working away from home in a town I don't know, its a bank holiday, everything is closed, I don't have neighbours....don't know why I thought of it really. I suppose I've seen other people post emergencies here.

Don't mind old grumpy guts on here. They're all like briars this morning for some reason.

Boomsk · 06/05/2019 09:08

Did they manage to get him conscious?

stucknoue · 06/05/2019 09:09

If you have internet you can contact the emergency services!

BlueGlassesFrames · 06/05/2019 09:09

MN posters seem to have a wealth of knowledge of useful solutions others might not think of, and in the situation the OP describes many people don't immediately think of the simplest answer, no need to be such dicks about not believing her.

floraloctopus · 06/05/2019 09:10

With no landline or mobile how have you connected to the Internet?

rupple · 06/05/2019 09:10

You did just fine OP, he's lucky you saw him.

MyCatHogsTheBed · 06/05/2019 09:11

Of course emergency medics can and do get to the scene that quickly - I've had them turn up while I'm still on the phone to 999 reporting the incident!

They send on urgency (and availability) basis - so no, your dislocated knee is not as urgent as an unconscious, potentially not breathing casualty.

Sturmundcalm · 06/05/2019 09:14

well done OP - hope he's ok

Omzlas · 06/05/2019 09:20

@floral broadband connection is dependant on just a mobile connection or a dial tone. Virgin Media BB doesn't even use the telephone line for their BB.

It's still bloody random to post on MN rather than finding someone to help

opticaldelusion · 06/05/2019 09:26

FFS. When my DH had a heart attack in the street the ambulances (two) were there within a few minutes. Perhaps they thought it was more important than a sore knee Hmm

Sargass0 · 06/05/2019 09:26

4 minutes from someone calling an ambulance to them arriving is fantastic service. It might be one of those first responders that are parked up in different locations. Hope he's ok.

^This. Surely you could have started a thread afterwards saying, You never guess what happened to me this morning.
