To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

Yes! I’ve just walked 9,270 steps after a day’s work with my dog in the park, and will easily be over 10K steps by bedtime. I can’t imagine only walking 2,000 steps in a day!

pink412 · 07/05/2019 20:42

I’ve today hit a person record of 3700 steps.

Hoping to get to. Up to 4000 tomorrow and 5000 by the weekend trying to improve fitness

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 07/05/2019 20:48

Will people stop banging on about the Japanese guy!! We know this, it's also already been mentioned several times already

Rabbitmug · 07/05/2019 20:53

SheSaid god it's driving me bloody mad too every other poster mentioning him!

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 07/05/2019 21:02

Can people not just RTFT? Don't see the need for people repeating each other constantly

Booboo66 · 07/05/2019 21:10

I’ve usually done 10,000 by 9am at work. If not it’s around 5000 just from morning school runs. It’s certainly not a lot for me

LaurieFairyCake · 07/05/2019 21:12

What are you doing before 9am to hit 10,000 steps?

In order for me to do that I'd have to do a 90 minute dog walk

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 07/05/2019 21:16

I'm waiting for a "I do 10k steps in my sleep" comment. Seems to be the natural progression.

BalloonSlayer · 07/05/2019 21:27

This thread would be funny if it wasn't sad:

"How come you do only do 2000 a day??? I never leave the house and I never did less than 8000!" "I was bedridden and I got 2000."

Gawd!

Fitbit
Fitbit
FITBIT

THAT'S why you get 2000 steps for sitting down and scratching your arse. 1 scratch = 500 steps.

Drknittingfrog · 07/05/2019 21:30

@deadbod that's the thing...I think counters like Fitbit because they rely on arm movement pick up a lot of other movement and count them as "steps"... So inside the house but doing things like the dishes hanging the washing etc all "add up" even though no extra step is actually taken... This accounting how people including me clock 10000 without leaving the house. So for me I like to keep it in relation to my usual numbers...10000 is my minimum even though it might only amount to 5000 in real life...

Booboo66 · 07/05/2019 21:43

laurie I work in an equine hospital, it's quite large and by 9am I've potentially mucked out 10 + horses, done a bin round of the entire place and turned out and brought in teaching horses who's fields are a distance away and then done the vet rounds. I usually get my 10000 just before or during 9am rounds

3luckystars · 07/05/2019 21:58

This thread has been a real eye opener, I have upped my game! I did 10 000 steps before I got out of bed this morning.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/05/2019 21:58

I don't find it easy, TBH.

I have dogs, I walk a lot for work and to work, I exercise. I have days with over 20000 steps, but I don't always do 10000 a day.

I use the app on my phone to count.

3luckystars · 07/05/2019 22:06

Well I think 10000 is a LOT. I walked for the whole day long in Disneyland, 2 parks, and it was the only time I went over 10,000 steps.

I walked to the park with a pram and a dog for an hour on Sunday, and it was only 4000 steps.

I must be doing it wrong.

AppleKatie · 07/05/2019 22:11

You are- it will massively undercount if you are pushing a Pram.

Booboo66 · 07/05/2019 22:18

My watch and phone, that counts from my pocket, are usually the same unless I've been home and the phone has been left on a surface so I don't believe pushing a pram etc is an issue. I still get my steps in pushing wheelbarrows

ivykaty44 · 07/05/2019 22:19

3luckystars that’s just pathetic, do more before you go to bed 🛌

Sweetspinach · 07/05/2019 22:29

Fitbits are so popular be cause they tell people what they want to hear,ie, they've done thousands of steps when in reality they havent. They've simply been moving their arms a lot. Typing, cooking, whatever. Try it. Stand in one spot and move your arms. I guarantee anyone doing regu!ar very high steps wears a wrist tracker. I wear a clip on one and it's much more accurate, no arm movements logged at all.

evilharpy · 07/05/2019 22:45

My garmin crashed today and when it restarted it had somehow lost about 2,000 steps.

TheGoogleMum · 07/05/2019 22:57

10000 steps would be a lot for me, I would to have specifically gone on a walk to do that many rather than doing my usual daily activities

flyingspaghettimonster · 07/05/2019 23:29

Some days I probably don't break 200 steps total. I might actually be a sloth.

Penygirl · 07/05/2019 23:39

I aim for 10 000 a day but I have to work at it! A lazy Sunday might be only about 3 000. I don’t take the number of “steps” too seriously but I do think they are a good indication of how active I have been on any particular day and when I need to up my game. And yes, I have spent many an evening pacing from the front door to the back door to improve my score!

Rainsunshine · 07/05/2019 23:45

I usually hit about 1500 just around the house in the morning running around after the kids. I work in an office though and the days I don’t do the school run (5 mins each way) my steps struggle to get above 5k. I would consider myself to have had a lazy day if I’d done less than 3k

Catsinthecupboard · 08/05/2019 03:26

My dh works with someone whose spouse has many more steps everyday. To his great frustration.

It doesn't just count steps; moving your arm in certain ways counts as steps too.

Hmm
Wheresmyvagina · 08/05/2019 05:58

Some days I probably don't break 200 steps total. I might actually be a sloth.

That seems physiologically impossible to me. From my bed to my toilet and back is 40+.
