To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

For once, I completely agree with bertrand Grin

Sirzy · 07/05/2019 17:18

To manage 8000 steps without walking is actually pretty impressive Hmm

DirtyJohn · 07/05/2019 17:19

The 10,000 steps a day message was made up by a Japanese pedometer manufacturer....far better to have a 30 min brisk walk or a HIIT session.

AppleKatie · 07/05/2019 17:21

Me too 😉

I’ve just hit 10k for the day.

Today I have done 2 x school runs (10 mins each way- so 40mins)

1x supermarket shop

1x walk to the park 1km each way.

1x walk to a friends house 2mins walking each way!

1x Park And stride into a community centre because the car park was full (maybe 200m extra each way not a lot!)

And then general pottering/hoovering etc.

Fazackerley · 07/05/2019 17:25

I've done 8500 so far. That's a 45 min dog walk and 25 minutes walking to horses paddock and back. I'm likely to go back over to the horses and walk around a lot there so will do around 10k. I should be going for a run but don't have time today in which case I'd probably do around 12k ish

AppleKatie · 07/05/2019 17:28

Just checked the more detailed stats that’s 4.3miles of walking my watch thinks I’ve done today

AppleKatie · 07/05/2019 17:30

So that table upthread seems to tally more or less with my watch stats. I know that whenever I’m out with DH his Fitbit always reads higher than mine despite him having longer legs so taking less steps.

Tessabelle74 · 07/05/2019 17:33

I d 2000 around the house! I average around 12,000 a day

RiddleyW · 07/05/2019 17:35

Some people’s pedometers are massively over counting. It probably doesn’t really matter I guess if you’re comparing your own normal to your own active.

Drknittingfrog · 07/05/2019 17:36

Not read all the answers but it depends how you measure it... My Fitbit tells me I have done 10000 on days where I barely left the house ... And my house is not that big 🤷

sobby · 07/05/2019 17:36

It has been admitted that 10,000 steps were just plucked out of thin air.
I think it is a lot, I try and do it but it's not easy.

Okay if you are young and fit and have a job where you walk a lot.

Do what you can any is better then none.

Ellabella989 · 07/05/2019 17:38

My Fitbit will say I’ve done a few hundred steps when I do things like the dishes, blow dry my hair or even stroking the cat!

blackteasplease · 07/05/2019 17:40

I don't find 10000 to be alot. My average days included the school run and walk from station to and from work and i reach 10000 without trying. It's a mystery I'm always gaining weight if it's alot.

Mrsmadevans · 07/05/2019 17:43

I think it's a hellova lot and it takes me ages . I like walking but it is such a chore when it is all counted and then you feel bad for not getting to it .

caughtinanet · 07/05/2019 17:46

This thread is proving that most of the steps that are being counted can't be actual strides.

It's just physics that if you are actually walking you'd be covering a distance of around a mile per 2000 steps unless you're a toddler or a giant so saying you do 1000 before you get in the shower or whatever is rubbish.

I don't see the point of fooling yourself into thinking you're keeping fit by trusting a random figure, I haven't read every post but I've seen a few giving the obvious thing to measure - distance covered.

If you're actually moving outside at a reasonable pace you'll be getting benefit, don't kid yourself that walking round the kitchen is actually keeping you fit.

DeadBod · 07/05/2019 17:49

How on earth do people manage so many steps inside the house?
10k may be made up bollocks but if people make the effort to move when they are usually sat on thier arses, then surely that's a good thing?

DeadBod · 07/05/2019 17:50

As an aside, my friend stated that she'd done 20k+ by painting her fence Hmm

ooooohbetty · 07/05/2019 17:50

I live in a very small house. No stairs. I drive to work where I am tied to the phone for at least 8 hours. Half an hour for lunch and I often do 10 hour days. I hardly move. My steps are always less than 2000 on a normal day. Yesterday I went shopping for a few hours and it was still only just over 5000. I know it's very unhealthy and dangerous.

LJL1 · 07/05/2019 17:52

I do 3000 in the garden with a coffee in peace/fresh air before the rest of the family get up on week days, and take it from there. Part of my job involves reading a lot of cardiology journals. For the past few years a recurring theme has been 'sedentary is the new smoking', in terms of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The 10000 figure may be arbitrary, but the more the better seems to be the central message..

viccat · 07/05/2019 17:53

OP, I used to find it was a lot too when I used a Fitbit regularly to measure. I don't know why but I often specifically went for a brisk walk for half an hour to increase my step count and only just hit 6,000-7,000 for the day if that even when I did all my usual walking during the commute (public transport with changes) and so on (this was when my walk from home to the station alone was 15 minutes + another 10 minutes from the destination station to work). The days when I hit 10k+ would be days I was on the go all day.

LuvSmallDogs · 07/05/2019 17:57

10,000 steps is effortless as I have a dog and no car.

manicinsomniac · 07/05/2019 17:58

I don't find 10K is difficult for me exactly but I do have to be deliberate about it if that makes sense. So I wouldn't necessarily do 10K naturally, I have to go the long way roung/park in the furthest spot/walk up and down in front of the photocopier etc. I'm a teacher with activities most evenings and my week day average is about 1200. Weekends I am often still desperately pacing the house at 11.55 to hit 10K (I get VERY upset and panicky if I don't make it - pathetic, I know).

BUT I'm extremely short. So people who are saying you have to walk 7-8 miles to hit 15K - I don't! I recently went walking for an afternoon with another lady around my height (5ft 1) and a man who is 6ft 1. I do about 20000 steps in a 2 hour walk (which I'm guessing is 8 miles). The 6ft man did around 13000.

So the discrepanices could be height rather than inaccurate fitbits. I'm pretty sure mine is accurate because I do manual counting tests with it. It counts steps when my arms are folded or I'm carrying something. It doesn't count 'steps' when I'm sitting down waving. So I trust it.

It does have a tendency to occasionally count driving as exercise though (it thinks I'm doing 'outdoor bike').

YoYoYumYum · 07/05/2019 18:01

I do about 15k a day but that's cause I run and walk a lot - am based in London and have no car.

CalamityJune · 07/05/2019 18:04

On an average day (office job plus gym, driving commute) i'll average around 7000. I've adopted the dog walk from DH's area of responsibility to try and improve!

pollymere · 07/05/2019 18:05

According to my fit bit, I sometimes take three steps from my bedroom to the downstairs bathroom. It just doesn't pick them up. I walk about 5000 on an average day based on what it tells me.
