To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

Get some tunes on and walk on the spot it all counts you are still moving 7000 steps 45 minutes and the rest just gittering about all day it's doable x

@NotMyPuppy misinterpreted your post, I read it as 2 walks only. my kids were great for my stepcount - both rejected carseats, buggies, bouncers etc and would only settle in a sling while I was walking....
i haven’t been on a dedicated walk since maternity leave, but end up with about 14 000 steps a day. mainly by never using lifts, not using the car if i don’t absolutely have to etc

I do feel sorry for the OP, this was always going to be a perfect opportunity for the show offs to pile in and boast about doing 20 mile runs before dawn wasn't it Hmm

My fitbit seems fairly accurate- it registers roughly the same as my old pedometer. I think it depends how much you wave your arms, a friend who is a teacher gave up on hers as it measured when she was scribbling on the blackboard.

I wonder whether this depends on which arm you wear it on. On the day she where I am mostly sitting down at work, I’m using my hands a lot. It is adding steps, more than my previous tracker, but it isn’t adding thousands. I’d be surprised if it’s adding more than 100 steps an hour. But it is on my non-dominant arm and is set up correctly.

I have mine on what would be classed my dominant (and set up accordingly) as I write with that hand, but I lot of things I do with the other hand. So kind of ambidextrous can't write with both 😂

I just checked the day I had a severe migraine - 1400 steps pottering in the house a bit. I gained a fair bit of weight when I got a car, because a bad day driving to the office could leave me as low as 400.

My commute now is about 7k brisk walking, and then another 1500 to the gym. Or an extra 3000 can be done at lunchtime.

I'm on holiday now, and the average day comes in between 15-25k.

Why are people said to be 'boasting' if they say they do lots of steps a day?

Since when did bothering to exercise become something to be sneered at?

Just because some people choose to move more during each day doesn't make them big headed.

Fortunatelynot - some pp are not exercising as much as they think they are, is the point people are suggesting. Their trackers are so wildly out, giving the illusion that they are moving more than they are.

Perhaps for some people it is a disservice as they believe they are doing a lot of exercise - but really a sneeze has given 25 steps.

@fortunatelynot I think the issue is that some people on this thread appear to be taking delight in the big numbers, rather than engaging their brain and asking "is this a reasonable number"?

That's boasting. Someone who genuinely does a five mile walk every day is exercising, someone who walks 3 and a half miles while merely doing their gardening is either boasting, or has a garden with a circumference of several miles.

I have spent the afternoon gardening and 2 hours ironing and done only 4,000 steps in total. You can be busy but not do many steps. The only time I do 10,00- plus steps is when I actually go for a long walk.

This thread is hilarious. I’ve heard of vanity sizing in clothes but I’m now convinced vanity step counting is a thing too! The descriptions on here explain a lot to me about conversations I have had with work colleagues who do similar jobs to me about ‘just’ getting off the bus one stop earlier to push to the 10k steps or having a quick walk around the block. I’ve always been ? How can this be? I know my iPhone is pretty accurate as I check the actual distance of routes on google maps with what the phone measures and it tally’s pretty well. I find it hard to get 3k steps in a work day even with a lunchtime walk and working on a huge site where the ‘commute’ from car park to desk is 8 minutes each way. As a pp suggested, I do a hiit work out at home on 3k days to try improve my activity level.

Well i’ve not done a dog walk or anything but potter round at home and go to Sainsbury today and, not surprisingly, i’ve only done 2835 steps. I wish I had some people’s lives!

Same BertrandRussell. I went to work this morning but I drove, so carpark steps, same to my mum’s this afternoon, cleaned the kitchen, walked to the corner shop.
3,860 steps.

Went a long walk. Good for the mind as well as a healthy body. I try to walk every day. Now the nights are lighter I can go after work. Work days I only do 7000 max if I can’t walk at night too. Even when I had babies I walked the pram. I don’t understand why people can’t just get out the house and in the fresh air and walk?

Of course you do because no one is so lacking in critical thinking skills and imagination. Some people don't have time due to long commutes, are carers, have long work hours, live in rural areas with no pavements, live in part of Scotland where there's little daylight 6 months out of the year and they have to work days, have health problems, go to a gym and do some other form of exercise . . .

I do 20k on work days and 30k in days off.

Have cracked 40k on a handful of occassions.

Bamboo I really don’t understand!
My commute is a long drive. I live rural. I ferry kids about 5/7 days / evenings. I walk the woods etc. ( your comment no paths) If it’s dark at night I walk a loop round the housing estate in street lights. It’s about making the effort rather than lying on the sofa watching Corrie.

I can do around 23-27k a day when at work and about 2k on a day off as I need to rest my feet Smile

I do a lot of night time walking, but it's perfectly understandable that other women don't want to.

I don't go when it's very cold, or very wet, because I don't walk well on slippy ground, and I value not breaking my leg fairly highly.

Some people don't live in areas where "fresh air" is even a thing.

Some people just find walking incredibly boring. Which it is, really - I can't even do much thinking when walking, or I slow down to a less beneficial pace.

I didn't even think I was particularly active and I was so surprised to see I exceed 10,000 pretty much every day! Where did you read that 2000 was recommended? That sounds incredibly low?

SOrry, Bamboo. I agree with the PP - sounds like a litany of excuses. None of the things you list prevent people from being active. In the past, people lived with many of those constraints and yet were active.
