To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

@BertrandRussell I agree unless they're exercising before breakfast, but if they're not then I'd like to see what they're doing.

As for the comments people have made about waving their arms to make their steps higher, yes you can on most watches, but why bother? You're only cheating yourself then.

drspouse · 06/05/2019 12:46

I take off my fitbit to knit. However I have been sorting out the kids' clothes all morning and have done 4000 which seems accurate to me as my feet hurt!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/05/2019 12:50

I was out with the dogs, then have been tidying up, dusting, that sort of thing, and have barely managed 4 000.

Aragog · 06/05/2019 12:53

I think some people have very generous devices, or just move their arms around a lot!

This morning I have worn my watch since after my shower. I've been down stairs (hotel) to breakfast, and up again to sort bags, taken them to the car and then for a walk down by the sea front.

I've walked 3.24km that's registered at 4554 steps, and 10 minutes worth of 'exercise.'

Now in car but will be walking again in a while as off shopping for a bit. So we shall see.

IceRebel · 06/05/2019 12:57

It’s about 2,000 steps to my child’s school, so the school run is 8,000.

I've been awake since stupid O'clock this morning, so it might be me, but this doesn't make sense.

Surely the school run would be 4k? If it's 2k there logically it must be 2k back, where are the other 4k steps coming from? Confused

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 06/05/2019 12:59

@IceRebel guessing because she does it twice a day

IceRebel · 06/05/2019 13:00

Ah that would make sense. I might need an afternoon nap to get my brain working again. Grin

fancynancyclancy · 06/05/2019 13:03

But what doesn’t make sense is that poster said 2000 steps took her 10 minutes, so 3.6 steps a second?

Lellikelly26 · 06/05/2019 13:03

I have a 5k run each morning, that is around 5,600 steps, then I walk to work and back and get in around 13,000 steps on those days.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 06/05/2019 13:05

@fancynancyclancy I might have to do a 10 minute challenge and see how many I can get 😂

fancynancyclancy · 06/05/2019 13:07

do it, do it, do it!

MummytoCSJH · 06/05/2019 13:09

I did the same. I could do 2000 easily before 9am, raised my target to 5000 as was doing around 8000 a day. I now manage to do way over 10000 most days but I have made an effort to change where I can e.g. take stairs, set off earlier instead of getting a taxi, walk to pick up takeaway instead of deliveryGrin

Fazackerley · 06/05/2019 13:15

I've walked around and around a field and taken the dogs for a short walk and only done 4000. I'll need to walk to and from the ponies field and take the dogs for a long walk to get to 10000. Basically 10k steps a day means at least an hour walking. I don't count pottering around the supermarket.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 06/05/2019 13:17

It does help to be in a 4 floor house!

I bet it does!! I can give the tour of the house just from the hallway.Grin

I'm also lazy and I hate walking at the best of times(especially without a purpose/something at the end) so I'm quite happy with my (measly) 10k on work days.

Having a break now as I have a rash/burn from my FitBit, not just the bracelet but the actual thing. Strangely,I kinda miss it.

Fraxion · 06/05/2019 13:17

Another reason I gave up my Fitbit is having to wear it all the time. I hate wearing a watch or anything like that all the time. I generally only wear one at the weekend when we go out. The second we're home I take it (and my wedding rings) off. I never wear my rings about the house either.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 06/05/2019 13:29

@fancynancyclancy Fitbit didn't log it as an exercise for some reason but 997 steps and very intense. Excuse the rest of the day so far, it's been a lazy morning 😂

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
NameChangeNugget · 06/05/2019 13:47

It’s all relative.

Personally, if I’d done 2000 steps, it would’ve been a box set Sunday

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 06/05/2019 13:56

We did a 2 hour walk the other day which was about 5 miles and that was 10000 steps.
On an average day with the school run and back with constant pottering round the house I get to 10000 by about 5 p.m.
If you actually count in your head as you walk 10,000 is loads!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 06/05/2019 13:57

shesaidno it probably hasn’t logged it because it was only 10mins. There’s a minimum length you have to be exercising for before it will count. Mine’s set for 20mins but i’m not sure what the default setting is.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/05/2019 13:57

10000 steps takes either commitment or a lifestyle to support it

More than half the population don't do it - I'm guessing it's because that half get up in the morning, drive the kids to school, work 10 hours and then drive home again.

10000 steps is easier for me as I have no kids and can spend 90 minutes a day active enough to be walking.

It's very hard for the average person with an office job and family life to have 90 minutes to do that

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 06/05/2019 14:03

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay true, should have set it to record it rather than set the 10 minute timer. That left me a hot sweaty mess though so not sure how people are doing 2k in 10 minutes as claimed

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 06/05/2019 14:05

Having a job where you never sit down helps.

Although I do have to watch that I’m actually doing other exercise as well.

AppleKatie · 06/05/2019 14:11

Done my 2 mile walk, that came in at about 3500 steps, which makes the ‘2000’ I did pottering around the house seem unlikely at best

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 06/05/2019 14:13

It has to be to do with settings. My fitbit is much more generous than my UP band was, but I would struggle to get some of the step counts earlier in the thread on a work day where I’m desk based if I didn’t also do an extra walk.

2k in 10mins must be a very brisk walk.

Fazackerley · 06/05/2019 14:18

I work all day but go for a walk for 45 mins at lunchtime.
