To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

Go for 3 brisk 30 minutes walk each day and job done

Research has shown that 3 x 10 min brisk walks a day are more beneficial that 10,000 steps

RedForShort · 06/05/2019 08:21

*Phone doesn't register steps immediately (until about 10 in i think). If it didn't I imagine just standing up might register as steps, or even shifting to scratch you arse you've been sat on!!)

BuildBuildings · 06/05/2019 08:26

I knew this thread would be full of people saying it's not much. They do that in their sleep blah blah blah...

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/05/2019 08:32

So, yesterday I went to m and s food shopping. Not a big store, was in there 45 mins, probably about 10 standing at till, I did some housework but phone on desk, then I went to Sainsburys for an hour and 3quarters, but store, lots of walking. I then out shopping away, but of gardening, cooking, laundry in and out and upstairs putting away etc. Nipped out to wicke s later n evening. Total steps for the day, about 3500. Maybe add in a few hundred for the morning housework. I have my target set for 6k, I only meet it if I am deliberately going for a walk. During the week at work, I struggle to get 2k unless I go for a walk. I try to park further from the office but I don't have time for a walk at lunch.

Pinkarsedfly · 06/05/2019 08:46

Whether it’s a con or not, my Fitbit has definitely improved my fitness, and got me running.

SpreadsheetQueen · 06/05/2019 09:02

I probably do about 3000 if I'm working and make little effort to do anything else, but I try to go for a lunchtime walk so it's rarely actually that low. Most other days it's 10000 or over.

I do get close to 1000 before leaving the house in the morning, so I can see how that's realistic with a combination of lots of stairs and not being very organised. Down 2 flights of stairs to shower, back up to fetch forgotten towel, back down to actually shower, back up to get dressed. Down 2 to get breakfast, back up 2 to gather washing, down to put wash on, up 1 to rouse children, down to have breakfast. Garden also up steps so more to hang washing out and then a final run up and down gathering all the clothes/ books/ homework everyone has forgotten.

However I do think there is huge variation between different trackers, DS had a cheap and cheerful one and would find he was doing thousands of steps in the car, or typing. Mine only registers when I'm actually walking.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 06/05/2019 09:09

My phone records about 4k on work days. Which is fine as i only have it on me for school run/going to work ,break ,lunch and walk back. Fit bit i do about 7-8k and then have to push to get to 10k. Some days are busier and manage easily(especially if DD has an after school club and i walk home and then back to get her).

Weekends some days I don't even reach 1k on either unless we're out and about somewhere.

mrsgandy · 06/05/2019 09:10

@sharpkat fair play to you . That would certainly get your steps up . A 3 hour walk a day is phenomenal. I am happy to get 30 mins .

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 06/05/2019 09:13

Oh and I'm in a one bedroom flat, unless I start running around the livingroom like an idiot there's no way I'm getting 2k just going to the loo or whatever.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 06/05/2019 09:14

I do circa 400 steps to our school 5 mins away - both ways it’s around 800.

Natsku · 06/05/2019 09:20

I average 4k which is not good but considering that up until recently I wasn't able to walk for longer than ten minutes at a time without a lot of pain then I suppose it could be worse! The only times I've got 10k is when I've walk to town and back which is about 8km round trip - I have to do that today to go to physiotherapy so I'll at least get my steps in today.

8 year old DD on the other hand averages 12k

Natsku · 06/05/2019 09:22

Oh but I did get 12k one day when I put my activity watch to charge and I guess the cat must have been batting it because when I came back an hour later to put it back on it had racked up 12k steps!

Ithinkmycatisevil · 06/05/2019 09:38

I do around 15k a day during the week. I have an active non desk based job.

2k seems like very little to me.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 06/05/2019 10:05

I only reach 10,000 if I've spent all day walking. Admittedly I use my phone more often than not and because I don't carry it around when I'm doing housework, I am not counting all the walking. But even do, 10,000 is a full day's activity for me do I think it's quite a lot to get to if you don't have a long school run or have a desk based job or live close to the shops. You'd have to make a specific effort to hit the target rather than just doing it in the normal course of your day.

PocketFluff · 06/05/2019 10:08

Last Sunday! 😄

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
JinglingHellsBells · 06/05/2019 10:11

Please read my previous post and google the myth of the 10K steps.

This was a random figure dreamed up by the Japanese inventors of a pedometer.

Natsku · 06/05/2019 10:14

DD's steps on the day we put up the trampoline Grin

PJMasksAreOnTheirWay · 06/05/2019 10:14

I’m a nurse and did 18,000 steps yesterday (just checked!). That’s pretty good.

Ilove31415926535 · 06/05/2019 10:15

@ivykaty44 oh I missed that, thanks for the info. Might be time to retire my fitbit and rely solely on my Garmin!! Grin

MyOtherProfile · 06/05/2019 10:23

This is mindblowing. Our school run is 15 mins round trip and I get less than 2000 steps from that. If I potter around the house all day I would only get about 1000. Getting ready in the morning barely gets me to 500 steps and we have a pretty big house. I can only conclude some people take tiny fairy steps so it takes them so many more to get any where.

I actually struggle to hit 10k. I drive a lot for my job which means i don't get to walk much. I have to go for a walk in the evening to stand any chance of hitting 10k.

ginyogarepeat · 06/05/2019 10:29

2000 was never a recommended amount! 10k is, and isn't too difficult if you manage a few small walks a day, take stairs instead of lifts etc. On a day where I'm fairly sedentary I'd get around 8000. Good luck!

AVT5 · 06/05/2019 10:32

I average 12000 doing the nursery/school/local shop runs.

HappydaysArehere · 06/05/2019 10:35

I’ve got a Fitbit. I haven’t done anything but go to the loo since midnight last night as I laze in bed knowing I must get up, however it is registering 107 steps!

drspouse · 06/05/2019 10:37

I'm in a one bedroom flat
It does help to be in a 4 floor house!

MrsScamander · 06/05/2019 10:38

On a non-working day I usually do over 10,000 with the school run, going about the house and getting out the house with the baby. I don't drive though so walk most places.

Trying to lose weight so to build my fitness I've been aiming to walk over 15,000 steps every non-working day which for means I have to plan to walk somewhere further than I usually would.
