To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

10,000 isn't massive, but it is a good amount to do every day.

AnyoneButAnton · 05/05/2019 23:44

Here’s the Martin Lewis article.
blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2019/01/martin-lewis--i-averaged-23-513-steps-per-day--burning-3-600-cal/

Gth1234 · 05/05/2019 23:44

2000 steps would be about a mile. That's not far for a day

mouldyhousemouldylife · 05/05/2019 23:45

2000 sounds quite enough.

I don't know. It sounds nothing fitness wise. I do double that walking 20 minutes to town and back and don't feel or look like I've done much.

MrsPinkCock · 05/05/2019 23:46

Genuinely shocked you thought 2k was the recommended level of exercise! (Sorry OP)

I do 6kish on my laziest days (I’m talking duvet days) but I have a dog so they’re almost all spent on him. On heavier exercise days I do 20k. Most days are somewhere in between. I tend to get 10k without too much thought or effort though because dog.

@Duck90 I used to walk MILES on my restaurant shift! 3k seems so low!

clairemcnam · 05/05/2019 23:47

AnyonebutAnton It takes me longer than 10 minutes to do 1000 steps. 100 steps a minutes is quite fast.

Duck90 · 05/05/2019 23:48

Yes waitressing. You are right that will affect results.

NC4Now · 05/05/2019 23:50

I do 2,000 sitting on my arse all day. It’s just going to the loo and pottering steps.
10,000 requires a 30-40 minute walk, which is doable.
2k is sedentary really.

Minniemousejammies · 05/05/2019 23:51

Just checked and I’m getting less than 500 on work days. I have an office job and drive from door to door. I feel 10000 is loads.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 05/05/2019 23:52

I’ve just counted and to get from the living room via the kitchen to my bed is 75 steps.
This is a regular 3 bed semi, not a huge house.
I can easily see how someone can get to 1k getting ready for work.

clairemcnam · 05/05/2019 23:54

Nc4now 10,00 steps is nearly 5 miles. If you can walk 5 miles in 30-40 minutes fine. But that is unusually fast.

Veterinari · 05/05/2019 23:55

I average 8-9k with doing very little. I’m relatively sedentary with intermittent bursts of exercise. I would ‘smash’ 2k just by pottering in the house.

AnyoneButAnton · 06/05/2019 00:02

So if 10,000 is about 5 miles Claire then my (and pps’) rule of thumb of 1,000 steps per ten minutes works out at 3 miles an hour. Not slow but not unrealistically fast.

StinkyWizleteets · 06/05/2019 00:03

I find the step recording so odd and arbitrary. I deliberately walked 10km yesterday and it was just over 15,000 steps recorded on my phone (so possibly not too accurate but distance was so 🤷‍♀️) but going twice to school and back and a walk round the supermarket in a day gets me my 10,000 steps easily and none of those places are more than 500m from my house. It makes no sense to me at all. 2k is a day watching tv and barely moving.

I do have to wonder where these people doing daily 10k+ steps just running after kids are letting them loose...

kateandme · 06/05/2019 00:03

dont feel disheartened.and do NOT WALK AROUND your room to make it up.dangerous behavior.this is meant to be about getting your health and wellbeing better not doing behavior unhelpful to your mindset to make up some dam steps!
i dont know how helpful these counters are for some people.
just keep trying your best.use increasing ur fitness or exercise as the guide not the amount of steps to then bugger the efforts your making or not

clairemcnam · 06/05/2019 00:04

Yes realistic if going for a walk. But not if pottering about the house.

AnyoneButAnton · 06/05/2019 00:08

Yes, that’s why I said “purposive” walking.

Very common and depressing to spend five hours on your feet with the DC at a museum/exhibition/zoo etc, come home knackered and then find your step counter registered at 7,000 steps when it feels more like an 18,000 day.

fancynancyclancy · 06/05/2019 00:10

Ok I think I know where i’m going wrong as I like a nice relaxed stroll. Are most posters on this thread walking like this?

AlphaBites · 06/05/2019 00:41

That’s nice, good for you. Usually though people can’t randomly break out into a High School Musical number during the day to reach their steps.

Grin

On a lazy day three months ago I was going 1500 😳, I drive to work, drive to school for pick up then drive home. Walking /Cycling to work isn't an option as school and work are opposite directions from home. I've gradually added 500 on each time I was hitting my target and I felt absolute shit thinking I was good going for a walk to have clocked up 5000 steps when seeing 10000 was the minimum I had no spare time to get out.

Now I'm doing 6000 as a target and hitting it most days, at weekends I have hit 10 000 occasionally. My job is sedentary and I get a 15 min break so I go for a walk now 3x a week and eat my lunch later.

Those who drive to work and do school run (driving) how do you hit 10 000 a day?

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 06/05/2019 00:53

Just to add I've never seen HSM so no idea what I'd be doing to emulate that 😂😂

I do like dancing around though, it gets the heart rate up and can do it while the tea is cooking etc. Sometimes I set a time goal and see how many steps I can get in that time running on the spot/jumping etc, yes my teenage DCs think I've lost the plot but I really don't care

clairemcnam · 06/05/2019 00:56

Just read some research which says these things are pretty accurate if walking steadily at over 2 miles an hour, but pretty inaccurate if pottering about.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 06/05/2019 00:59

@clairemcnam mine actually often misses steps, I can walk to the bathroom and back and it's not changed at all, haven't noticed it go over though and I check it regularly

clairemcnam · 06/05/2019 01:00

That is annoying.

Caucho · 06/05/2019 01:03

You are either the laziest sloth in the world or whatever you’re using to count them doesn’t work. As people have said it’s very difficult to achieve less than 2,000 steps unless you’re bed bound. So in conclusion don’t worry. It’s probably just a crap phone or something

PippilottaLongstocking · 06/05/2019 01:08

According to my phone (which I don’t tend to carry on me when I’m in the house so only really counts steps when I’m out and about, we have a lot of stairs so I probably do a lot more than it says) My daily average is 7,450 but my maximum seems to be around 20,000 in a day. I do about 2,000 just doing the school run
