To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

I do 10,000 steps an hour.
So you walk 5 miles an hour?

Reading this thread I honestly think people are using inaccurate pedometers or tech. I can do 10,000 hours a day with a desk job, but I have to make a conscious effort to walk a lot.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 05/05/2019 22:38

Thing is we know the 10k thing is totally made up, it's still a good number to set as target though isn't it, got to pick a number anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

stealthbanana · 05/05/2019 22:40

Haha all these people saying they reach 5000 steps when home and hungover are making me feel better about not often getting to 10k as it’s clearly a load of bollocks and inaccurate

I used to walk just on 2.5 miles to work every day, desk job but lots of walking between offices etc, plus popping out for lunch etc. And then bus home. I would rarely get more than 7k steps.

My average would be about 4-5k. I don’t own a car, am out and about with kids every day or working. Live in a 4 story house so up and down stairs a fair bit. 🤷‍♀️

Teateaandmoretea · 05/05/2019 22:43

claire I think she was taking the piss Wink

NewSchoolNewName · 05/05/2019 22:43

I usually average around 9000 steps per day on my Fitbit.

But I know it overcounts. I drove for our Bank Holiday getaway on Friday, and my Fitbit started buzzing and doing the “whoo hoo! 10,000 steps!” thing it does when it’s counted up to 10,000.

Very unconvincing when I’ve been at the wheel driving for the last 90 minutes.

redbedheadd · 05/05/2019 22:45

When people say they hit 14-20,000 no problem... how many minutes are you walking for? I honestly don't get it!!

Before I had my baby and I was working in central London, on and off the tube, walking around the office, a mile to yoga, a mile back - I would get to 10/12,000 but they were really long busy days.

I walked for 240 minutes today on actual "walks" and ive just checked it's 14,000

I always thought I was quite an active person

bebeboeuf · 05/05/2019 22:47

This is my last few weeks. Very obvious to see my work days where I sit at a desk (although I go for a walk each lunchtime for around 40mins those days)
The rest of the week is just looking after toddler, visiting friends, running errands etc

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
whymewhyme · 05/05/2019 22:48

Today I have done 22,260 I woke up at 6, I cleaned the house, rode my horse and walked the dogs and in the process of doing a shift at work!

CherryPavlova · 05/05/2019 22:49

I don’t count steps. My husband does and does around 25 -30k daily.
I have to make an effort as my job is predominately sedentary. I do about 5 -6 miles walking a day with the dog plus incidental things.

Seymoursyourfriend · 05/05/2019 22:49

10,000 steps is roughly an hour and half walk. I do an hour and half dog walk every day and it comes out at around 10,000 steps on the Map My Walk app.

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2019 22:50

“then i do the quick 4 mile walk to town for light breakfast”

Grin “light” breakfast is an inspired touch. It’s like the “huge salad” people.

bebeboeuf · 05/05/2019 22:52

I used to have an Apple Watch which didn’t record steps correctly.

I could have been non stop all day but if I was holding onto my handbag, pushing a trolly, wheeling a suitcase or doing anything where I’m very active but my hand was still, it wouldn’t record any steps

I could walk 5 miles with the push chair and it think I’ve hardly moved

Macca84 · 05/05/2019 22:52

It sounds a lot, but you're probably not tracking all your steps. I've not been anywhere today (revising for an exam) but I've still done 2100 just around the house and a nip to the local shops. If I'm at work where there's a lot of walking between buildings I usually rack up close to 20k

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 05/05/2019 22:53

Tbf when I am at home and hangover I probably do 10k just from sofa to toilet when flushing it all out 😂

Anyone here can recommend an ankle or leg (like around a thigh under a skirt) step counter? I don't feel the arm ones can possibly be accurate

Duck90 · 05/05/2019 22:55

I think some fitbits are way too generous with their readings. I have been walking around the house and garden all day, and a short walk. My device has said I have only done 3500 all day. Okay, it’s not been strenuous walks, but an active day. Think I will invest in a Fitbit, or fling my arms about more.

YesQueen · 05/05/2019 22:56

I guess it depends on your job too. I can't move from my desk Grin so there's no walking to other offices/buildings etc. I can stand up but I can't move/walk around so my steps will be lower than someone who's running around between buildings

Tunnockswafer · 05/05/2019 22:58

I reach a far higher count on days I’m at home (work part time) than days I’m teaching. Making it up to 10,000 requires a decent walk in the evening, about 45 mins worth - I’m doing it as often as I can but if you’ve small children and maybe no one else to watch them while you walk, it’s wet or dark and dc don’t want to come on a random walk with you - it’s not always as easy as some make up.
Feeling smug today though as have done 19,000 but that’s because am on holiday - think having a dog may be the trick, the dog owners on here seem to walk a lot more.

peachgreen · 05/05/2019 23:01

Oh man, all the people on here with dodgy fitbits who genuinely think they're doing thousands just pottering around their houses before work. 😂

BackforGood · 05/05/2019 23:06

Last Summer I went out for the day with my adult dd. I was wearing a pedometer and she was counting steps on her phone. We were together all day (did walk a lot, sight seeing). There was a difference of literally thousands between the two counts.

nokidshere · 05/05/2019 23:07

I have mobility issues but I average around 3-400 steps a day. Today I've been upstairs twice, from the living room to the loo a handful of times, and pottered round in the kitchen cooking and tidying. Then I walked to the car, driven to Tesco's, managed a couple of aisles and came back and fell asleep on the sofa. My count for today is 331 steps.

I think there are some tall tales on this thread

Yinderling · 05/05/2019 23:08

I did over 30,000 before 9am once when I danced til 4am. Not convinced it was that healthy though due to all the alcohol consumed!
I average between 12 and 25k with walking to the bus, taking the stairs, walking the dogs and a bit of housework.

YourWinter · 05/05/2019 23:08

According to my wrist-band Fitbit I usually do between 17000 and 23000 steps - I work part time in a sit-down job and on the days I don't work I'm in the garden, or giving the dogs longer walks.

This weekend I'm looking after a friend's animals and have been walking around fields checking lambs. So far today I've done 33,376 steps and am taking the dogs up the garden again shortly...

I'm 60 something, the owner of the sheep is half my age and drives a 4x4 round the fields instead of walking, but I don't suppose he goes home and demolishes a croissant, four biscuits and a slice of cake!

Yinderling · 05/05/2019 23:10

Mine is definitely reflective of how active I am. On a weekend when I do lots of sports and dancing it often goes 30kplus but can be as low as 5k if I'm ill/working from home.

nutellalove · 05/05/2019 23:10

I do at least 10K a day pretty much every day. Walk to and from station, lunch time walk, evening walk or run. I think it's a good baseline. I would think any less is pretty sedentary too
