To think it's possible to get a wedding ring for less than £200?

DP and I are planning on going wedding ring shopping next week. We both want very plain bands, probably gold, without any kind of embellishment.

Am I being ridiculous to think we should be able to find what we're looking for, for less than £200 each? Specifically, could we get what we want in Hatton Gardens?

We could spend more, but it seems like a bit of a waste. Equally, I can't quite bring myself to buy my wedding ring from Argos or H. Samuel...

Out of interest if you want an affordable ring whats wrong with H Samuel or Argos?

Don't know about HG but I think what you have suggested is possible. Do you mean 200quid each or for both? X

itssquidstella · 05/05/2019 20:19

£200 each.

As for why not Argos, pure snobbery to be honest. May have to reconsider if I'm told we won't get what we're looking for from any independent places, though!

Mine was under that. From a proper shop, white gold. My husband’s Was bit more, but not loads (it is much thicker). All in all under £350 for both

OhTheRoses · 05/05/2019 20:20

Well mine is dainty, white and yellow gold. Purchased 28 years ago. It was £193. How can something you may wear for the rest of your life and possibly buried in or passed to a daughter and blessed before God, possibly be wasteful. Gold prices have increased. Mine has been made a bit bigger as I have aged. A less robust ring might not have withstood it.

itssquidstella · 05/05/2019 20:20

@Yura that's good to know. Are you in London?

itssquidstella · 05/05/2019 20:22

@OhTheRoses we're just trying to keep costs down as the whole wedding has spiralled a bit and we don't want to keep throwing money around. Neither of us is very sentimental about jewellery, but we would like a ring each.

My wedding ring was handmade specifically for me and all it cost was my scrap rubbish gold. I went through my old jewellery boxes and asked my mum if she had any spare broken necklaces etc and my wedding ring is now made from my late lovely gran's broken jewellery and my mum's old wedding ring. The jeweller said he could take the other gold as payment. I got a fair price for it (I'd weighed it and got quotes earlier from cash for gold type places)

ChoccieEClaire · 05/05/2019 20:22

Have a look at this company www.albarose.com/jewellery/wedding-rings
I got mine from here and you get to select exactly what you want Smile

OnlyRealButterWillDo · 05/05/2019 20:24

Can I just say, if you look at Argos jewellery and other high street jewellers such as H Samuel, it's the same stuff but vastly different prices.

combatbarbie · 05/05/2019 20:24

My dhs titanium ring was £90 from Ernest Jones

Iwantacookie · 05/05/2019 20:24

Have you got a Tesco Clubcard?
You used to be able to triple the vouchers up to use at goldsmiths.
That's what I did for my wedding.

OhTheRoses · 05/05/2019 20:25

The wedding band must be the same carat as your engagement ring otherwise they will wear against each other.

PinkiOcelot · 05/05/2019 20:26

My wedding ring is second hand 18ct gold. I paid £100 for it, but it was worth more.

Have you thought about second hand?

itssquidstella · 05/05/2019 20:26

@Iwantacookie we do have a club card but I think we have minimal points on it, so not sure it's worth much!

itssquidstella · 05/05/2019 20:27

@PinkiOcelot we would, but we have left it very late and basically need to get it sorted next weekend!

@ChoccieEClaire thanks, I'll take a look!

You could definitely get a ring for under £200. Where it comes should be irrelevant. My engagement ring was from Mappin & Webb and my wedding ring was from Ernest Jones. Chosen purely on my love for the design, not the name of the shop.
DH has very senstive skin so ended up with a titanium ring which cost £75.

1990shopefulftm · 05/05/2019 20:30

Mine was from orla james online and it was about £140 for a plain gold band and it's incredibly comfortable and hard wearing, they do free samples so we just ordered those for me and dh to check we liked the style and sizes, in the end we went for the exact same ring.

implantsandaDyson · 05/05/2019 20:31

Ours came from Ernest Jones 21 years ago. Both are plain gold D bands, it was under £100 for both.

mamalovebird · 05/05/2019 20:31

ohtheroses my engagement ring is platinum and my wedding ring is white gold and they have been absolutely fine sitting together for 8 years.

Lazypuppy · 05/05/2019 20:32

We're going opposite way spending less on everything else for the wedding but spending more on rings as we will have them for life instead of just one day.

UrbanMage · 05/05/2019 20:32

I have a 9k 2mm white gold band from Goldsmiths. Cost less than 200 and is a perfectly good ring.
I used to work in the jewellery sales industry and tbh, they aren't any more flash from other jewellers. An 18k ring will have been made in exactly the same manner and often from the same source.

DogInATent · 05/05/2019 20:33

Yes, you can. Find an independent jeweller. For a plain band they'll be ordering in from a standard supplier. They can give you the advice you need on the metal fineness, the width, and fit.

I agree with you that simple bands are perfectly adequate as wedding rings. It's not about the appearance of the ring, it's the fact you're wearing it and the meaning you both attach to that. Sod what anyone else thinks, inheritance value, etc.

Sexnotgender · 05/05/2019 20:34

I got mine online from the beautiful company. Plain white gold band.

itssquidstella · 05/05/2019 20:37

Thanks for all these recommendations - it's really helpful to have somewhere to start!
