To think I could happily never eat cheese again

Went shopping today, cheese on the list. DH puts brie in the basket.

It is so overrated, tasteless lardy crap.
I love a ripe camembert, a good Stilton or gorgonzola, feta and Halloumi are heaven. I like most cheeses. But brie doesn't deserve the name. It's such a waste of the title "cheese"

I don't think he likes it either, it's just on his tick list of 'non cheddar cheeses'

Apart from this he's an adventurous eater and likes good food. But fucking brie!

Am I alone?

If anyone knows a good brie let me know. I've tried leaving it at room temperature for a few days hours and it improves it from completely tasteless bla to pretty tasteless bla.

@Sux2buthen Sounds awful. A couple of years ago I had gallstones, and was unable to eat pretty much anything tasty. It went undiagnosed for about a year and each time I ate anything with a pinch fat, I was violently ill for about eight hours after. I didn't eat cheese for about a year, which was torture!

BadgerBrush · 05/05/2019 21:05

@iklboo Good luck! I hope they have a good selection for you!

ambereeree · 05/05/2019 21:06

Brie is a waste of cheese. Can't beat a crumbly vintage cheddar.

MeganChips · 05/05/2019 21:08

I love Brie, especially when it’s been left out as per pp’s crawling across the counter description and oozing.

But then there is no cheese I don’t love, Dairylea, plastic cheese slices, the strongest cheeses especially, the lot.

I wish I didn’t, I’d be thinner.

iklboo · 05/05/2019 21:15

Actually @BadgerBrush you'll disown me for this confession.

My favourite guilty treat is Creme del Paese cheese on crackers with.....sliced pickled onion on it Blush

Enix · 05/05/2019 21:18

Brie de Nargis and Melun are pretty good. Similar to a brie but more spreadable, Pie d'Angloys makes a nice change also.

BadgerBrush · 05/05/2019 21:20

@iklboo Ha! As I said before, I try not to be a cheese snob. My confession is that I love Baby Bel. Have done since I was a child. I probably won't put it on my Christmas cheeseboard anytime soon, but I'll never turn my nose up at it!

iklboo · 05/05/2019 21:22

What's your favourite cheese @BadgerBrush - or does it vary?

Sexnotgender · 05/05/2019 21:33

What blue do you recommend for a non blue lover badgerbrush?

I love halloumi, well aged Gouda, pecorino al tartufo... can eat cooked Camembert but not super keen on uncooked.

Aroundtheworldandback · 05/05/2019 21:39

I could live on grilled hallumi sprinkled with black sesame and thyme.

Accountant222 · 05/05/2019 21:41

I lived on cheese as a kid, Mother was a shit cook.

BadgerBrush · 05/05/2019 21:46

It's such a hard question to answer @iklboo It does vary, with the seasons, with the different batches for each individual cheese, down to my own mood of the day. I could probably give you some rough favourites... (you're going to regret asking me, because I could talk about cheese all night!)

Hard = Vintage gouda (I'm talking really aged, at least three years)

Soft = Wigmore (it's a sheep's milk brie-style cheese. It's very delicate and floral in flavour)

Blue = This is a hard one, but I'll have to say Cornish Blue. It's unlike any blue cheese out there, and tastes like digestive biscuits - it's sweet and oaty!

Goats = Golden Cross (a beautifully delicate cheese from East Sussex), although there's a new cheese on the market, called Brightwell Ash, from Oxfordshire, that has the potential to be my favourite. It's absolutely delicious, but because it's still quite new (only available about a month ago), it's still quite variable, and I haven't had any two matches that have been the same yet. (I'm also a bit biased, as I was lucky enough to visit the makers recently and got to some of the cheese, as well as bottle feed the baby goats!)

Washed rind = Probably Epoisses - it's a really smelly, strong French cheese, that is definitely not for everyone.

But just typing this, I can think of about 10 more that I would class as some of favourites!! I just really love cheese.

BadgerBrush · 05/05/2019 21:50

@Sexnotgender So, I just went to a friend's wedding yesterday, and they asked me with I could provide the cheese and do a little "presentation" and tasting during the reception (which I was more than happy to. I took a selection of cheeses that I thought would be good crowd pleasers - ones that wouldn't be too strong for people who were a little wary. For the blue cheese, I took Fourme d'Ambert. It's a very creamy, quite soft French cheese. It's actually not too dissimilar to Laughing Cow, (but much tastier). Even a lot of the children liked it, although it took them some convincing to try to first!

Sexnotgender · 05/05/2019 21:54

I’ll look into that one thank you.

Wallabyone · 05/05/2019 22:07

I like Brie, on fresh bread, with butter. Even better is cambozola!

Isitmybathtimeyet · 05/05/2019 22:56

@Badgerbrush how galling! My MiL offered to buy Stilton for us once when we visited at Christmas because ‘I know you like that stuff’ but we arrived to white Stilton because she wouldn’t buy the mouldy one.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 05/05/2019 23:05

I love cheese. The only ones I've tried and not liked, are goats cheese, feta and halloumi. I like different cheeses depending on my mood at the time. One of my best cheese treats ever, was a cheese lasagne. Layers of different cheeses interspersed with pasta. Amazing.

Gth1234 · 06/05/2019 00:06

brie's OK in a dairylea sort of way.

One you get used to blue cheeses, its hard to back to just plain brie though.

Sparklfairy · 06/05/2019 00:10

I like Aldi brie the best, but I always eat it with something tangy or spicy - nandos sauce, pickle, hp sauce are, otherwise it is just way too bland.

Hecateh · 06/05/2019 00:12

after wine cheese is the last thing I could want to give up

love lots of different cheeses but if I could only choose one it would be mature cheddar.

and if I had to choose one wine it would be 'RED' lol

DuffBeer · 06/05/2019 00:16

Brie has a hairspray aftertaste - not pleasant.

Blue cheese smells of death.

Sparkles07 · 06/05/2019 00:17

I don't eat Brie, because of the rind. I don't get it, it's weird tasteless white stuff. It's just wrong.

LondonNiki · 06/05/2019 01:10

Brie is possibly the worst ever cheese... I did buy a creamy gorgonzola today which I had on rye (heaven)....couldn't live without cheese!

flamingoflamangos · 06/05/2019 01:19

Totally agree!!!! I’d lump cheese in with the same “gin” and “Prosecco” rhetoric people trot out all the time..

managedmis · 06/05/2019 01:35

Vastly overrated.

SIL came this weekend and insisted on loads of cheese - brie, St. Agur, some other creamy crap. I like cheese but don't really get the whole cheeseboard obsession tbh
