To think I could happily never eat cheese again

Went shopping today, cheese on the list. DH puts brie in the basket.

It is so overrated, tasteless lardy crap.
I love a ripe camembert, a good Stilton or gorgonzola, feta and Halloumi are heaven. I like most cheeses. But brie doesn't deserve the name. It's such a waste of the title "cheese"

I don't think he likes it either, it's just on his tick list of 'non cheddar cheeses'

Apart from this he's an adventurous eater and likes good food. But fucking brie!

Am I alone?

If anyone knows a good brie let me know. I've tried leaving it at room temperature for a few days hours and it improves it from completely tasteless bla to pretty tasteless bla.

Apology accepted Wink

Baloonphobia · 05/05/2019 19:28

Brie is only good deep fried.

PookieDo · 05/05/2019 19:29

Hate hate Brie or Camembert I don’t know why just a texture thing maybe?

Halloumi, feta and cheddar all day please Grin

SrSteveOskowski · 05/05/2019 19:29

Brie is amazing. Cheese in general is amazing. Except for cottage cheese. Whoever thought tasteless lumps would be a good idea?

Mordred · 05/05/2019 19:32

My microbiology lecturer at Uni in the early 80s said he know FAR too much about soft cheese such as Camembert and Brie to ever want to eat it.

I love the stuff, sorry Bruce Ritchie!

iklboo · 05/05/2019 19:33

Brie is nice as pp has said in a panini with bacon (I have cranberry sauce but onion relish sounds lovely). On its own it's meh - sometimes smells of urine.

I'm currently very into cheddar with caramelised balsamic onion. Very tasty.

DS(13) loves Camembert with rosemary & garlic and crusty bread.

DH can only eat cheese if it's cooked / totally melted.

I like most cheeses ,but not really keen on brie tbh, currently on a diet so.it's fat free cottage cheese Hmm dh hates cheese won't eat it.at allShock

TheBlackDogFollowsHim · 05/05/2019 19:40

I agree wholeheartedly. What a waste of calories. Give me a vintage cheddar any day of the week.

werideatdawn · 05/05/2019 19:40

I've grown tired of cheese in recent years. Only enjoyable on a nice margherita pizza imho.

JaneJeffer · 05/05/2019 19:45

I love Brie plus it's FODMAP friendly so it's all good.

BadgerBrush · 05/05/2019 20:14

Cheesemonger here. I hate being a cheese snob, but it's unavoidable given my occupation...

What I usually think when someone says they "don't like such and such cheese" is that they actually don't like BAD such and such cheese. Which is, unfortunately, what most of the supermarkets stock, and what most people are exposed to.

Now, I don't know where you've been buying your brie, but I've never had one from a supermarket that tastes anywhere near historic, artisan brie. The classic french brie is Brie de Meaux, which is fairly strong, and has a good pong to it. I actually prefer Brie de Melun, as it's slightly saltier and has a deeper, more complex flavour. If you want to go British, try Baron Bigod, made in Suffolk. It is insanely rich and buttery, and loves to ooze everywhere (and is many cheesemonger's favourite). Someone above mentioned Rollright, and whilst it's not actually a brie, it's still a pretty good cheese.

Don't give up - I assure you, there's a good version of brie out there for you!!

Not for me. I really, really don't like any blue cheese and I've tried lots - from 'proper' places, in France etc. Same for goats cheese. I get the urge to do the Tom Hanks tongue scraping scene from Big. Grin

Isitmybathtimeyet · 05/05/2019 20:28

I am not hugely fond of chalky goat’s cheese (although love it cooked) but goat’s Camembert and, best of all, blue goat’s cheese is awesome.

How exciting to have a cheesemonger on here! Big fan of oozing Brie de Meaux but will try de Melun now. Cheap brie from the fridge is rubber. My MiL occasionally buys brie when feeling daring but keeps it in the fridge at all times and throws it out when it goes ‘soft’. Shock

BadmintonBadass · 05/05/2019 20:30

Not into cheese but I do enjoy halloumi and dishes such as macaroni cheese!
Idea if eating a really stinky cheese grosses me out!

Greeborising · 05/05/2019 20:32

Fin we had some Stinking Bishop once(never again!)
It was double wrapped in the fridge and THE WHOLE HOUSE STUNK OF IT!!

iklboo · 05/05/2019 20:39

I am VERY excited that there's a cheesemongers opening in our town. Even though whenever I eat cheese I go scarlet red from hairline to sternum and extremely hot to the touch (as in it feels like I have a very high temperature).

BadgerBrush · 05/05/2019 20:40

One of the most exciting aspects of my job is helping finding an "in" into certain cheese types. Blue and goats cheese are what most people dislike, and I can honestly say that I've had a 100% success rate in finding the right cheeses for the right people. My wife hates hates hates goats cheese (much to my annoyance), but I was able to find at least two examples that she really likes. There is SUCH a vast variety of all types of cheese, that I honestly believe there's something for everyone. Keep trying, when you find "the one" I' sure you'll be so glad!

zukiecat · 05/05/2019 20:46

I'm not a fan of cheese at all either

I don't like milk, butter, cream, yogurt or anything dairy at all really

If I do eat cheese, it will only be mature cheddar, Leerdammer or Jarlsberg, any other cheese is horrible.

So I'd be quite happy to never eat it again, as it is I can go years without touching it!

MLMhun · 05/05/2019 20:54

Brie made me break a 25 year old plate last night!! (that I’d kept out of sentimental reasons)

I was trying to spread it out on some tiger bread (after a few wines) and struggled with it to the point my hand slipped and bye bye plate!

BadgerBrush · 05/05/2019 20:55

Isitmybathtimeyet She sounds like my own MIL! She recently wanted to throw away some cheese that I had given them because it was "mouldy", and it took me a long time to convince her that the mould was supposed to be there!

Sux2buthen · 05/05/2019 20:57

Hmm I had a break from cheese. One Christmas we had a cheese platter that at the time was the best idea ever. About two hours later....norovirus kicked in.
You do NOT want norovirus after a cheese platterConfused my bathroom was downstairs and I was upstairs at the time. That was a bad time lol. Took a long time to eat cheese again Grin

hazeyjane · 05/05/2019 20:58

I love a rubbery, feety smelling cheese like Gouda or Edam.

iklboo · 05/05/2019 20:58

@BadgerBrush - that sounds like a plan, to be honest. I may have to camp outside the new shop when it opens.

SilverySurfer · 05/05/2019 21:00

My favourite cheese is white stilton - I wouldn't eat brie if you paid me.
