would you do this and put it on your mantlepiece? Seems to me very morbid and grim

Well, it's not something that I would want to do, but definitely preferable to taxidermy! Personally, I find photos and videos are sufficient mementos. Each to their own, I guess.

In WWll the Germans skinned Jews and made lampshades.

Not only does it echo past atrocious acts it’s Distasteful in the extreme.

I spoke to my husband about this a few years ago, I never knew it was an actual thing. I would like to do this if he died first, I love his tattoos, and they're such a massive part of who he is. He would go for it, no problem.

It really doesn’t matter two hoots whether any of us like it or not, does it?
Everyone grieves in their own way, everyone keeps mementoes or not, and this particular person presumably finds the tattoo comforting.
I kept a lock of DH’s hair to stroke. As a Christian I know his soul is with God, and his mortal remains are buried in our churchyard, but I just wanted something physical to hang onto until we are reunited.

Taxidermy ( of a sort) is already a thing

44% of Americans are tattooed so yes they will be minted.

Now that i have thought about it yes maybe if it suits some people then it fine btu I agree with the serial killer workshop view, just too much like something from Criminal Minds
