St Ives/Carbis Bay recommendations

I've just discovered my dream accommodation is £1000 a night and that doesn't even have a sea view but is one minute from the beach. The bathroom and bedroom set up is so not great.
I've never been before but have my heart set on this location as it's a special trip for someone special with very special memories there. Lots of specials!
There's 2 adults and 3 children age 5, 11, and 13. We'll be going by train.
It needs to be somewhere with no steep hills or steps as the special person is 80.
Can anyone recommend anywhere not extortionate to stay please? I'm thinking next Easter or next August. It's the UK, the weather is not guaranteed so either time is fine really.

We went to a bay over last year, we could see Carbis and St Ives from our beach. We drove into St Ives and after 1 hour of trying to find a parking space, we returned to our quiet and beautiful beach. That was in August

Easter or May half term works for us.
Pp is Carbis Bay Estate as lovely as it looks? Worth the money? This is a once in a lifetime trip we'll be doing.

I stayed at the Carbis Bay Hotel and really wouldn’t recommend it. Many of the rooms are very small and jaded, and the service generally was awful. Totally overpriced imo.

I find it a bit ironic that somewhere I grew up in and couldn’t wait to leave is commanding a £1000 a night! Imo Cornwall in general really isn’t all that. Plenty of places in the world are way more stunning,

However, OP, it sounds like you are doing a really lovely treat for someone so I hope you find somewhere good and have a lovely time.

It’s a strange location - other than it and the beach there’s nothing else there IIRC. So for your stairs person it might be quite limiting.

You might do better in St Ives round Easter time (as others have said far quieter than August) as there’s more to do in the immediate vicinity.
And I’m sure you’ll find somewhere with equally stunning views.

I don't know if that was directed at me op but in case I'm inclined to agree with ichhabe tbh - although not sure if that's as I'm too 'close' to be objective, iyswim.... The area is gorgeous (we left as while it's lovely to visit it's just not somewhere you live if you can see what I mean, ref previous posts re parking and crowds!!) but think nowadays - particularly with building work ongoing - I would stay elsewhere....

Check out TripAdvisor for a more 'balanced' viewpoint!! Grin

Thanks all.
I know what you mean. We lived on Anglesey for a few years and everyone said how lucky I was. I hated it. Lovely for a visit but bloody awful to live there when I was 19.

I've been to Newquay before it got trendy. About 1981 I think! Bude a couple of times, Truro, Lands End and St Michaels Mount for a quick visit. But never St Ives.

I'll keep researching Smile

We went last year OP, in March. It was busy even out of season, especially around the harbour area. We stayed at Una St Ives which was fantastic but just outside Carbis Bay.... eco lodges with a huge leisure complex and gorgeous restaurant. We loved it but you'd need a car to stay there.... I saw you said you were going by train.

We loved the Lelant/Saltings area along the train line a couple of miles out of St Ives... seemed quite flat and easy to grab the train into St Ives along some beautiful coastline. We walked the dog every day there along the gorgeous estuary. We've since looked at cottages there which are a bit more reasonable than St Ives itself.

This place is on the flat of Downalong. We love it, walkable everywhere.

The apartments l have stayed in had steps up but they may have others with no steps.

I grew up in west Cornwall. And we are going to St Ives this month. I really like Cornwall cottage boutique. Best mix of luxury and ok prices. Not the silly money of Cornish gems. Most things nicer than aspects. Good service. I’d probably not do carbis bay hotel - carbis bay is an amazing beach but the hotel is the only thing there. The St Ives harbour would be better for a hotel imo. We are staying in downalong this time.

If I can recommend my own home town, Falmouth is also lovely, another historic Cornish town, and though still hilly (everything in Cornwall is, though), it’s much less steep than St Ives. You’ll likely find the beaches far more accessible here. Plus, the main sea front is very unspoiled, it’s just hotel fronts and wide promenade paths, so you can properly enjoy the sea views. Much less crowded, too.

Agree with PPs, St Ives is lovely, but there’s just no point going when it’s so rammed with tourists that you can’t enjoy it.

What about the other side of the bay over at Hayle and surrounds? Flatter that side. Gwythian is one of my favourite beachesm
