St Ives/Carbis Bay recommendations

I've just discovered my dream accommodation is £1000 a night and that doesn't even have a sea view but is one minute from the beach. The bathroom and bedroom set up is so not great.
I've never been before but have my heart set on this location as it's a special trip for someone special with very special memories there. Lots of specials!
There's 2 adults and 3 children age 5, 11, and 13. We'll be going by train.
It needs to be somewhere with no steep hills or steps as the special person is 80.
Can anyone recommend anywhere not extortionate to stay please? I'm thinking next Easter or next August. It's the UK, the weather is not guaranteed so either time is fine really.

Unfortunately St Ives is full of very steep hills. You really can’t get about without encountering them.

Motheroffeminists · 04/05/2019 18:32

As long as the accommodation isn't up a hill, it would be ok. We wouldn't be able to be up and down several times a day though.

If you look for somewhere in Downalong you are minutes from the beaches and town - no hills as far as I remember?

WallisFrizz · 04/05/2019 18:35

Look at the Aspects holidays website. We’ve booked lovely apartments there for the past few years. It is quite a hilly area though from what I remember.

Bamaluz · 04/05/2019 18:36

A cottage in Downalong would be on the flat but wouldn't have sea views.
I would look at St Ives Holidays, or Aspects. If you give them a ring I'm sure they could advise you as to what would be suitable, but August would be very expensive. You might be luckier with Easter especially if your school holidays are different to other areas.

Lilacks · 04/05/2019 18:41

Does the person who can’t cope with the hills need to be able to access the beach?
If not what about this?

Beach access (by foot) is down a steep hill.

Lilacks · 04/05/2019 18:43

If that one’s no good though, you might find other options in the St Ives / Carbis Bay area on that website

PianoTuner567 · 04/05/2019 18:50

The land begins to rise about two streets in from the harbour in St Ives though so you’re going to be very limited. Or go out of town but drive in?

FreeTedHastings · 04/05/2019 19:02

Carbis Bay is lovely but it is very steep. You'd have to be close to the beach.

If you want no hill beach access and a sea view in St Ives for five people in August peak holiday time you'll be looking pretty much at Downalong and at a price of about £2k a week. Lots of the holiday companies allow you to search by 'sea view'.

In addition to Cornish Gems, there are many other St Ives/Carbis Bay specialists such as Cornish Gems, Orange Roofs, Aspects Holidays and Carbis Bay Holidays.

If you are going this August you may struggle to find a good choice for this year this late. Lots of people book the same place every year for the same week or two.

Also if it's a special trip and you want to eat out in peak holiday time, you'll need to book your 'special' restaurants a couple of weeks (or more!) in advance.

Motheroffeminists · 04/05/2019 19:07

Thank you. It's going to be for next Easter or summer.

The carbis bay estate is my dream place but is just so expensive. We'd only be there 3 or 4 nights as will be stopping overnight on the way down and probably on the way back up too.

OP posts:
LEDadjacent · 04/05/2019 19:18

At peak times you may struggle to book somewhere for less than a week.

DragonMamma · 04/05/2019 19:20

Try Blue Chip holidays

We rented this house when we went to Carbis Bay. I don’t think you’ll get anything for less than a week, especially in peak times.

Looks like it would have to be a hotel or b&b for a few nights. Of course the Carbis Bay hotel and estate does a few nights 😩

Lilacks · 04/05/2019 19:41

I’ve seen the Carbis Bay Hotel on Secret Escapes so get yourself signed up on there.

Lilacks · 04/05/2019 19:49

Eg, currently on Secret Escapes The Gannet Inn is on offer (up to 61% off) showing availability for August. (I think it’s owned by the Carbis Bay Estate)

Slatkater · 04/05/2019 19:50

Carbis Bay Hotel is very expensive, but it does feature regularly on Secret Escapes for out of season breaks as Lilacks says. There is still a bit of a hill to the beach though.

eeela · 04/05/2019 20:00

Do not go in August. It's hell. St Ives is wonderful, but Jesus Christ - just don't. Easter hols are busy but manageable. Esp with an 80 year old, the streets are absolutely rammed in August, as are all the pubs/shops/beaches.

Sorry no recommendations for accom, just wanted to mention the above (as it's a TOTALLY different place during August compared to any other time).

Can they manage any steps? I know of a few lovely 2-3 room apartments v centrally but with a flight of stairs up to them etc. Might be an idea to stay somewhere along the train line into st ives? Lelant etc? Don't know if there are more options there.

Motheroffeminists · 04/05/2019 20:05

Yes she can do stairs/steps fine as long as there's a handrail. It's just frequent up and down that wouldn't be ok. She's pretty fit but her balance isn't great at times and she trips so she's had a few major bone breaks over the past 3 years including her neck so I'm overly cautious.

Vellia · 04/05/2019 20:06

Carbis Bay is just one steep hill up from the beach. Every day starts with a steep walk down hill and ends with a steep walk up hill.

onalongsabbatical · 04/05/2019 20:23

We stayed in a lovely little flat on the Porthmeor side of St Ives, OP, with outside parking, on the ground floor, just round the corner from the beach. It doesn't sound quite right for your party but close - Aspects Holidays - they were great and they have got surprisingly quite a few places with parking. Try them. This was ours. I went for amazing early morning walks on the beach while almost no-one else was up and it was gorgeous. www.aspects-holidays.co.uk/cornwall/west-cornwall/st-ives/porthmeor/p/beachside

LizzieSiddal · 04/05/2019 20:38

I agree that August in mayhem in St Ives. You’ll be much better going for Easter.

FreeTedHastings · 04/05/2019 20:50

The Carbis Bay hotel is lovely! I've not stayed but I've been for champagne and cream tea, and there is a nice cafe on the beach.

I bet they can arrange a lift up to the station if you want to go into St Ives by train.

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 04/05/2019 20:53

I agree with PPs who've voted against the area in August - I lived and worked at the carbis bay estate for several years and it was fucking horrific mid June to mid sept, IMO. Easter/may is lovely and as all the locals will tell you the best/most reliable weather is often around this time.

Can't recommend anywhere to stay as it's all much of a muchness around there (and Jeff all for your money!) but everyone falls in love with the place so you'll not go far wrong!
