Lib Dems and Greens living in denial

Notanidiot · 03/05/2019 22:37

Do they seiously believe that doing better in the local elections last night means that

a) most people that switched to them agree with their national policy to remain in the EU and/or,

b) they will suddenly be a major force in the next General Election.

Instead the reality is that Labour and Tories are currently not worth voting for due to many issues including the Brexit debacle.

So as the vote was only about who runs the local council (hence the low turnouts) it didn't matter who people voted for as long as was not the Conservatives or Labour.

If a General Election happens the Greens and Lib Dems will still have a minimal amount of MPs. Especially when the Lib Dems have still not been forgiven for abetting the Conservatives for a little taste of power.

NotAnIdiot

Are you sure?

NoYo · 03/05/2019 22:45

Think it will be interesting to see the EU election results. Looks like the Brexit Party will do rather well.

I wouldn't read too much into local election results as a rule, but we'll have a better idea after the 23rd.

TheCrowFromBelow · 03/05/2019 22:46

Go to bed Jeremy it’s late

5foot5 · 03/05/2019 22:51

I voted Lib Dem and Green (we could choose up to two) and my primary
reason for doing so was point a.

I don't know how they would fare in a general election but if there was one tomorrow I would probably vote Lib Dem.

What seems most blinkered to me is the way TM interprets these results as a sign that we want Brexit to be delivered. Right, so a huge swing to the pro Remain parties and that's what she takes from it?

Unescorted · 03/05/2019 22:54

I can only speak for myself - unlike the op who seems to have a superpower of knowing everyone's voting motivation.

I voted for a party candidate with a pro remain national stance. I didn't vote Labour because of the fence sitting - despite them having a vey good local candidate. I didn't vote conservative because I do not agree with their stance on Brexit, their handling of Brexit or their local austerity policies. So I hope the national parties realise that I voted with the intention of voting for the party which best represents my views on Brexit and pledges to abolish austerity. At the moment that is the Green Party or the Lib Dems.

Beautifully put Unescorted

And 😂😂😂 at Lizzie

Talk about living in denial...

Look, @Notanidiot (really?) BBC good food has some lovely recipes for lemonade Wink

TheABC · 03/05/2019 22:59

I can't comment on anyone else, but I voted green due to their pro remain and pro environment policy.

I am surprised UKIP did not do better TBH and I do think local issues played a massive part in this result. The European elections should give a clearer picture as there will be remain/leave parties in every seat as well as the fence sitters (can't be comfortable!).

HoustonBess · 03/05/2019 23:01

The reality is that the referendum result was very nearly 50:50 and the shitshow taking place ever since will have persuaded quite a few leave voters that it's a bad idea.

There's no majority for brexit. Election results will reflect that from now on.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 03/05/2019 23:04

I voted for a party candidate with a pro remain national stance. I didn't vote Labour because of the fence sitting. I didn't vote conservative because I do not agree with their stance on Brexit, their handling of Brexit

This. I mean, there are also other reasons I didn't vote Labour, but that's beside the point... Some people definitely did vote Lib Dem or Green because of pro-Remain sentiment. Other people may have had different motivations.

It seems reasonable to me that, short of a major change in direction for the two main parties, the Lib Dems, and to a lesser extent, the Greens, may see significant gains at the next general election. Equally they may not - but I know I won't be voting for the status quo.

RuffleCrow · 03/05/2019 23:07

protest vote.

Unfinishedkitchen · 03/05/2019 23:29

So Tory or Labour HQ have started sending their minions to create posts to try and prove their theory that the vote wasn’t Brexit related....nice try.

Local issues must take a back set for now.

The remainer half of the country as well as former leavers who can now see what Brexit is really about (an American backed neoliberal right wing coup to reduce our rights to those of Americans) have now finally started fighting back against this BS.

TheGoogleMum · 03/05/2019 23:46

Greens and lib dems want to encourage people to vote for them. If they said oh well it's only protest votes it doesn't really inspire much confidence does it? More people might vote that way if they thought they had a chance of winning

mysteryfairy · 03/05/2019 23:51

I voted Lib Dem yesterday for the first time ever because of their pre EU stance. I had never voted anything but labour before. I emailed my mp and my local labour candidate to explain that I couldn’t accept

  1. having my vote in the GE cast as a vote for the Labour Party manifesto pledge
  2. the stance of their party re a people’s vote

I know a ton of people who voted Lib Dem or Green for exactly the same reasons. Anyone who is still pro leave and chose to vote for either Lib Dem or Green must add weight to the common misapprehension that leavers are a bit thick.

Notanidiot · 03/05/2019 23:54

Stopped voting Labour due to Blair and the Iraq war.

Voted for them again when he went. Stopped again due to Corbyn and Momentum.

Have in the past voted for Greens and the Lib Dems.

Never voted for UKIP.

So I have often voted for those who don't stand a chance in my area accepting that the majority view wins however small that majority was.

Why can't the same apply to the referendum result?

And please don't launch a tirade of vitriol at me. I do not fit any of your particular and obnoxious stereotypes of someone who voted to leave.

They seem to be doing alright to me. I’m sure they’re perfectly happy. So yes and yes.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/05/2019 00:02

We only had Labour or Tory standing in our area!

RedSheep73 · 04/05/2019 00:05

So? they did well yesterday, should they not celebrate that? not sure what op is really trying to say.

RustyBear · 04/05/2019 00:08

In our area, there was a big switch away from the Tories, who have controlled the Council for years, to LibDems and to a lesser extent Labour & Independent, reducing the Tories majority to 4.
But I think in our case, the main reason was not Brexit, but the total mess the current Council have made over regenerating the town centre, and various other issues. (the Councillor responsible for overseeing the regeneration lost his seat in a generally safe Tory ward)
There was a low turnout, and a lot of spoiled papers, and I think a lot of once-loyal Tory supporters didn't want to vote for the Tories, but couldn't bring themselves to vote for the opposition parties either. The hope is that the reduction of the Tories majority and the fear that they might lose it next time, (or even sooner if there are bye-elections) will force the Council to get things sorted. Ironically, if they do, the protest voters will probably switch back to the Tories again...

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/05/2019 00:14

I know loads of people who voted Libdem and Greens precisely because they are pro Remain OP. I think you are the one in denial OP.

pigsDOfly · 04/05/2019 00:18

It was a local election, I voted for the party that I felt would best serve our local community.

That's not the party I feel will best serve the country though, and I will be voting for a different party when it comes to the European elections and in a general election.
