To be mad with the BBC re election reporting

Conservatives have lost a shit tonne of seats, so have Labour.

Lib Dems, Green and a load of pro Remain Independents have seen a massive upswing in votes.

Why, then, is the message that's coming across that the public want Brexit to happen ASAP. Surely the opposite?!

Normally I'm a big fan of the BBC but this is really winding me up.

Sky too is sending out the message that the Lib Dems etc won because the Conservatives and Labour couldn't sort out Brexit so they better start sorting it out. DH and I were Hmm
That's not the way we were reading the results. Independently of each other.
We're in Ireland and have involvement in British politics and were just watching the news.

There I go. A much more interesting graph.

Leavers think the bbc is pro-remain and remainers think the bbc is pro-leave.

A lot of Votes today were protest votes but against what exactly.

Wait until the Euro elections, when hopefully it will be clearer.

catx1606 · 03/05/2019 21:17

"I think it's weird to interpret the results as supporting Brexit but then I guess if you are pro-Brexit and live somewhere without UKIP standing, who do you vote for to represent you?"

The last bit is pretty spot on. UKIP weren't represented in quite a few areas, people didn't know who to vote for if that option wasn't there. Also people didn't vote because they are disalusioned and fed up with it all.

amicissimma · 03/05/2019 21:20

As they didn't count the votes in the middle of the night so results are still coming in, the detailed picture keeps changing, but broadly it seems that:

Turn out was very low - I've heard 40%
The incumbent party would expect to make losses mid-term but the Tories have done so spectacularly
The main opposition party (Labour today) would expect to make gains but has actually made a loss
The Lib Dems are more-or-less back where they were before the University fees fiasco
The Greens have done well - some commentators are suggesting that this is in part due to the raised awareness of green issues thanks to the Extinction Rebellion events
Independents have done particularly well. It seems to me that local elections are a good time to vote for an independent standing on a particular local issue (as well as sending a 'no thanks' message to the main parties)
A large number of people may have spoiled their papers, implying that they bothered to vote but didn't want to vote for any offered party.

It will be interesting to see how large the turn out was and how many spoiled papers there were.

Personally, I agree with PP, that the local elections don't seem a very good way to 'comment' on Brexit. Specially with the EU elections coming up.

I'm expecting to hear a great deal of 'expert' analysis in the next few days, with each analyst interpreting the results in favour of his or her view point. Which may, or may not, be of much use.

Helmetbymidnight · 03/05/2019 21:20

the cons brexit commitment not good enough for you?

AlunWynsKnee · 03/05/2019 21:22

Will the voting be any clearer at the European elections?

Helmetbymidnight · 03/05/2019 21:25

yeah id have far more respect for a pm who said well, that was a shit show- we need to dig deeper and work out what exactly people want here and how we can deliver.

but just as with the ref we know the cons never can bring themselves to say that.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 03/05/2019 21:25

Have the LibDems done better only because because remainers voted for them? People are pissed off with the Conservative's handling of Brexit and Labour's general shit show, which I think has resulted in spoilt ballot papers and lots of people not bothering to vote who previously would have.

Helmetbymidnight · 03/05/2019 21:28

only a ref will give us clarity on the brexit question.

Yabbers · 03/05/2019 21:31

Because people are angry at politicians for failing to carry out the will of the people, ie make Brexit happen
Presumably the parties who have done well are standing on a Hard Brexit / No deal ticket then, are they? Or are the parties who have done well, the ones who have criticised and voted down all of the Tory attempts to take us out of the EU? Because not a single opposition position seems to suggest they want the U.K. to leave the EU.

The prime minister, who was heckled by a party activist as she began to address the Welsh Conservative conference, said the voters were giving a “simple message” to the Conservatives and Labour: “Just get on and deliver Brexit.”

Many Labour MPs suggested the results underlined the urgency for Labour to shift to a full-throated remain position. But Corbyn insisted: “I think it means there’s a huge impetus on every MP, and they’ve all got that message, whether they themselves are leave or remain – or the people across the country – that an arrangement has to be made, a deal has to be done. Parliament has to resolve this issue – I think that is very, very clear.”

Both the incompetents are in Cloud Cuckoo Land. Unbelievable.

InglouriousBasterd · 03/05/2019 21:39

Yes!! I thought I was going mad.

RussianSpamBot · 03/05/2019 21:53

It's only weird if you think they're not doing it on purpose.

Helmetbymidnight · 03/05/2019 21:53

from twitter:

Brexity Tories lose 1,300 seats
Brexity Labour lose nearly 100
Brexity UKIP lose nearly 150
Remainy Greens gain nearly 200
Remainy LDs gain nearly 700

May and Corbyn promptly interpret this as a demand from the people to get on with Brexit....

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/05/2019 21:56

Twats...

Honestly, im running out of words

beanaseireann · 04/05/2019 09:46

The Financial Times headline today reads :
"Poll Drubbing Spurs Corbyn and May to promise Brexit Deal Push.
Local election losses blamed on impasse."

So not just the BBC and Sky News.
The political commentators/ journalists are reading the election results as the above but glad to see on this thread I'm not alone in thinking the local election results were showing that Brexit might not be what people want now.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/05/2019 10:06

Ive been awake for 5 minutes and already ive yelled at the telly

Some utter fuckwit saying, no we have the results of the local elections saying Deliver brexit

How the fuck are these people able to walk and breathe at the same time!

And as i said before I'd be happy to agree that there have been a variety of reasons why this happened

BUT IT HASNT HAPPENED PURELY BECAUSE THE ENTIRE FUCKING COUNTRY WANTS BREXIT

beanaseireann · 04/05/2019 14:13

Has any political commentator read the results as many of us have on this thread or are they all in agreement it's because Brexit hasn't happened ?
