To think it is wrong to tell people of redundancies by email, and on a Friday before a bank holiday

As has happened to those who work for the Evening Standard today. Managed by Gideon Osbourne, former chancellor.

I didn't read it when I read the paper on my way home today, surprise, surprise.

It is normal to make employees redundant on a Friday and they start back the following week as self-employed.

AppleKatie · 04/05/2019 11:40

That isn’t ‘normal’. And I’m pretty sure it’s also illegal.

InceyWinceyette · 04/05/2019 12:09

“His name is George. Calling him Gideon is rude, inappropriate and undermines any argument you might be making”

No it doesn’t. It is rude to mid-G him, but is a separate issue to the discussion about redundancy timing.

Rudeness might affect the way the discussion is viewed by other participants but it doesn’t undermine the point itself.

luckylavender · 04/05/2019 12:17

His name isn't George. His name is Gideon (see my earlier post). I see nothing anti-Semitic in calling someone by their real name. That's because I'm not an anti-Semite.

greenlloon · 04/05/2019 12:30

everyone that voted remain voted with him i think all pp should post what they voted in the eu referendum for me i never voted for him in any election and voted leve

it might not be anti semitic but its a lie
his name is George thats his name on his birth certificate but many people choose to go by a different name than their birth name but he hasn't i mean people didnt call blair Anthony

luckylavender · 04/05/2019 12:50

I can't see why calling him Gideon is incorrect actually. He was born Gideon Oliver Osborne but decided to be known as George when he was 13.

He wasn't named George at birth.

FunkyKingston · 04/05/2019 12:56

In any yes/no referendum you end uo voting with people who think the same way as you do on that given issue who you may disagree with about everything else.

But if you reallty want to play that game, as a leave voter you made common cause with Tommy Robinson, The BNP, The Orange order and the DUP etc. So you lose.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/05/2019 14:27

I assume as it's a paper they don't work the usual 5 day a week work weeks anyway?

Still - I thought it was standard practice not to do these things on a Friday.

optimisticpessimist01 · 04/05/2019 14:33

They haven't been officially made redundant though? It's not an individual email telling someone they have no job - if it was that would be despicable

Also, Friday is the best time to tell someone bad news. Have the weekend to digest and have some time away from work, even more so now its the bank hol

KillJester · 04/05/2019 14:36

Gideon is his middle name. Not particularly rude to call someone a name his parents gave him. It’s certainly a lot more polite than any name I’d use for him!

Backwoodsgirl · 04/05/2019 14:38

Bad news is always delivered on a Friday

Mousetolioness · 04/05/2019 14:42

I understood that it was (and possibly still is) commonplace in the corporate world to task an individual with responsibility for handling the face to face confirmation of redundancies and then in turn make that person redundant! I live in hope...

GlitterPixie · 04/05/2019 14:47

I turned up for work one morning to a security guard at the door telling us to collect any personal effects from lockers as the business was closed effectively immediately. Our manager at the time knew this was coming for weeks and said nothing

justgivemewine · 04/05/2019 14:49

Think its fairly usual to do this on a friday (not necessarily by email). Sadly there's never a good time to tell employees their job is at risk. We found out that dh was at risk in early Dceember, and although not long before christmas felt really shitty, at least we were able to adjust out christmas spending just in case.

Polarbearflavour · 04/05/2019 15:13

And this is exactly why so few employees have loyalty to their companies.

mrsdopamine · 04/05/2019 17:54

My OH got told on the phone the day before we got married.

hopelesslycynical · 04/05/2019 18:31

That’s nothing! When I was made redundant, I heard it about it first on the BBC 10 o’clock news Hmm

SandyY2K · 04/05/2019 18:36

As someone who works in HR, there is never a good time to deliver this news.

I advise against before Christmas, then ppl dint want to hear it straightaway in the new year...but often things have to kick in before a new financial year.

I get staff complaining they're just about to start mat leave...or just had a baby. It sucks whenever you do it...Monday morning...Friday afternoon...it's never good news.

Ifigotherewillbedouble · 04/05/2019 19:00

I was confused by the whole George/Gideon thing - but it also reminded me of the time my (2nd) future DH and I were explaining to my children that we were getting married and that he would be their step father. The children asked what they should call him and we said what would you like to call him. This opened up a bit of a debate with the then 8 year old DD, with the then 4 year old DD deep in thought until she piped up, “I think I’ll call him George.”

lljkk · 05/05/2019 07:28

I'm in YABU group. By email is fine by me & long weekend to ponder the situation, decide what strategy I want in reply, also sounds good. Especially given that it's just notice that some redundancies will happen eventually. Can't object at all.

ForalltheSaints · 06/05/2019 17:54

Former bosses of France Telecom have gone on trial re the deaths after restructuring (suicides). Hopefully this will not be repeated at all with the Evening Standard or anywhere else. Though it shows how important it is to be sensitive when breaking such news.

We had an agency telling us one of the papers we worked for was going down the pan! I was actually on the phone to them and they were reading the news out to me Shock

Luckily the others remained operational so no job losses.
