I am unreasonable with what I drink...

For the past few weeks, I have been pretty un-well, always have a very sore headache, around the eye and the nose and this is also impacted with my endometriosis.

My husband tells me that I am not helping myself by drinking so much sprite, Fanta or coke-zero per day. I used to drink Coke Zero but switched to sprite because of the no caffeine but my husband thinks I should not drink any of these drinks unless I am out for dinner. I need to be honest and say I consume around 2 litres per day of sprite, very little water apart from at night and I do not drink alcohol.

Could my husband have a point?

He says I should drink only water but that seems crazy to me as I always have a sprite with my dinner or lunch. What do you all drink?

@Mominatrix I run half as much as you but am far more chilled. I suggest you go and have a glass of champagne and calm down a bit.

Ihatehashtags · 03/05/2019 20:50

Wow you’re even worse than my hubby! I just drink water probably 1.5l a day and I have 2-3 cups of coffee. I don’t think that much sprite would be good for you.

Bluntness100 · 03/05/2019 21:00

I do similar op. But cola zero is my vice. I drink a couple of litres a day.

If you're drinking the sugary full fat versions it will of course impact your weight. It's no different to stuffing yourself with mars bars.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/05/2019 21:00

Flavoured fizzy drinks, diet or sugary, often come with other substances that cause concern

e.g. Phosphoric acid - attacks the enamel in your teeth,
also linked to lower bone density in women (American J Clinical Nutrition)

"Carbonated beverages and chronic kidney disease", Epidemiology. 2007 Jul;18(4):501-6.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17525693

There isn't a smoking gun, but there are a huge number of studies in reputable journals warning of the risks of flavoured fizzy drinks.
Seems sensible to keep them to an occasional or low level indulgence, not a large habit

Mcl1 · 03/05/2019 21:07

Does the pain go if you cut out fizzy drinks? Can't possibly see how endometriosis has anything to do with it. If improvement without the fuzzy stuff then there is your answer. If no improvement within a week, see a doctor, particularly if you are not normally prone to hesdaches

Triskaidekaphilia · 03/05/2019 23:34

I drink at least 2l water, usually a decaf iced coffee if I'm at work, and a fizzy drink once or twice a week, either can or small bottle. I used to drink a can of coke zero a day until I quit caffeine- I thought this wasn't that bad but my dentist was horrified!

ptumbi · 04/05/2019 12:05

I read an article by an American guy who drink fizzy drinks, interspersed with coffe - shots of espresso, or cappuccino - and he assumed he was getting sufficient hydration. Despite his urine getting darker and darker. Eventually he did serious damage to his ?kidneys? (can't remember now - possibly another organ) without realising it.

Your habit of 2L of fizzy chemicals is probably seriously dehydrating you - sweeteners and sugars will do that. Unless you are eating huge amounts of fruit and juicy veg, you aren't getting hydration from anywhere else.

Check your urine - it should be pale yellow.

Listen to your husband. Cut out the chemicals and your body will thank you. (I drink at least 1L of water a day, (try for 2L), and have Rooibos tea (black no sugar) and plenty of veg. I also drink coffee occasionally, and vodka at weekends with fizzy water)

PurpleDaisies · 04/05/2019 12:15

This is utter rubbish.

Msgiggles30 · 04/05/2019 12:18

I am slightly addicted to coke zero and have one can a day or every other day which feels a lot but now realise its probably not! I also drink around 2.5 l of water a day and no tea/coffee so dont feel its too bad Blush. I have a 850ml water bottle that i make sure i drink one during the morning then refil at lunchtime and do the same after school then until evening. It helps to regulate water intake for me. You can get the ones with the times on

ptumbi · 04/05/2019 12:25

Purpledaisies This it NOT utter rubbish. this article explains why sugar needs water for the body to process it. Therefore it is a diuretic.

Where do you get your opinion from? Hmm

PurpleDaisies · 04/05/2019 12:30

My medical degree.

Yes, the body needs sugar to process it but the amount in comparison to the water content of the drink is minimal.

Pure water is obviously better but fizzy drinks, tea and coffee can still be hydrating.

PurpleDaisies · 04/05/2019 12:30

That should say the body needs water to process sugar.

ememem84 · 04/05/2019 12:36

I’m a huge fan of fizzy drinks. I love a Diet Coke. Or a Fanta. But I know they’re not great and try to limit to one or two cans a week (has to be from a can).

Since being pregnant it’s all I want to drink. Which is a bit annoying as I know they’re not great for health weight etc. So am really seeing it as a treat at present.

Only allowing myself the can if I’ve drunk at least a litre and a half of water though.

MumOfOne92 · 04/05/2019 12:38

@Blondequeenie I used to drink 2/3 litres of diet coke/Pepsi max a day. My dentist wasn't very happy.

PurpleDaisies · 04/05/2019 12:46

ptumbi look at the “scientific” credentials of the author of the article you linked to...

Mishabae Mahoney is a Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Licensed Massage therapist, Certified Yoga Therapy Practitioner, and Registered Yoga Instructor and the owner of Deeper Balance: Integrative Healing Arts, a private practice where she offers a holistic approach to creating optimal health.

Not everything google throws up is true.

chuttypicks · 04/05/2019 15:14

If you recently stopped the caffeine, that could be causing your headache. I drink only water really apart from maybe 1 cup of decaf tea a day.

Cagliostro · 05/05/2019 09:46

I used to be totally hooked on Pepsi/Coke/dr pepper. In January 2017 I decided to cut it down to just when I was out for a meal. I made no other changes and lost 1st 10lb in 3 months. And I wasn’t even drinking anywhere near 2L a day.

I still try and stick to my rule, on really tired days I grab one but I generally regret it.

DulcieRay · 05/05/2019 09:55

I hardly drink any water and my urine is clear completely clear
If I'm asked for a sample the Dr (or more often midwife) comments on how much water I must drink

Yeah, some days not any. I drink juice, coffee, squash, and fizzy drinks. I just drink a lot. I also eat things like apples and cucumber like they're going out of fashion.

It's funny because then they'll try and tell me sugar or caffeine are dehydrating. Really depends on your overall fluid intake.

OP it's more likely your headaches are down to caffeine withdrawal. Of course it's healthier to drink water than fizzy, but it doesn't dehydrate.

PurpleDaisies · 05/05/2019 13:40

They’re wrong. Even a cup of coffee/sugary with no other liquids is still hydrating. The effect of the caffeine/sugar is only small.

BlueJava · 05/05/2019 13:42

2 litres of sprite a day is frankly not good at all in my view. Switch to water and ditch all Sprite/Coke/whatever. I guarantee you will feel a lot better after your body gets over the initial withdrawal.

Iamnotagoddess · 05/05/2019 13:45

That’s a lot.

I drink about 5 litres of water a day....

UnPocoLoco2 · 05/05/2019 17:32

That's a lot of sprite. I usually drink water and sometimes yoghurt mixed with a bit of water and pinch of salt or a glass of kefir. I don't like hot or sweet drinks. I like to think it balances out as I love chocolate and would eat it all day if I could. It doesn't really but it's what I tell myself.

Trebla · 05/05/2019 17:40

Cut it out. Are you on metformin for your endometriosis? All that sugar will be triggering all sorts of inflammatory responses.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 05/05/2019 17:44

Drink sugar free cordial...Don’t replace 2 litres of sprite with 2 litres of plain water.

UnPocoLoco2 · 05/05/2019 17:44

@PippilottaLongstocking kombucha is usually loaded with sugar if you buy it from the supermarket
