Aibu to not want to fill a smarties tube with £1 coins

This will be outing if any parents from my child's school are on here...

Both children came home from school and nursery today with a tube of smarties each as a gift from the PTA with instructions to eat them and fill the tube with £1 coins or 20p, letter specifically states not coppers or 5/10ps. Apparently the tube will hold £12 of 20pences.

There will be a prize for the class who brings back the most money.

Now I have a few issues with this:

  1. my friends child has a diary allergy was really upset he can't eat his treat (she didn't know this was happening so couldn't provide an alternative)
  2. we still have lots of Easter chocolate and don't need more
  3. dp and I both work but childcare and other costs are crippling us at the moment and we're skint, an extra £24 is really beyond us just now
  4. we've just paid £46 snack money to nursery and £12 for a school trip for one and £8 for a trip for another (amongst lots of other recent school costs)
  5. does anyone even has coins lying around the house anymore? I use contactless payment for almost everything and don't draw out cash.

The children have been hyped up about it and both have said they need to raise money for the school. I guess I'm feeling guilty that we're not in a position to participate/it's a pain in the arse idea.

YANBU
I always veto this when from time to time it's raised by our PTA as an idea and explain

  1. how it's unacceptable to ask for so much money
  2. how pressuring it is
  3. that Nestle are scum and shouldn't be involved in our fundraising.

@Nat94, there’s no “only” about £12 per child!

Mumofsend · 17/03/2022 06:44

Ours came home with this yesterday. As well as 4/5 other fundraisers since half term. Not happy and this isn't even one you could just not do as the kids know and are excited so will directly know they are missing out. Furious.

Email the head and make the point you have made on here.

At a recent duke of Edinburgh briefing my eldest was told sleeping bag doesn’t cost a lot you can get a decent one for £10 and £50 for a better one, travel mat the same and decent walking boots about £60 cheaply - no need to spend a lot and my daughter challenged it the trip was £400 parents don’t have £600 for a duke of Edinburgh trip it doesn’t make it accessible for all

I’d ask the PTA what they will use the money for.

Take the tube of smarties back to the school with a note that and says,

'unfortunately DP ate the tube that had the coins in, as he never looked at it, just put his mouth round the tube and emptied it in.

It will be a few days wait before for the coins to come out again...'

Ignore it x I can’t believe that they haven’t factored in the current inflation rate.. my annual bills have massively grown from April…. The last thing I need is someone else wanting money from me too.
