To have left him stuck in the cellar?

FreddysTash · 02/05/2019 14:13

We have a new starter at work who is a pain in the arse. He’s shadowing me and constantly disappears and is always off exploring rather than doing what he should be doing. This morning we were in the office and he asked me where he should put clinical waste. I told him we put it in the cellar but that we didn’t have time to do it now as we had to go out of office. He said he’d be quick. I said no because it takes ages to get down there, he’d need codes for the lift down there, and two different doors. He grabbed a pen and paper and asked me for the codes. Getting frustrated I wrote down the codes and told him to be really quick and off he goes.

15 minutes later he’s still not back so I check time and decide if he isn’t back by half past I’d do without him. Half past came so I packed up and headed to my car. I’d just set off when I got a frantic phone saying he was stuck in one of the rooms in the cellar. I told him to repeat the code he had and it was right so I said he’d just have to keep trying. I drove off. 5 minutes later he started ringing again. I ignored it. All in all 4 missed calls. I rang him back and he admitted he was in a different room and that’s why the code wasn’t working. I told him I’d be back at lunch. It was 9.45 at the time. He started getting irate saying it stunk down there, it was freezing, pitch black and the wind was hammering on the fire doors. I left him until 11. AIBU as he got stuck because he went where he wasn’t supposed to go?

You’re a nasty bully OP. I hope you lose your job and that new colleague gets it.

freshayrshire · 03/05/2019 18:49

Just awful behaviour from you OP. And, if the new start is as incompetent as you say, you've shot yourself in the foot by giving him a perfect example of bullying and/or line management negligence to use in his defence to any future disciplinary action against him.

MollyMinniesMum · 03/05/2019 18:50

I wouldn’t be surprised if you get disciplined for this

LaraLondon1 · 03/05/2019 18:52

I haven’t read half the thread as I haven’t any interest in whether you have since come back to state ur case . Seriously not good management on your part regardless of him being a pain in the ass . Deal with that in a professional way . Lots of comments already about fire / safety / toilet needs etc all extremely valid .
You’re supposed to be helping this new colleague settle in , not treat him like that. How would you like if you were treated like that / or any of your family ..

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/05/2019 18:53

Wow.

SirGawain · 03/05/2019 18:59

You were incredibly stupid OP. You are also a bully and if you worked for me you would be looking for another job, without a reference.
Suposing he had a medical condition that you were not aware of epilepsy, diabetes or heart problems. Suppose you had an accident whilst you were out or the was a fire in the building. You behaved like an immature ten year old.

AuldJosey · 03/05/2019 19:02

Anyone else want to know what the poor fuckers job is and what is so interesting about the place of work that he feels the need to 'explore'?

Do ye work in Frogmore Cottage? Buckingham palace? No. 10? MI5?

MummyofTw0 · 03/05/2019 19:02

I can see why you were annoyed but god forbid, what if there was a fire. I just don’t think it was worth the risk

DecomposingComposers · 03/05/2019 19:03

OP says that newbie had other phone numbers that he could have called for help but given that she left site without checking on his whereabouts how did she know that he had his phone on him or had a signal in the basement?

Regardless of whether he could have got out OP left site not knowing if he was safe or alerting other staff that he was AWOL and not leaving with her.

She's lucky that no harm had come to him.

lcl · 03/05/2019 19:03

Yep unreasonable... not got much of a conscience have you ? There’s other less passive aggressive ways of telling someone they aren’t doing their job properly. Maybe be more professional and pull him up face to face.

bethy15 · 03/05/2019 19:03

Wow, you were very unreasonable and unprofessional and uncaring.

He may annoy you, but leaving him in a cold dark place and clearly scared. In fact, you was wrong to give him the codes in the first place, you knew he wouldn't be able to really do it. He's your responsibility if he is to shadow you.
You ignored his calls after you knew he was stuck in there and left him for hours, it's just cruel.

I wouldn't talk so freely about this and hope he keeps his mouth shut because you could get in serious shit for this, and quite deservedly.

Supergrassyknoll · 03/05/2019 19:05

I'm sorry but I hope you get suitably bollcked for this, he's a new starter, trying to learn a new job, trying to impress, you've punished him sickeningly for his tenacity, it's nasty, downright dehumanising and if he were my son I'd be gunning for your arse. I hope the poor sod goes to HR.

bethy15 · 03/05/2019 19:06

My God, yeah, I didn't even think about that. A fire and he's locked down there, or an asthma attack after he paniced in there.

This honestly sounds like some awful school bullying behaviour. You would expect someone with a professional job to have grown out of such things. I can only imagine the OP in school.

Myarose1234 · 03/05/2019 19:08

Cruel.

AuldJosey · 03/05/2019 19:09

I'm claustrophobic, and have pretty severe asthma. If it were me, I would have been hysterical 2 hours later - if even still conscious!

AuldJosey · 03/05/2019 19:10

At least the poor cunt had his phone - albeit with a sadist at the other end of it!

Dropitlikeitshot · 03/05/2019 19:11

The guy went somewhere he was allowed to be, and walked into a place he wasn’t allowed to be, then getting trapped for being a nosey git.

He could have asked to be let out, without OP going back, but knew he’d be in a position of losing his job for breaking the same rule twice in probation.

I don’t blame you for not going back OP, what an utter PITA. I would have rang someone in store though and ratted him out, mainly so he wasn’t trapped down there probably needing a wee and getting paid to do absolutely nothing.

AuldJosey · 03/05/2019 19:14

Just so you know OP, H&S policies and PROCEDURES in the WORKPLACE are much tighter than in everyday life? Why? Because if there is negligence, a company (and individuals in Ireland - such as the CEO) can be sued.

You were negligent and I am pretty sure did not follow one single H&S policy.

This would easily - EASILY - be gross misconduct in most workplaces.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 03/05/2019 19:17

Is there a different code on both sides of the door or something, dancingbear? Otherwise if you can get in, you can get out again.
What’s the point of trying to prevent someone leaving a restricted area, that makes zero sense.
Anyway op says she wrote the codes down on a piece of paper, so if she deliberately left off the exit code she is an utter bitch from Hell, and I hope to God she’s reported and disciplined.

It wasn’t different to get in and out of where he was meant to be, she didn’t trap him there, it was different where he wasn’t meant to be.
OP likely didn’t know the code of that place as they weren’t allowed there either.
He wasn’t trapped, he was insistent that he would rather remain trapped, than get someone who may fire him to release him.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 03/05/2019 19:26

If no one knew the code, how did he get in?! This is getting ridiculous Grin

Dropitlikeitshot · 03/05/2019 19:27

*He would rather remain there than get someone who may fire him to release him.

Dropitlikeitshot · 03/05/2019 19:29

Who knows, they’ve not explained. If he was told off for being there before he got in there before I imagine. Maybe it was open when he got there?
