To have left him stuck in the cellar?

FreddysTash · 02/05/2019 14:13

We have a new starter at work who is a pain in the arse. He’s shadowing me and constantly disappears and is always off exploring rather than doing what he should be doing. This morning we were in the office and he asked me where he should put clinical waste. I told him we put it in the cellar but that we didn’t have time to do it now as we had to go out of office. He said he’d be quick. I said no because it takes ages to get down there, he’d need codes for the lift down there, and two different doors. He grabbed a pen and paper and asked me for the codes. Getting frustrated I wrote down the codes and told him to be really quick and off he goes.

15 minutes later he’s still not back so I check time and decide if he isn’t back by half past I’d do without him. Half past came so I packed up and headed to my car. I’d just set off when I got a frantic phone saying he was stuck in one of the rooms in the cellar. I told him to repeat the code he had and it was right so I said he’d just have to keep trying. I drove off. 5 minutes later he started ringing again. I ignored it. All in all 4 missed calls. I rang him back and he admitted he was in a different room and that’s why the code wasn’t working. I told him I’d be back at lunch. It was 9.45 at the time. He started getting irate saying it stunk down there, it was freezing, pitch black and the wind was hammering on the fire doors. I left him until 11. AIBU as he got stuck because he went where he wasn’t supposed to go?

Given that the colleague had disappeared off on a task and hadn't returned it is very odd (and unprofessional) to have not checked to see if he was okay. Even annoying colleagues are owed a duty of care which OP failed to demonstrate.

AzraiL · 03/05/2019 06:14

Not sanctimonious, just in touch with reality, procedures, regulations, OHS codes, laws etc...

fargo123 · 03/05/2019 06:23

You're a nasty bully and no doubt have been since you were young.

Why on earth didn't you call him and tell him you'd be leaving in 5/10/15 minutes and if he wasn't back you'd let another staff member know where he was, and he could report back to them when he came back upstairs? Probably because you're a nasty, power tripping, bully that's why.

cabcab · 03/05/2019 06:30

Jeez you lot are so sanctimonious

Really? When OP could've just called him and said I'm leaving now..... where are you? Just checked he was ok?

But because he's "annoying" to OP, she takes the law into her own hands and decided that she would give him a punishment.

b0bb1n · 03/05/2019 07:17

There could have been a fire or a medical emergency ffs.

TitianaTitsling · 03/05/2019 07:29

And again why didn't OP tell others he had not gone off site? In the hopefully unlikely event that he had fallen/was stuck and couldn't get help or out and there was a fire. No-one would look for him as it would be believed he was not there.

ABoozedMoose · 03/05/2019 08:06

I hope this isn't true because that's a shitty way to treat someone (however annoying). I hope he complains to your managers as that must have been a horrible thing to endure.

KidLorneRoll · 03/05/2019 08:09

Jesus, what a dick move.

Thatdilemma · 03/05/2019 08:38

'CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe

Hang on, I don’t know any door locks that have a code to enter AND a code to leave?'

Yes this is my issue too. All these doors have a keypad on one side and a twisty thing on the other side.
I can't for the life of me think how someone could get in a room with a code on but not get out.

And why would a dark, wet ,.cold empty basement have a keypad code on the inside of the door?
And why would someone walk into a pitch black dark room and shut the door behind them.

None of it makes sense so either the OP is lying about the whole thing or she's done more to aid this situation than she's letting on

No one would stay in a pitch black room for an hour to avoid getting in trouble. You would just say oh Freddy gave me the code and I got lost/stuck.

Unless he's got stuck and Freddy has told him they were coming back and wouldn't be long and then has thought it a big joke to leave him...

I cannot help thinking on the rare chance this is true that there wasn't some intention to get rid of the annoying co worker and the op thought it would be a big laugh.

My DD is caustrophobic and would have had a panic attack and passed out if trapped in a room in the light never mind the dark and the OP would have been screwed.

IAmNOTBent · 03/05/2019 08:46

Whilst the OP could have done more to help her colleague he also could have done more to help himself such as:

a) listening to her about needing to leave right then
b) not going into a room he wasn't supposed to (twice in the same week)
c) called another colleague to help get himself out.

Could the OP have done more? Yes. Could the colleague have helped himself get out of there without having to wait for the OP to get back? Actually yes.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 03/05/2019 08:57

a) listening to her about needing to leave right then OP is the senior it 8s her responsablity say no, wether the junior was listening or not
b) not going into a room he wasn't supposed to (twice in the same week) he wouldnt have got in to the room if OP hadn't goven him the access codes
c) called another colleague to help get himself out maybe he hasnt got aby one elses number, hes new and shadowing OP

SoupDragon · 03/05/2019 09:06

I know it has been said before, but what kind of room has no code to get in but a code to get out? He had the code for the room he needed. He shouldn't have been able to get in to any others.

I have my own suspicions about what kind of room it was.

GreytExpectations · 03/05/2019 09:17

OP had flounced because her post didn't get the response she was hoping for, even after her back track lie dripfeed.

IAmNOTBent · 03/05/2019 11:43

NaughtToThreeSadOnions Have you read the whole thread?

a) listening to her about needing to leave right then OP is the senior it 8s her responsablity say no, wether the junior was listening or not - she did say no, he ignored her. Even a senior can't make someone listen to them. He should have taken responsibility for listening!
b) not going into a room he wasn't supposed to (twice in the same week) he wouldnt have got in to the room if OP hadn't goven him the access codes The access codes got him into the right room. He chose to take himself into the wrong room, again.
c) called another colleague to help get himself out maybe he hasnt got aby one elses number, hes new and shadowing OP. The OP says in her posts that she had given him other colleagues' numbers and he clearly had enough phone signal to call her so could have called them but chose not to so he didn't get himself into trouble, again.

Please at least read the OP's posts before commenting.

Nesssie · 03/05/2019 14:10

GreytExpectations Agree. She probably expected everyone to have a great laugh and admire her when in fact shes revealed herself as a nasty person, terrible mentor and a bully.

I did and giceb she thinks bullying is hikarious i dont tgink its true

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 03/05/2019 14:38

Do you think he was stuck in the loo, SoupDragon? Grin

MrsCasares · 03/05/2019 14:43

I’ve worked in loads of places that use keypads to get into rooms, but to get out you just turn the doorknob.

Clinical areas too.

I don’t believe this actually happened.

catofaragon · 03/05/2019 15:06

If this story is true then you are a disgraceful employee OP and I hope the 'pain the arse' new employee (the way you described him in the first sentence of your post) reports you. Nasty, bullying behaviour. I'm actually shocked that anyone would do this.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 03/05/2019 15:08

Most security keypads are one way. If you’ve managed to get in there’s little point in preventing you getting out...

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 03/05/2019 16:11

she did say no, he ignored her. Even a senior can'tmakesomeone listen to them. He should have taken responsibility for listening! if she'd said no and said it very clearly and kept him busy so he didnt have to find something to do and busy himself in taking the clincal waste away she wouldn't have given him the acess codes, she affectively gave him premission by giving him the access codes
b) not going into a room he wasn't supposed to (twice in the same week)he wouldnt have got in to the room if OP hadn't goven him the access codesThe access codes got him into therightroom. Hechoseto take himself into the wrong room, again HOW DID HE GET THE CODES TO THE WRONG ROOM what did type in random numbers until he got in to another room?? How likely do you think this is?? And if yhe second room wasn't restricted why was he locked in it as the OP says herself and as a number of people have also pointed out what kind of room needs restricted access both ways.
c) called another colleague to help get himself outmaybe he hasnt got aby one elses number, hes new and shadowing OP. The OP says in her posts that shehadgiven him other colleagues' numbers and heclearlyhad enough phone signal to call her socouldhave called them but chose not to so he didn't get himself into trouble, again the only person 2ho is in trouble here is OP, She is arse cobering and victim blaming. Because the thread didnt go her way she drip fed that little nugget to justify her "pain in the arse" cimment. I don't belive he'd either wandered off before or had enough collegue numbers. When your trapped and in discomfort you call every number you have its servival instict even those that have no chance of being able to help. If other collueges work with them enough for this bloke to have their number don't you think theh might have gone hay op wheres new blokey haven't seen him for over an hour or after she left gone ph new blokey didnt go with op wonder if hes ok? The fact he was still there rather suggests that no hers was the only number he had and in fact they w9rk rather al9ne the fact no pne else noticed he was missing

Please at least read the OP's posts before commenting please use sone common sense before commenting

And

never ever condone bullying

Banana1984 · 03/05/2019 17:32

U was a bit mean u knew u was leaving him in there. I mean hahaha but yeah...

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 03/05/2019 17:35

Is your post written in English, Banana?

nuxe1984 · 03/05/2019 17:41

Are you female OP? If you are then it sounds as if he thinks he knows better - and I wouldn't feel guilty about this at all. He should have listened to you in the first place. Hopefully he's learnt his lesson!

NicolaC17 · 03/05/2019 17:42

You sound like a complete bitch! What if there has been a fire?
