Not AIBU, but for traffic

Second time this year I have a virus. This horrible phlegmy cough and cold. I'm hacking like I smoke 40 a day.

I was ill for ages a couple of months ago and now this!

I'm feeling sorry for myself

I have found my people! I'm sorry to hear you are all ill but I'm glad it's not just me.

Just had a terrible night coughing up stuff. Ugh. But I don't feel I have a temperature and I don't fluey - I did last time around.

@CKWattisthemanager - that's exactly what I said - can't believe I've got something so soon after I had the flu

Wish you all better

Myfanwyprice · 02/05/2019 07:47

We seem to have variations of it here, ds has the temperature, headache and stomachache, dh is just saying how rough he feels, dd has the cough, sore throat, blocked up nose and I feel full of a cold with the hacking, phlegmy cough - we’re all miserable!

TeenTitans · 02/05/2019 07:47

I honestly felt like I was dying with this. It was horrific. It's only just started to go.

whyayepetal · 02/05/2019 07:50

Oh no OP - sorry you feel rough. DD had this before Easter and it dragged on for 3 weeks. She had strong antibiotics for first week, but no improvement. GP said chest infection, but pretty sure ab's would have cleared that. From then on she had constant phlegm, very sore throat (doctor gave her a spray thing for throat which helped a bit) and felt absolutely rotten. All that seemed to work, albeit extremely slowly was rest, fluid, paracetamol/ibuprofen regularly and ice lollies. Hope you are better soon.

RedSkyLastNight · 02/05/2019 07:56

I am 6 weeks on. The doctor tells me I am very healthy -other than the cough that is. Has prescribed a nasal spray that does seem to be helping. But just have permanent sore throat and headache. And am exhausted from coughing all night. At work I have to keep walking out of meetings so my colleagues don't have to listen to my coughing fits. Beyond fed up.

VeepVeep · 02/05/2019 09:51

Do people really think it could be hayfever?

OP posts:
THEsonofaBITCH · 02/05/2019 10:02

I think hay fever could be contributory but its an add-on in my case not the root cause.

loveonthewall · 02/05/2019 13:52

_HOW TO REMOVE PHLEGM!!!
_
Sorry for shouting but this works - a respiratory physio told me when I was at my wits end with the same cough as OP.

Inhale steam either over a bowl or in the shower, then imagine your breathing on your glasses to mist them over to clean them. Do that twice in a row then on the third one cough as quickly and as hard as you can. Do this over the loo!

juneau · 02/05/2019 13:57

I and my two DSs had it over the Easter holidays - really nasty cold/cough/virus. Bleugh! I felt utterly rotten for five days with it and was coughing up phlegm for a couple of weeks afterwards. Feel fine now, thank goodness, although have a nasty mouth ulcer so I think I'm still a bit run down.

Snazzygoldfish · 02/05/2019 13:58

I've had it and for the first time ever went to the dr with a cough as it was so bad. I got antibiotics which I was sceptical about as we are told they don't work etc but omg it was so much better after a couple of days and within a week it's almost gone, I do think we need to heed the antibiotics advice but to those of you still suffering it's worth getting checked as mine was a chest infection and was cleared in days. Get well soon everyone

juneau · 02/05/2019 13:59

Ah yes, good point about hay fever, as I've also had that for the past month too and I'm sure it made the cold worse.

CKWattisthemanager · 02/05/2019 16:39

Eating something with chilli powder in it will shift a cartload of stuff off your chest. Almost too effective :)

Lwmommy · 02/05/2019 17:11

@veepveep pick up a 70p pack of 1 a day supermarket anti histamines.

If 30 mins after taking one you start to feel better then it's Hay fever, if not then you've lost 70p and need to look at cold remedies/treatment or a doctors visit.

OutInTheCountry · 02/05/2019 17:26

I’ve had cold symptoms, headache and general brain fog with loss of appetite and fatigue. I’ve finally realised it’s hay fever. I’ve never had it before and don’t have itchy eyes so I hadn’t made the connection. I’ve started antihistamines and am starting to feel better.

VeepVeep · 02/05/2019 18:05

I took an antihistamine this afternoon and it's made no difference, sadly

OP posts:
Xiaoxiong · 02/05/2019 21:22

On the advice of this thread I took antihistamines yesterday and today and I feel so much better. So in my case it may indeed have been allergies - the oddest ones I've ever had! I've never hacked up phlegm before with allergies. Very strange indeed. Or maybe I had allergies as well as a cold...

loveonthewall · 02/05/2019 21:25

Try my tip Veep!

VeepVeep · 02/05/2019 21:31

I did try an antihistamine, no joy

OP posts:
loveonthewall · 02/05/2019 21:39

No! My tip was steam, then breath twice as if you're breathing on your glasses to clean them, then cough hard on the third breath. Dislodges the phlegm. My physio who used to work with people with Cystic Fibrosis told me to try it. It worked for me x

Meandwinealone · 02/05/2019 22:20

It’s the plague brought in by forinerrs

VeepVeep · 03/05/2019 06:27

@loveonthewall - ah, yes, I shall try later if I need to, thanks

OP posts:
VeepVeep · 06/05/2019 13:18

I'm still completely bunged up - with disgusting stuff being blown out - and hacking away!

When will it stop?! 11 days in

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 06/05/2019 13:19

I have it too, I feel like shit, and my cleaner has cancelled because she's also got it, so I have to attempt to clean.

AleFailTrail · 06/05/2019 13:23

I’ve had it on and off for about eight months now! Only once did it get worse (bronchitis and pneumonia) but even now I’m still coughing three months after treatment for that. Had bloods, scans, chest X-rays and nothing showing to explain

AnnieMay100 · 06/05/2019 13:27

I’ve just got this after thinking I’d escaped it no cough but very mucussy dizzy and cold. Lymph nodes all swollen. Just hope my girls don’t catch it! Has anyone found something that eases it yet? Can’t get a doctors appointment for over a week so pain killers it is
