To try a menstrual cup?

CakePigeon4 · 01/05/2019 12:44

I’m considering giving a menstrual cup a try - I’ve moved to using period pants/reusable pads, and the cups look really comfortable and more efficient than washing reusables. Has anyone got any experience of using them? And which one - there’s about a hundred to choose from!

I had a mooncup between kids and it was brilliant but after having my second I couldn’t get on with it any more. There’s a quiz online somewhere that should tell you which one should best suit you

Fakenametodayhey · 01/05/2019 13:24

I use a moon cup and find it so much more comfortable. You do need to give it a few tries to get it in right the first time but it took me weeks to get tampo s right

Also i find tampons 'drying' and the moon cup is really natural feeling.
Id definitely go for it.
I have a main brand. Might be mooncup.
Only had to use pads after birth and i actually swapped to using reusable nappy inserts and ... no mess! So id say do it

SnaccidentsHappen · 01/05/2019 13:25

I've been converted, I use a duchess cup

Futureisland · 01/05/2019 13:28

I have a love hate with them. When I manage to get mine sitting right its fab. I've had 4 periods though with them and I still can't master it. Actually my period started today and I can't find mine. Wondering if I left it on holiday Confused

joebtfsplks · 01/05/2019 13:34

I love mine. Have used it for about 5 years now. Once you get the hang of it you won't look back. A key thing for me is that recently I was on holiday and didn't have access to naice facilities all day. Because I'd changed my cup just before we set off on our day out I didn't have to worry about it at all until the evening when we got back to our room. This was on my heaviest day as well! I don't like changing it when I'm out and about but I very rarely have to. Easier to do it where your comfortable and can wash hands thoroughly etc etc

Fink · 01/05/2019 13:38

I love mine. I've always had a Mooncup. I did the online quiz to find out what would suit me best and got confused by too much choice, so when I needed to replace my Mooncup I just went for anther one.

I have bleeding in-between periods so that I wear the cup for about 25 days a month. It still lasted 6 years, so I'm delighted with it. And this one might last longer if I'm more careful with it.

The beauty is that you never have to carry spares/worry about whether you've got enough. One cup does it all!

It can be slightly messy to start with, but you'll get the hang within a day or two.

SugarPlumLairy2 · 01/05/2019 13:40

I’ve got the Mooncup. LOVE IT.

I got it when my periods when I hit perimenopause and had terrible, heavy, continuous periods that no tampon or pad could cope with. Some days I felt like a prisoner in my bathroom. Mooncup changed that.

Have a practice with it BEFORE your period starts. Use a little lube the first time maybe but usually you won’t need it. It can cope with a heavier flow than tampons and just remember to sterilise in Milton or similar to keep it looking nice too.

Go for it👍

bridgetreilly · 01/05/2019 13:45

Life-changing for me, so yes, definitely do it, but do some research about which cup might be best for you. Mooncups are too big and stiff to be comfortable for me. I have a Tulip Cup at the moment which is really a bit too small and flexible. I liked my Lunette cup best but managed to burn a hole in it when I forgot I was boiling it to sterilise...

For me the HUGE advantage is that I usually only need to change it morning and evening, not during the day. Also that I don't need to carry stuff with me, because if I do need to change it, I just empty it into the toilet and wipe with toilet paper. Easy.

I highly recommend on Youtube for videos on how to choose a cup, how to insert, how to remove, and everything else you could possibly need to know.

sockatoe · 01/05/2019 13:46

I've had mine a few months and am not totally competent/trusting yet. However, I went off tampons after first child and it's lovely to feel clean and fresh. Also, after originally thinking it was all rather disgusting, I actually find it quite interesting to see how much needs emptying out Hmm. Definitely better than having sanitary towels to dispose of anyway!

Alabasterangel6 · 01/05/2019 13:47

I wish they worked for me. They make me cramp, a lot. I spent money buying too different types to find that out which has called as well!

RavenLG · 01/05/2019 13:55

Love mine. I've been using for a few years now. I went with the site recommendation but wish I had gone for the smaller size (no children but just over 30). It's fine getting in, just getting out is a bit .. tight. But I have a light flow and only change at home once in morning (6am) once after work (6pm) so I can get away with the extra faffing.

Newmum102 · 01/05/2019 14:21

I got one just before Christmas and love it. Can’t believe I didn’t get one sooner. I ordered a brand one off amazon cost about £26, but absolutely worth it

Keepaddingpets · 01/05/2019 16:22

I got terrible cramps as well. Never normally get them but Mooncups crippled me.

Fink · 01/05/2019 16:25

I'm the opposite with cramps. I used to get really bad cramps with tampons but I've never had with Mooncup.

It's a shame you have to shell out for one before finding out if it suits you. But there's obviously no way around that - very much a personal product!

marvellousnightforamooncup · 01/05/2019 16:28

I stopped getting such bad cramps and headaches when I switched to a mooncup. I'll never use tampons again.

Neckercheiftheif · 01/05/2019 16:28

I have a mooncup and lucky got to grips with it straight away!
I had previously considered having a coil put back in because I hated having periods so much, and now thanks to the mooncup I don’t mind at all! still has the novelty factor

CakePigeon4 · 01/05/2019 16:49

Thanks all - have done the quiz and it recommends a Lunette or Saalt - any experience with either of these? Still feeling a bit clueless as to what I’m looking for!

bridgetreilly · 01/05/2019 16:50

I loved my Lunette. Have never tried the Saalt.

goldenchicken · 01/05/2019 16:51

YANBU to try.

I could never make it work.

Kudos to those that do.

DowntonCrabby · 01/05/2019 16:54

I love my mooncup, I’ve been using it since 2010 with minimal fuss.

I also have a cheapy amazon version one I keep as a spare. They work equally as well.

Give one a go OP and give it a good 2-3 periods to see how you get on. It does take a bit of getting used to.

bassackwards · 01/05/2019 16:57

Does anyone have experience of using a cup with a degree of pelvic organ prolapse? Will it stay it??

LanieM87 · 01/05/2019 16:58

I’ve just recently switched to a Mooncup, I’ve been fairly lucky in that my body seems to have taken well to it and getting in/out is nowhere near as bad as you think it will be! I change mine approx 3x a day on my two heavy days, but on light days I can leave it in longer.
Definitely give it a try 😊

FromageFrais · 01/05/2019 16:59

I use duchess cup from Amazon.
Love love love it. Never going back to tampons again.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/05/2019 17:00

I love my mooncup, had it 10 years.

RangerLady · 01/05/2019 17:01

I have a lunette, it's great. Took the quiz after I'd bought it (out of interest, I hadn't known about the quiz before I purchased) and it did say lunette. Give it a go!
