To think I shouldn't be THIS heavy??

Lotsofsausage · 01/05/2019 08:22

So to start, I know I am no supermodel. Fairly tall at 5'8, size 14, smaller waist, medium bust. Fairly curvy arse/ thighs but toned. I am fit and strong and exercise 4-5x per week, including strength training.

Now I know measurements and photos are a better gauge than the scales, and muscle is meant to weigh more than fat (but I thought that was bullshit).....I am 14.5 stone! I have a friend with the same body measurements as me and same height and she is TWO STONE lighter.
Can some people just be 'heavy'???

@ParadiseinDisguise So you don't eat carbs at all? What about lower GI carbs?

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 01/05/2019 16:55

you must not be insulin resistant if carbs don’t affect you

Isn't insulin resistance (in most cases) more the other way round ie
eating too many carbs can cause insulin resistance.

Reducing carbs can reduce or reverse insulin resistance, so you would then be able to have the odd biscuit.

Being insulin resistant isn't an addictive condition like alcoholism.

Goldenbear · 01/05/2019 17:17

I am 5ft 6 and currently about 11.11 stone. When I get to about 9.5 which was prekids, everyone and I mean everyone thought I was starving myself and looked too thin. It's odd as I have just measured my wrists on the back of this thread and they're considered 'small'. I have broad shoulders though so I think it makes me look thinner quicker. Do you have broad shoulders?

ParadiseInDisguise · 01/05/2019 17:27

Time to change, I try and avoid easily digestible carbs l if possible, I.e refined flour, refined sugar, rice, potatoes. I have slow-release carbs when I want them, I.e dried fruit, sweet vegetables like carrots or swede, fruit. Essentially if natural sugar comes packaged in a lot of fibre, it mitigates a lot of the effects.

For the first time in years I broke away from the all-consuming hunger. I can now actually stop mid meal and say I have had sufficient. I was unable to do that as long as I can remember. The off switch just wasn’t working. I couldn’t understand how people could not finish their dinner, or have a a bite of two of their dessert and just leave the rest on the plate. I could never say I was full even when I felt sick with all the eating.

It does feel very similar to addiction as in you feel powerless against it, you want to stop, but you can’t. You dream about cakes like an alcoholic dreams about having a drink.

Do you honestly think people choose to have type 2 diabetes and have their limbs off? This is very a powerful drive and resisting it is not that easy. Hence the comparison with addiction.

And by the way, the research has now proven that sugar is absolutely addictive, in fact more addictive than cocaine. Sugar’s metabolism in the body is identical to that of alcohol, as detailed by Dr Robert Lustig (easy to google diagram).

Completely blows your mind.

lookingelsewhere · 01/05/2019 17:29

I'd always considered dried fruit to be very high GI - in fact, it's very concentrated sugar compared to eating the whole fruit? I enjoy it myself sometimes but it tastes extremely sweet and sugary to me.

lookingelsewhere · 01/05/2019 17:37

Speaking for myself, I always thought I had no willpower. I used to be 6 stones heavier than I am now. What amazed me was that I had a lot more willpower than I realised.

I developed atrial fibrillation (one of my conditions) and overnight I cut out coffee, chocolate and colas - anything with caffeine and didn't miss it at all and yet caffeine is supposed to be so addictive.

I used to be a member of the Clean Plate Club but when I developed acid reflux and a lung condition that meant a full stomach made me breathless and having acid attacks when I when to bed, I started putting less on the plate and even not finishing it all.

I think I just needed that big incentive. I even amazed myself. I still have a tendency to "up the ante" with regards food and goodies. I listen to hypnosis stuff a lot to help me and read a lot of eating behavioural stuff.

ParadiseInDisguise · 01/05/2019 17:39

Isn't insulin resistance (in most cases) more the other way round ie eating too many carbs can cause insulin resistance.

It absolutely is a vicious circle. There is genetic predisposition, but you can also develop it due to a s diet.

ParadiseInDisguise · 01/05/2019 17:45

Yes it is high GI because GI is worked out by weight, I.e glycemic load per 100g. How much dried fruit will you be able to eat though, a handful? You need to chew it quite a bit to extract any sugar. It’s not like shovelling Ben’n’Jerries in.

So while looking at GI also look at the amount normally consumed and fibre content.

ParadiseInDisguise · 01/05/2019 17:47

Sorry dried fruit is high GI.

ParadiseInDisguise · 01/05/2019 17:58

behaviour is important absolutely, but when you are faced with ravenous hunger it is hard to rationalise away. I’d rather not experience it in the first place, thus there would be no need to practice will power.

As I said, I put on 7kg in the last year while my rolls of fat and stomach size diminished visibly. So I either grew bone or muscle. I don’t mind muscle or bone weight, it’s not that I am a horse jockey. My body looks leaner and fitter, so I am happy with the progress to date. And it hasn’t been HARD.

Allexceptme · 01/05/2019 18:36

RottnestFerry

In the nicest possible way I would suggest that you have a word with your wife about her deadlift form, that was painful to watch. I know a number of people who've done themselves serious injuries by lifting heavy weights with poor form.

Fluffymullet · 01/05/2019 18:58

I'm 5 ft 8. My weight has varied between 10 stone to 13stone. I think my natural weight falls at 11stone and size 14.

10- 10.5 stone is unsustainable eating not enough and my body looks wrong - rib cage looks huge and out of proportion.
10.7 stone - ideal weight!

At around 13stone now and a large size 16(post babies) I feel well overweight and am desperate to shed the baby fat. I look fat with rolls around the middle.

You know your own body OP, how clothes fit is a good indicator and you sound fit.

It's amazing how rude some people are on here!!

Aria999 · 01/05/2019 19:03

@HoneysuckIejasmine

How is that different from muscle weighing more than fat? If a small amount of substance X weighs the same as a larger amount of substance Y then substance X is heavier, right?

Stormei · 01/05/2019 19:05

I’m around 11st and 5’9 and I genuinely look big, I wear a. 12 or 14 but often a 14 is tight. I have rolls, a belly and bulky upper arms. Tbf I at least have slim legs.

I’m in envy of heavy people who carry it well. I don’t hit skinny until I’m under 9st

Butteredghost · 01/05/2019 19:13

Clothes sizes aren't really the best guide. I lost 25 kg and still wear a lot of same clothes. I wear smaller jeans but underwear, shirts, and dresses mostly still fit the fine.

TippingHenry · 01/05/2019 19:17

I'm 5ft6 and size 14 and about 13st atm. But I can never get to beyond 11.5st even when at my skinniest. I'm always mortified when friends say they're like 9st and how terrible it is to be 10st or above!

Are you me, Snipples?

I am also amazed when women friends say they are 9, even 10 stone.

I am, however, a size 16 (and starting to squeeeeeze into that too).

But I do have a large frame wide shoulders, wrist bones etc, so may be something to do with it.

Silvanna · 01/05/2019 19:31

People can have the same height and wear same size clothes and weigh differently because of how fat and muscle are distributed in their bodies. I have more fat around my waist and thighs , which makes me a size 12-14. However I have very skinny arms and legs. Others may weigh more than me despite wearing same size of clothes if their bodies are more proportional than mine.

RottnestFerry · 01/05/2019 19:31

Allexceptme

Thanks. There wouldn't be a lot of point in me having a word. I know nothing about it. That clip was taken by her trainer at the gym. I know she was having problems with it and has since moved to the hex bar (?) to lift more. Apparently, the belt she was wearing wasn't really small enough either.

RiversDisguise · 01/05/2019 19:33

@Kennehora is correct, though. Don't like the facts she posted? Ok, but they don't change. No need for snide remarks towards her.

One of the worst things is that people around you keep telling you you're fine, not fat etc etc when you are obese. It's all too easy to fool yourself that you are healthy, esp. when the general population are overweight. The denial can be strong but medical realities don't change. Is your doctor as delighted as you are, OP?

There is a lot of "fat logic" on this thread.

5k in 20mins is a good time for a female club runner. Never personally witnessed someone obese do anything near it.

Inferiorbeing · 01/05/2019 19:34

I feel you, I'm a size 10/12 and 5 foot 11 but weigh nearly the same as you! I don't think I carry it badly (I obviously have large thighs though) so I try to monitor myself by my clothing/measurements instead of weight

tor8181 · 01/05/2019 19:36

i always said bmi should go by how your body looks, ive been told i dont "look"as much as i weigh

i find it a nightmare to find clothes to fit me as im so diffrent on each body part

im 38 17st 4 and 5ft 10,but have a 35 inch leg

that would put my bmi as obese but i have big massive feet for a female (size mens 12,i can fit a small 13) ive a wide frame, big shoulders and big hands(need mens gloves)

im a 22 bottom, but a 28 top as i am a 44 J/K(depends on the bra)

all my weight is boobs and belly(PCOS fat) as i dont have big legs or a big bum or bingo wings and i only have the 1 chin

MumOfOne92 · 01/05/2019 19:39

I'm 5ft2 and 12st6. I'm a 14, quite often 16 top depending on the style, I do have GG boobies though. I've always been busty and I believe this contributes quite significantly to my weight, they are bloody heavy!

ButtonBoo · 01/05/2019 19:40

Haven't read the full thread but this is SO me! Whe. I was a size 8-10, I weighed 10 1/2 stone. I'm a more curvy size 14 now and weigh 14 1/2 stone. My friend is a size 14/16 and weighs 10 1/2 stone. We've both tested each others scales (so I know she's not fibbing) and definitely right. WTF??!! Confused

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 01/05/2019 19:42

river is right. Sub 20 5K is not something I've seen from a larger woman, and I've raced a lot of 5Ks.

You must train very hard for that speed which just isn't consistent with carrying 3 stone more weight than the upper end of your BMI range.

Fazackerley · 01/05/2019 19:52

I wonder how old you are. The only regular sub 20s I know are young and very slim!
